Executives at the taxpayer-funded BBC are holding talks over the new set, which will cost a staggering £15 million.

A spot for the Islamic place of worship has been approved on a street leading to Albert Square, according to the Sun.

The religious building has reportedly been described as a “prominent place of worship” for the soap’s Muslim characters – including Masood and Tamwar Ahmed.

The move will trigger questions from some fans because there is currently no church on set, leaving born-again Christian Dot Cotton to hold religious meetings in Walford Community Centre.

An insider said: “The new set will be as authentic as East London today, so will including a mosque."

The Islamic call to prayer will be heard on the show, according to reports.

The BBC said: “The new set will better reflect the East End on screen as well as increase the potential for storylines.”

The Masoods — dad Ahmed, daughter Shabnam and son Tamwar — are the only Muslim family in the programme.

An insider also said a future-plot meeting about the notion a lead character could be radicalised by Muslim fanatics was “on the horizon”.

They added: “It’s been considered and discussed.

“The soap wants to be up to date and timely. It is a realistic storyline for an East London community.”

But an EastEnders spokeswoman said: “There are no current plans for a radicalisation storyline.”
