Tucson Sector - Border Patrol Agents Seize 3,500 lbs. of Pot

TUCSON - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo Station seized more than 3,500 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $2.7 million in the west desert in two separate incidents.

Saturday, agents were tracking foot signs of a group of suspected illegal immigrants about 20 miles west of Lukeville, when they discovered 84 bundles of marijuana weighing more than 1,730 pounds and an estimated value of $1.3 million.

After securing the area, the agents continued the search for backpackers but were unable to locate the individuals.

Monday morning agents were patrolling south of State Route 86 when they encountered fresh tire tracks in the desert.

The agents followed the tracks and encountered a sport utility vehicle.

Upon closer inspection agents discovered 100 bundles of marijuana inside the vehicle weighing more than 1,780 pounds with an estimated street value of $1.4 million.

No suspects were located.
