As the United States and Russia become closer than ever to agree on military cooperation and coordination in striking ISIS and Nusra, the US seems to agree more and more with the Russian view on terror groups in Syria.

Last month, Kerry said the most important thing the administration is doing to ramp up the effort to defeat extremists in Syria is to “reach an understanding” with the Russian side about how to deal with the terrorists, which he named as the Islamic State, and Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria.

Kerry and President Obama have proposed to Moscow increased cooperation against those groups, especially Jabhat al-Nusra, in exchange for Russia convincing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to abide by the crumbling cease-fire and lay off bombing “moderate rebels”.

Surprisingly, Kerry then said, “There are a couple of subgroups underneath the two designated — Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra — Jaysh al-Islam, Ahrar al-Sham particularly — who brush off and fight with that — alongside these other two sometimes to fight the Assad regime.”

This significant statement proves that the US State Department does have knowledge about the cooperation between Al-Qaeda and some of the US-backed islamist groups. The was against terrorism in Syria will tenfold effective if the US and Russian governments agree on cooperation and coordination against an agreed upon terror list.
