Paralyzed woman uses thought-controlled robotic arm to drink coffee

The Force is strong at Braingate. The woman and a 66 year-old man, identified only as S3 and T2, respectively. Both of them had lost the use of their limbs years ago, due to brainstem strokes. They manipulated two different robotic arms, designed by the DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, and DEKA Research and Development Corp.

When the participants thought of their arm performing a certain action, neurons adjacent to the array fired accordingly. Due to the subjects’ paralysis, this did not result in the movement of their arm, which it would do in a non-handicapped person. The electrical activity of the neurons was, however, picked up by the electrodes. This data was fed (via the cable) to a linked external computer, which translated the activity into instructions for the robotic arm.

Over the course of four days, the woman and man used this setup in a series of exercises. So

  • Through our faith in Science we shall overcome any obstacle. We shall not thirst, we shall not go hungry, we shall no longer want, because we, through science, will HAVE!

    • @LickMyDuck
Satan has made every religion to control and enslave man.
God saw this and came to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. In the fullness of time he sent his son Jesus, who was, is and is to come. He frees his people and brings them eternal life.
It is a sad thing that you people are so blinded by the thousands of false religions so that you cannot see the light of the gospel of Jesus.

    • @FlREF0X So, all the other religions are controlled by satan... but you just happen to be following the only correct religion? What are the chances of that! You do realise the majority of all other religions think exactly the same way?

    • @Despott There can be only 1.
All the others are of oppression and slavery, but in the Name of Jesus all oppression shall cease.

    • @Mr Ebk - They can cut off her useless arms and legs and build a robot body. Then they can add sensors to feel what she touches. They could put the battery pack inside her torso. Bet it would cost millions, and thats without the warranty.

    • @Mr Ebk
DMV, department of motor vehicles. I terrible place full of fat black government employees acting rude. If they notice you have been waiting hours in the summer heat and you are finally next in line they will take a break on purpose and you have to wait until they get back. If hell were a place on earth it would be the DMV in southern California. Illegal Mexicans by the hundreds coughing their tuberculosis germs all over the place and each one has 5 babies. No shit, im serious. Oh the More..

    • @FoodPig Tesla came up with the principles of robotics. If he hadn't then there would be nothing of this.

    • @FoodPig I should mention that while Tesla was not the first to build mechanical objects capable of doing stuff like serving tea. He was the first to have built something that required intelligence to do something. All logic gates that software engineers use came from Tesla. Its why I said thank you Tesla, for being the first to build an intelligent robot and laying the groundwork for today's robots.

  • I can't say how I'd react to being in this state. It would not be a good place to be and I wouldn't want to have to be a part of perfecting machinery. I'd just be burning my crotch with hot coffee.

  • One day this technology will be used to transplant the human brain into complete autonomous cyborgs, with fully integrated motor control of all robotic functions to enable a true walking, climbing, swimming, even soldier or war cyborgs..with reverse input so that the mind can sense or feel what its holding or doing for a fully immersive experience...
And one day there will be a remotely operated thought controlled doppelgänger one like in the Film 'Surrogates' with Bruce Willis....after all our More..
