Under the lights at Chamberlain Park, students at Broughton High were playing a game of basketball at about 7 p.m.

“A lot of kids from this area play there,” said Bryant O’Neal.

Another group of four men in their late teens or 20s were also by the courts and Matthew Dillon said his friends asked if the group wanted to play. All of them said no, except for one.

“His friends came over, like from behind the trees, and the guy pulled the gun and he stood in front of the bench and he told his friends to start going through our stuff, they picked up everything,” said O’Neal.

Raleigh police said that the student’s belongings were on a bench at the basketball court. Authorities said one of the men pulled out a gun when the group of friends confronted him.

“He just kind of waved the gun around,” said James Eaker.

They said the suspects took car keys and cell phones and demanded the passcodes to unlock the phones. They then jumped into O’Neal’s 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe.

“They went into his car and stole his car,” said Dillon.

“Right before he left, he shot the gun, over and away from us,” said Eaker.

The SUV was recovered at about 12:40 a.m. Monday at the Jaycee Community Center on Wade Avenue.

Authorities said that one of the four suspects was described as a black man who is about 6 feet tall and was wearing a gray jacket and tan khakis. Another was described as a black man wearing a dark, parka-type jacket and tan khakis.
