Surveillance video shows shooter charge car with assault rifle

Daytona Beach police said Ronald Denson opened fire on a car in the parking lot of Bethune Village Market on Aug. 8.

Sometime around 12:45 p.m., the shooter walked out of the Bethune Village Market, 835 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., and was handed a fully automatic rifle by a female who was sitting inside a car, according to police. After grabbing the rifle, he fired several rounds toward the victim, who was parked about 10 feet away from him, Daytona Beach police Chief Craig Capri said.

Capri said the shooter and victim know each other and it’s likely the victim will survive and is cooperating.

“It appears they were set up to meet each other,” Capri said. “As the victim was waiting in his vehicle on the east side of the building, the suspect came out of the store. ... He was handed some type of assault rifle. He proceeded to take that assault rifle and fired on the victim’s vehicle.”

The victim sped away heading west on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and drove about a mile before a friend of his took him to the hospital, Capri said.

The victim was shot through the arm and the bullet lodged in his stomach, but missed vital organs, according to police. Capri said he was expected to undergo surgery.
