An airplane was set on fire on by drug cartel members after it was forced to land on a motorway, foreign media reports.

The Hawker XB-RCM light aircraft made an emergency landing on the Carrillo-Mérida road in Quintana Roo, Mexico around 6am this morning.

It was intercepted by the Mexican Air Force and forced to land, Municipios Puebla reports.

Two military planes and a drone continue to guard the area.

Car and truck drivers looked on in disbelief as the burning aircraft quickly became engulfed in flames – with traffic backing away as the fire raged.

Photos later showed officials attending the scene to set up a cordon.

Armed officers flanked the burning aircraft and set cones around the area to strop traffic.
