Police rescue baby from car after chase

Dayton police officers rushed to save a baby from a smoking vehicle at the intersection of Philadelphia Drive and Otterbein Avenue after the driver of that vehicle crashed as police were chasing him last month.

The incident happened May 16 around 11:45 a.m. and police Monday released cruiser camera footage of the rescue and crash following a News Center 7 public records request.

Da’Shawn Pitts, 26, was arrested on charges of endangering children and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, according to the arrest report. He remained in jail on Monday on other charges stemming from a separate incident this year.

“Let me get my son,” Pitts says in the video as police are working to save the baby from the car.

Dayton police crews were in the Shaftesbury Road area working to curb gun crime issues in the area when they observed a suspicious red car, Lt. Steven Bauer said.

When officers attempted a traffic stop, the car reportedly fled.

The crash caused the red car to roll onto its top, with Pitts, a woman and 10-month-old child inside, said Bauer.

“He put the child and the public in danger with his reckless actions,” said Bauer. “This is all needless and could’ve been easily prevented.”

The woman in the car was detained, but it was unclear if she is facing any charges.
