Security video shows carryout clerk fend off armed robber

Police are searching for a would-be armed robber who tried to steal cash from a carryout before the store’s clerk fought off the criminal.

The attempted robbery, captured on store surveillance video, occurred at 10:55 p.m. Sunday at Wally’s Carryout, 551 E. Broadway St. in East Toledo.

A police report states a man entered the store and did not have enough change to purchase a cigarette. He then pointed a handgun at the clerk, 60-year-old Adnan Aldweik, and reached toward the cash register.

When the suspect began climbing over the counter, Mr. Aldweik pulled him the rest of the way over and managed to get the gun’s magazine to eject onto the floor, the report states. The scuffle continued briefly before the clerk ran out. The suspect attempted to get into the register — which had toppled to the floor — but gave up and grabbed a pack of cigarettes and fled on foot.

Mr. Aldweik was struck in the face, and the suspect fell on his leg in the fight. He declined medical attention, police said.

The suspect is described as male, 30 to 34 years old, about 6 feet tall and 240 pounds, and with a short haircut and no facial hair. He was wearing jeans, a gray jacket, and possibly a shirt and gray shoes. A stocking cap also possibly worn by the suspect was found on the floor.
