Sharpton, president of NAN and host of MSNBC's Politics Nation , has led several rallies demanding the arrest of George Zimmerman, who reportedly shot Martin on Feb. 26. On Mar. 30 in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting occurred, Sharpton pledged that his group would "move to the next level if Zimmerman isn't arrested." At the opening of NAN's 14th annual convention in Washington, D.C., the attorney general first thanked MSNBC's Rev. Sharpton "for your partnership, your friendship, and your tireless efforts to speak out for the voiceless, to stand up for the powerless, and to shine a light on the problems we must solve, and the promises we must fulfill." Concerning Trayvon Martin, Holder said , "I know that many of you are greatly -- and rightly -- concerned about the recent shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a young man whose future has been lost to the ages." "As most of you know, three weeks ago, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into this incident, which remains open at this time, and prevents me from talking in detail about this matter," he said. "Although I cannot share where current efforts will lead us from here, I can assure you that, in this investigation - and in all cases - we will examine the facts and the law," said Holder. "If we find evidence of a potential federal criminal civil rights crime, we will take appropriate action. And, at every step, the facts and the law will guide us forward.The National Action Network, which Sharpton founded, has held multiple rallies about the Martin shooting, largely critical of shooter George Zimmerman, irrespective of an ongoing investigation. Zimmerman, who has not been arrested in the case, said he acted in self-defense after following Martin on Feb. 26, the night Martin was killed. A Florida special prosecutor announced on Monday that the case will not be taken before a Florida grand jury, though the investigation will continue. Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five, was attacked in her home on Skyview Street about 11 a.m. March 21, El Cajon police said. Her 17-year-old daughter, Fatima Alhimidi, called 911 after allegedly finding her critically injured mother, who was pronounced dead in a hospital three days later. Records obtained at El Cajon Superior Court on Wednesday showed the victim planned to leave her husband and also revealed the daughter was distraught over her pending arranged marriage to a cousin, U-T San Diego reported. Alawadi's husband, Kassim Alhimidi, was reported to have been taking the couple's younger children to school when the attack occurred, but an affidavit stated his whereabouts had not yet been confirmed, according to U-T San Diego. Alawadi's death spurred outrage in the Muslim community. Police said the slaying may have been a hate crime -- citing a threatening note found at the scene -- but stressed all other possibilities would be investigated. The sheriff's crime lab determined that the note, which ordered the family to go back to where they came from, was a copy, not the original, U-T San Diego reported. Police said the family allegedly received a similar note prior to the day of the killing but did not report it. This ride went very fast, routinely leaving traffic behind. It seemed like the first cars that were able to keep up (given urban traffic) were a few in Hains Point, followed by some in Rock Creek Parkway when the ride narrowed to one lane to let them by. Rock Creek Parkway was perhaps the high point of the ride. It is a 25 MPH road in most places, 35 in a few, yet bicycle riders rarely use it. No law prohibits riding there, and it cannot be considered a "limited access highway" given the at-grade stoplight at Virginia Ave as well as the low speed limits. The ride entered the parkway using both lanes, but narrowed to one as cars began to build up behind the ride to let them pass. Simply exercising the right to ride there was enough. Throughout the ride, the pace was very fast, possibly the fastest Critical Mass I've ever seen, yet when the ride split it was just one split in the middle, and the trail element never got lost or out of sight of the lead element.
