36 shots fired as body cam video shows moments leading up to officer-involved shooting

Shooting at 11:00 ..... Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacione released body cam video from last week's officer-involved shooting at a news conference Friday morning.

Guadalupe Espinoza was shot by police outside a Safeway at around 10:45 pm on February 1. Investigators say Espinoza displayed a fake gun at officers before they opened fire, hitting him as many as three times.

No officers were injured. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol. All seven of the officers were wearing body cameras.

The video released Friday is from Officer Mario Reyes' camera. You can hear him and other officers giving instructions to Espinoza in Spanish.

The investigation revealed Espinoza was brandishing a CO2 air gun and he had a blood alcohol level of .14, nearly twice the legal limit. Police fired 36 times, four of those shots were rubber bullets. Espinoza was hit three times.

District Attorney Pacione said the investigation is ongoing. She gave no indication when the investigation might be wrapped up.

Espinoza was wheeled into a Salinas courtroom Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to brandishing a fake gun, shoplifiting and drug possession.
