Officer fires through police car’s window, fatally shooting suspect to end high-speed chase

Video footage made public Thursday shows the final moments of a high-speed chase that ended on a dead end in Bloomingdale, where an officer fired 14 shots – many through his own driver’s side window – killing the driver.

Michael Rivera, 32, of Newark, was driving toward Riverdale Officer Andrew Duffy Jan. 23 when the officer began firing, the video shows. Rivera’s SUV hit the cruiser door, pinning Duffy’s leg as the shots continued to ring out, according to the video, obtained through a records request Thursday.

Rivera died after being taken to Chilton Medical Center, the state Attorney General’s Office said. The office’s Division of Criminal Justice is continuing to investigate the shooting, but Riverdale Police Chief Kevin Smith said he believes Rivera’s reckless actions “forced this incident which resulted in his death.”

Duffy’s dashboard camera video shows him chasing the SUV for just under three minutes, at times telling dispatchers that Rivera’s vehicle was traveling at around 80 mph and dangerously passing other vehicles. Rivera turned off of Hamburg Turnpike and drove past Samuel R. Donald Elementary School into a small, residential neighborhood, the video shows.
