Dad and son have lucky escape after UK police pursuit ends in head-on collision

A dad and his one-year-old baby had a lucky escape after they were caught in the midst of a police chase that ended in a banned driver having a head-on collision with a police car on September 15 in Grantham, England.

Dashcam footage shows the moment that 19-year-old Patrick Hoyland, who was driving a Honda HR-V with false number plates smashed head-on into a police car.

Filmer Aurimas Meiliūnas was driving to the shops on Springfield Road with his 1-year-old child when the vehicle attempted to drive through a red light but was stopped in its tracks, colliding with the police car and writing off Meiliūnas' Volvo.

The collision not only wrote off the car but deployed the airbag, trapping Meiliūnas in the driver's seat, while he and his child screamed.

Hoyland and the other passengers escaped the wreckage and climbed over Meiliūnas' bonnet where the police initiated a pursuit and were later arrested.

Hoyland admitted charges of dangerous driving, having no insurance and driving while disqualified.

Additionally, he admitted to making off without payment for petrol, driving without due care and attention, according to local reports.

The 19-year-old was sentenced to 11 months in prison at Lincoln Crown Court on November 5, with an additional driving ban for two years and five months.

Recorder Graham Huston told Hoyland: “It’s a miracle that no-one was seriously injured let alone killed.

"You deliberately put the lives of other road users, including police officers, at risk. There is no excuse."

Meiliūnas told Newsflare: "I was absolutely in shock, trapped in the vehicle, not really understanding what was just happened.

"First thing, I turned to have a look that everything was okay with my son.

"He was just scared, [it was] good that he was on the opposite side of impact.

"I’m glad the driver was arrested and get what he deserved."
