Jail For Man Who Stabbed City Cyclist

A Londoner who admitted wielding a knife and slashing at a cyclist in broad daylight has been jailed for four years. Cecil Samba, 22, appeared at Leicester Crown Court today (Friday 28 September) where he was sentenced to four years imprisonment for attempt Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent.

He also received six months imprisonment for possession of a bladed article. The sentences are to run concurrently. Samba, of Conisborough Crescent in Lewisham, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing in June to Section 18 attempted wounding with intent and threatening a person with a blade/pointed article in a public place. At around 3.30pm on 22 March this year, Samba was captured on CCTV approaching a cyclist in Braunstone Gate. He was holding a knife and could be seen lashing out at the cyclist, who tried to defend himself by throwing his bicycle at Samba.

A PCSO who was in the area radioed for assistance but the victim left the scene before emergency services arrived minutes later. PC Suhaib Khalid was the investigating officer, he said: “This is yet another example of the damage that can be done when a decision is made to carry a knife. Samba is a young man who now faces many years in prison because of his actions that day. “Samba carried out an unprovoked attack on a man in a busy city street, and despite extensive enquiries to locate the victim, he remains unidentified. “I hope that today’s outcome serves as a warning to anyone intent on carrying a knife and using it against another person that we will carry out a full and thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice. Tackling knife crime remains a priority for Leicestershire Police and the force is committed to working with partners to combat knife crime in our area. In 2016 we launched the campaign #LivesNotKnives, an initiative to drive home the message of the devastating consequences knife crime can have and what could happen if you are caught carrying a weapon.
