SpaceX's Falcon Heavy Boosters Make Successful Landing

The SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket made its debut on February 6 after seven years of development. Florida resident James Donnelly captured the historic landing from Cape Canaveral. This video shows the two boosters descending back towards the Kennedy Space Centre, creating loud blasts as they successfully land. The Falcon Heavy is the most powerful rocket in production and is based on the design of the Falcon 9 rocket used regularly by SpaceX to launch resupply missions to the International Space Station. • That's genuine Buck Rogers shit.

  • So fucking cool.

It sucks that the middle booster missed it's mark though.

    • @medainbramaged It didn't miss, as such, it ran out of the propellant that was supposed to re-light the main engines. the main engines themselves were fine. Basically, they ran out of matches.

Thanks! I was wondering what happened.

    • @medainbramaged If I remember correctly, it hit the water at 300mph, missed the drone ship by 100ft. and still managed to take out 2 of its (the drone ship's) engines (Close, but no cigar!) ;) Also, Elon said that even though the centre core was heavily modified for the Falcon Heavy rocket, this particular stage was never planned to be re-used, it was kind of like a prototype/demonstrator model, so the fact that it was destroyed isn't really important, invaluable data was still gained. A bit o More..

    • @Mooky2010 im pretty sure he said all 3 cores was v3 and v4 so they are not reusing any of the stages from this test anyway but still obviously would had been 100% if they could had landed the 3rd stage anyway. Also has the footage around the drone ship been released yet? Thats going to be some awesome footage seeing that 3rd stage hit the water at 300mph lol

    • @no undies mcgee You're correct, none of the stages were going to be re-used, and yes, it would have been cool if the core stage landed, but hey-ho. I'm not aware of any footage of the cenre core hitting the water, but if they have some good footage of it, I'm pretty sure they'll release it soon. Elon likes his blooper reels, and so far, they've been very open and honest about any cock ups.

  • ...and didn't NASA's best engineering minds say for decades that it was "scientifically impossible" to land a rocket like this? You gotta hand it to Elon Musk and Space X for daring to think things through differently.

    • @Fonsini They've achieved lots of stuff. What are you talking about? They've landed people on the Moon. They've landed probes on a comet and on an asteroid. They've sent probes around the Sun, to Jupiter, to Pluto, they've sent remote control robots to Mars, they've built a space station in space, they built a space telescope, and they're building another one that's going to be even better, and countless other missions and advances in technology.
      Achieves nothing?

    • @haiyaaa I see both of your points. I agree with Fonsini, in that the shuttle program was a waste of money, but more importantly, time. NASA wasted 50 years of time while employing the best and brightest minds available. Apollo 13 scared Nixon, and that was the end of manned space exploration. They wasted money by re-inventing the already proven Saturn V design, and continued in reverse. The probes, telescopes, etc., YES. The space station laboratory flights? NO. The only way a space station ma More..

    • @Fonsini snika huh? you do know they put a rover on mars completely autonomous. Meaning from the time it reaches outter earth orbit there is no way to send it commands from the earth its all done by cpu in the rover so it was able to find its way to mars deploy and land safely and now its rolling around taking pics and shit! The fug you talking about?! Also lets not even talk about the james web telescope thats going to be Hubble times a million so god knows what we will see when that deploy More..

    • @1redback Russia is at least on par with the US in space technologies. No other country is. Other than having boosters that return to a landing pad, which sure looks cool!
The Russians and the USA are the only two countries who have always been good at space since the late 50's and the 60's.

    • @1redback You are one fucking retard. Russia built a space station 50 years ago and put a man into space 70 years ago. This shit is nothing special. It's a good step forward and evolution and it's private money involved. There's nothing that makes you and your country better than any shithole. But when the money is spent you get a result.

  • Incredible cool... like out from a SF-movie... how they come down, landing (!) like they would in a movie... oh, wait, it is a movie... a reality-movie! I'm looking forward to all the adventures mankind will have the next 20-30 years... then I'm gone and won't see any more. But it makes me proud to see, that there are visionary humans, putting their effort and money in cool projects rather than building more weapons or being corrupt to the bone.

Two thumbs up for Musk and his cool ideas...
