Trump tells Pentagon "he does not want war"

The US president has reportedly told his acting defense secretary that he does not want to go to war with Iran amid rising tensions between the two countries.

The New York Times, citing several administration officials, reports that Trump told Patrick Shanahan that the so-called maximum pressure campaign against Iran must not escalate into open conflict. Trump's statement is said to have been made during a briefing on Iran in the White House situation room on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the U-S House speaker says the Trump administration does not have the congressional authorization to go to war. Nancy Pelosi also says the top leaders in Congress are to receive a classified briefing on Iran from the administration.
