Drunk moped driver hits patrol car and leaves passenger on the street during police chase

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has released video which they say shows an intoxicated moped driver leaving his passenger on the street as the driver attempts to flee from deputies.

It happened last month when investigators say 43-year-old Leander Bland Holmes was attempting to get away from deputies in Goose Creek.

A report states Holmes was on Red Bank Road when the passenger began struggling with Holmes in an attempt to get him to pull over.

Video shows that during the chase, the moped is seen striking the rear of one of the deputy’s patrol cars.

“Once Holmes left his passenger, he continued to drive down Garwood Road towards Sedgefield Intermediate School,” BCSO officials said.

Authorities said the chase ended after Holmes attempted to drive down a driveway and got to a wooded area where he crashed and ran from deputies.

“K-9 deputies began to pursue Holmes through the woods and after a short foot pursuit, he was detained,” BCSO officials said.

A report states Holmes told deputies he swallowed an unknown amount of crack cocaine.
