Firefighter in FDNY vehicle to steal flatbed cover from parked truck

Cops have arrested a firefighter they say pulled over his FDNY vehicle in Queens so he could steal a $2,500 flatbed cover from a parked truck in the middle of the night, officials said Thursday.

Aleksandr Swieszek, 40, is accused of pilfering from a pick-up truck he found parked outside Exclusive Collision Repair along a strip of car dealerships and auto shops near Northen Blvd. and 56th St. in Woodside about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said. He was on duty at the time.

Surveillance taken by the auto repair shop shows the driver jumping out of an FDNY SUV, disassembling the cover from the flatbed of the parked black pick-up truck and putting it in the rear of the FDNY vehicle.

The owner of Exclusive Collision Repair said that when he showed up for work Wednesday morning he realized someone had removed the pricey foldable plastic and vinyl cover.

After learning investigators were looking for him, Swieszek, a 13-year veteran of the FDNY who earned $89,000 last year, surrendered to police at the 114th Precinct about 10 hours after the incident, after his shift had ended.
