Boy dies after hit and run, car flips and lands on top of him.

An 8-year-old boy has died after being seriously injured in a hit and run in southeastern B.C. Thursday.

Dawson Kormilo of Jaffray, B.C., died in hospital Saturday afternoon.

Police say the boy was riding his bike on Jaffray Baynes Lake Road Thursday when a car came speeding around a corner, lost control and hit him.

The impact sent the boy flying into a ditch, where the car flipped over and landed on top of him.

At the time, witnesses said they couldn't believe the driver's reaction.

"The driver came outta the car eating an apple," said one woman. "He was worried. 'Look at my car,' he said to my husband when he showed up."

Volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene, lifting the car off the boy.

"So, four guys give it everything they had to lift that car off and flip it over, so, yeah, definitely some heroics there," said one man who witnessed the operation.

The boy was flown to B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver, where he died Saturday afternoon.

Robin Roo, 54, has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

He is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Cranbrook in November.

Police say further charges could be laid.

"I don't know. It's hard to say this was an accident," said RCMP Cpl. Chris Faulkner. "The driver shouldn't have been on the road, and he was."

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't already spoken to police to call the Cranbrook RCMP detachment at 250-489-3471.

Jaffray is about 550 kilometres east of Vancouver.
