Police helicopter gives chase as carjacking suspect flees

A suspect wanted for a violent carjacking in Oshawa led police on a lengthy chase before being apprehended an hour later in rural Clarington Thursday night.

Durham police have released video taken from the Air 1 police helicopter depicting the suspect’s extended flight. The man was arrested as a police canine team closed in while he flailed through heavy brush in his attempt to get away.

The drama began at around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 28 in a parking lot in the area of Taunton and Harmony Roads when a woman was assaulted and had her vehicle stolen, police said. Officers determined the SUV was being driven east towards Clarington.

Air 1 picked up the pursuit, spotting the SUV at a gas station on Hwy. 115 in Newcastle. Officers on the ground began a pursuit at Concession 4, but suspended the chase due to safety concerns when the suspect vehicle sped away.

The Air 1 crew was following as the SUV went out of control on a turn and flipped over. The suspect got out and took off on foot, eventually making his way to a nearby residence where he was monitored by the chopper crew as cops, including the canine team, closed in.

A suspect was taken into custody after trying to flee through dense brush.

Kyle Grieder, 33, of Cornish Hall Road in Cobourg, faces charges including robbery, flight from police and dangerous driving, as well as breach of recognizance, driving while under suspension and six counts of driving while prohibited.

In April of 2016 Cobourg police charged a man named Kyle Grieder, then 30, with charges including driving while under suspension and driving while disqualified after stopping a motorist for speeding on Ontario Street.
