Armed Robbers Shot

A man shot while allegedly attempting to burglarize a north side sports apparel store has been charged with the crime, according to a criminal complaint.

Deishun L. Byrd-McWay, 20, was charged with another felony count of criminal damage to property in connection with the break-in in the early hours of July 3 at Bouchard's, 2400 N. Martin Luther King Drive, according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, about 4 a.m. the store's owner, who was watching the business because of previous robberies and thefts, noticed several men across the street from the store with guns.

The owner then retrieved a YHM assault-style rifle and watched as a stolen van backed into the front of the store, partially popping open a steel gate and causing an estimated $12,000 damage to the building's exterior.

As three men attempted to crawl into the store, the owner opened fire from inside. The men fled and were picked up by a man in another vehicle.

Byrd-McWay eventually showed up at a hospital with three gunshot wounds, according to the complaint.

He remained in custody in the Milwaukee County Jail on Thursday with his bail set at $10,000, according to jail and court records.

If convicted of both counts, Byrd-McWay could be sentenced to up to 151/2 years in prison, according to the complaint.
