Skeleton-masked man almost sets himself ablaze in arson attack

A man wearing a skeleton face mask almost toasted himself to a crisp while setting a car on fire outside a Gold Coast home earlier this month.

Police have released security camera footage of the bizarre arson attack in Southport on Saturday, May 9, as the hunt continues to identify and catch the perpetrator.

Gold Coast police are seeking public assistance to help find a man who was captured on CCTV footage deliberately setting fire to a vehicle in Southport.

The man drove a black Holden Barina, which had no registration plates, and parked the vehicle outside a driveway on Cook Close about 10.25pm.

He got out, emptied accelerant inside the car and set it on fire, creating a huge fireball that appeared to envelop him during the first few seconds as the fire took hold.

However, footage showed the man running from the scene moments after the initial explosion.

Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes, contained the flames and extinguished the blaze a short time later. The fire destroyed the vehicle.

Police have appealed for any witnesses, CCTV or dash-cam footage in the Cook Close, Everest Drive and Edmund Rice Drive area close to the time of the incident.
