Body camera video of fatal Luc Siel shooting

An officer clearly ordered a 54-year-old man to drop a knife he was using to stab and slash his son before firing and killing him, video of the incident released by police early Wednesday shows.

Luc Ciel, of Richmond, died at the hospital after officers shot him April 11 during the home invasion in the 900 block of Wilson Avenue. Video from two police body cameras captured the shooting, as well as the incident leading up to it and the rescue of a child by police.

Police released the video on social media just after midnight as part of its community briefing campaign that began last month when they released video of an officer-involved shooting on Feb. 27.

Video released Wednesday also included the original 911 call, during which loud screaming can be heard in the background. It also shows the 8-inch hunting knife and the 6-inch paring knife that police said Ciel used.

This newspaper is including the video but edited certain parts of it to exclude the most graphic images.

The chaos erupted around 2:35 a.m. when police responded to reports of a home invasion. Police received information at the scene that Ciel was holding his family at knife point and making threats to commit suicide, and police spokesman Lt. Matt Stonebraker said that Ciel held a knife to his throat and to those of some family members.
