Bodycam footage shows moment police officers assaulted by thug

West Yorkshire Police have released bodycam footage showing the moment two officers were subjected to a shocking assault as they attempted to arrest a man in Leeds.

According to the force, this is just one of 2,500 attacks on police officers across West Yorkshire in the past 12 months.

In the video, PC Sam Price and a colleague attend a report of a man causing disorder in a shop.

The pair are shown talking with the offender and as one attempts to place a pair of handcuffs on the individual, he lashes out.

He can be seen throwing a flurry of punches in their direction, and in the following scuffle the man is ordered to stop biting the officers struggling to subdue him.

As well as being bitten, they were also spat at as they tried to handcuff him - he can be seen digging his teeth into the fingers of one of the police officers.

The offender was jailed for 18 weeks for the assaults on PC Price and the second unnamed officer.

Footage recorded in December 2018 has only just been released by West Yorkshire Police to highlight the dangers their officers face every day.

Chief Constable John Robins said: "I want everybody across West Yorkshire to know that as a chief constable I find it totally unacceptable for officers and staff to be assaulted in the execution of their duty.

"I will continue to do everything I possibly can to get the right sentences, the right outcome and the right prevention techniques in place."
