Police release surveillance video from Dayton mass shooting

Dayton, Ohio police have released surveillance video that captures footage from the mass shooting that killed nine people and wounded several others.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl released the surveillance video at a press conference Sunday afternoon.

In the video, captured by a nearby business in Dayton’s Oregon District, you can see officers running toward the gunfire to locate the suspect. You can also see people running away from the scene of the shooting. Toward the end of the surveillance video, you can see police fatally shoot the alleged gunman, Connor Betts, 24.

According to Biehl, officers engaged the suspect within 20 seconds of hearing shots fired. Thirty seconds after the the gunman began shooting, he was shot and killed by first responders, Biehl said.

Biehl said that stopping Betts before he could get inside the bar was essential. Loss of life could have been "catastrophic," according to Biehl.

Five officers and a sergeant were placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol, according to Biehl.

"I'm amazed at the quick response of Dayton police that literally saved hundreds of lives," said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley.
