A least 40,000 protesters took to the streets of Dublin, Saturday, to oppose the introduction of domestic water rates in the country.

Protesters chanted slogans like "Water is a human right," while holding signs reading "You can shove your water meters up your arse" and “From the rivers to the sea, Irish water will be free." All city access routes were blocked by the rally, billed as one of the largest in years.

Domestic water has been paid for by taxes in Ireland but, with the new government measure, water meters will become mandatory. The introduction of the charges was one of the conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund’s bailout to the country in 2010.
