Battle of Peleliu: Heroes and MacArthur's Vanity

Although the amphibious assault on Tarawa prior to the Battle of Peleliu was bloodier in a more compressed timeframe and area, the 1944 assault to safeguard MacArthur's largely vainglorious retaking of the Philippines was costlier across the board. (Next time you're tempted to consider yourself a badass, perhaps recall that badasses mostly show up, fight hard, hold on, and maybe survive.)
