Post-Mortem photography (Memento Mori)

Post-mortem photography (also known as memorial portraiture or memento mori) is the practice of photographing the recently deceased.

With the advent of photography in the Victorian era a rather unusual practice evolved. Having photos taken was very expensive and most families didn't own a camera. It is well known that mortality rates were high in this era due mostly to diseases and poor hygiene. When a loved one died the Victorians were presented with an opportunity to imortalise their beloved in a way that was previously impossible: they could photograph them. Because of the high cost of photography, post-mortem photographs were, in many cases, the only photograph a family had of the deceased.

The invention of the daguerreotype in 1839 made portraiture much more commonplace, as many of those who were unable to afford the commission of a painted portrait could afford to sit for a photography session. This cheaper and quicker method also provided the middle class with a means for memorializing dead loved ones.

In the earliest forms of post-mortem photography, coffins were seldom seen and the dead would be posed as if they were still alive. Children were posed with toys or asleep in their bed. Even special frames were cleverly used to make the corpse stand upright. For many poor children whose siblings died, they would be required to pose with their brother or sister in a macabre family portrait. Bear in mind that this all had to happen within days of the person's death in order to take the photographs prior to the visible onset of decomposition.

The effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject's eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images (especially tintypes and ambrotypes) have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse.
Later examples show less effort at a lifelike appearance, and often show the subject in a coffin. Some very late examples show the deceased in a coffin with a large group of funeral attendees; this type of photograph was especially popular in Europe and less common in the United States.

Bringing Down America by Larry Grathwohl

For those of us that actually take the time to do our own homework, to investigate the facts, and learn the truth..We already know a lot about of what Mr. Larry Grathwohl is saying in this interview. How the communist, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn and The Weather Underground terrorist group, nurtured, and financed, Barack Hussein Obama along to be the radical un-American that he is today. How they eventually became so called, respected Marxist Professors at prestigious colleges, teaching their Marxist ideology to the Progressive Liberals, dumbing them down, making them hate America,Our forefathers, our constitution and bill of rights, our way of life. As we have taken the time to do our own homework, to investigate the facts, I suggest you take the times to watch and listen to this interview. I did and Mr. Larry Grathwohl spoke of some things I wasn't aware of, and maybe you are not aware of either.

Apologies in advance for the sappy video, but I came across this today and was surprised. This is more of a personal acknowledgement than it is me "redefining the media". It was 45 years ago today that the crew of the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) were lost at sea. My uncle was one of those lost. I was just a kid at the time but I remember it well.

RIP
