BRITISH ISLES basks under virtually cloudless skies in this amazingly clear Nasa satellite snap.

It was taken at lunchtime 27/03/2012 — the sixth day of record-breaking temperatures.

The picture shows just a faintest wisp of cloud along the Norfolk coast.

Also visible is a column of smoke rising from South Wales — one of 291 reports of grass fires this week.

Around 70 firefighters tackled an overnight blaze at Kirbean near Dumfries, Scotland, which could be seen 30 miles away.

East Yorkshire joined 14 other counties — home to a total of 22 million people — in being declared officially in drought. Parts have seen the driest 12 months since 1910 with river levels continuing to fall, the Environment Agency said.

A spokeswoman warned: "This won't be the last area to go into drought, it is simply the latest."

Top temperature yesterday was 23.6°C (74.4°F) at Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. Today could see similar figures in England. It will cool over the weekend but there
