Russia Threatens Denmark With Nuclear Attack

Tough talk from Russia as it threatens to use nuclear weapons against Denmark. Moscow has warned that if Denmark joins NATO's missile defence shield, the Danish navy will be a fair target for a nuclear attack.

In comments to the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper, Russia's ambassador to Denmark Mikhail Vanin said: "I don't think that Danes fully understand the consequence if Denmark joins the American-led missile defence shield...Denmark would be part of the threat against Russia. It would be less peaceful and relations with Russia will suffer... It is, of course, your own decision - I just want to remind you that your finances and security will suffer."

Denmark's foreign minister immedietly responded to those comments saying, "if that is what he has said, then it is unacceptable. Russia knows full well that Nato's missile defence is defensive and not targeted at (Russia)."

Denmark announced it was joining NATO's defence shield, but eight months ago. The comments from the Russian ambassador, though, come just after Denmark released information about how often it had to scramble its F-16 fighters to intercept encroaching Russian fighter jets: 58 times in 2014 - double what it was in 2012.

It's been a trend right across Europe. NATO jets had to scramble over 400 times last year to intercept approaching Russian military aircraft which prompted NATO's secretary general to make these comments.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: "Challenge is partly the numbers but it's also the way they (Russia) are conducting the flights. They are not filing their air flight plans, they are not turning on the transponders and they are not communicating with the civilian air traffic control. And therefore these flights pose a risk to civilian air traffic. The flights are unjustified and they are posing risk on normal air traffic."

Baltic countries have been especially concerned because of their proximity to Russia and fears of aggression from Moscow will be further raised after Russia's ambassador to Denmark said that the 'Baltic region is now one of the most unpredictable in the world.'
