(JORDAN VALLEY, OR) - On Saturday May 18th, 2013, SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) volunteer Adam Fahnestock was peacefully sitting monitoring the Big Loop Rodeo when rodeo personnel and a Malheur County Sheriff's deputy approached him. After a very brief conversation, the deputy suddenly grabbed Fahnestock and threw him violently to the ground where rodeo personnel then also set upon him. Fahnestock was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He is currently being held in Malheur County Jail, Vale, OR on a $1,000 bail. Big Loop Rodeo has been under fire from SHARK recently after documentation of a bucking horse breaking its leg in the arena and numerous horses were filmed crashing to the ground was released after the 2012 rodeo. (WTVA) - The reward to find the person responsible for shooting a circus elephant in Tupelo early Tuesday morning has now jumped significantly. Crime Stoppers of Northeast Mississippi initially offered up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers spokesman Capt. Allan Gilbert tells WTVA.com that Ringling Brothers And Barnum & Bailey Circus has added $10,000. In addition, Capt. Gilbert says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has offered a $5,000 reward, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has offered $5,000, while Travis W. Childers has added $250. Capt. Gilbert says that brings the reward amount up to $21,250. Police say someone shot and injured the 39-year-old Asian elephant known as Carol shortly after 2 o'clock Tuesday morning. The elephant was being kept on the BancorpSouth Arena property in preparation for the Ringling Brothers And Barnum & Bailey Circus scheduled for this week. Authorities say a white or silver Ford Explorer was seen in the area at the time of the shooting. Police have described the incident as a drive-by shooting. WTVA News has reported that a veterinarian has been caring for the injured elephant. The elephant, one of several performing with the traveling circus, was in an enclosure outside the BancorpSouth Arena when it was hit by a bullet in the shoulder, said the arena's marketing director, Kevan Kirkpatrick. "We have had the circus once a year since 1995," Kirkpatrick said. "Absolutely this is the first elephant shooting we had." A security guard on the scene was able to provide some information to the Tupelo Police Department, which is investigating but "leads are pretty slim," said Tupelo Police Capt. Rusty Haynes. "We're dealing with a victim that can't talk." The department has been in touch with state and federal wildlife authorities and, because the Asian elephant is an endangered species, the crime will be pursued as a federal offense under the Endangered Species Act, Haynes said. In addition, he said, the federal government might provide reward money for information leading to the conviction of the responsible person or persons. PETA also is offering a reward of $5,000 to help nab the shooter, said PETA spokesman David Perle, who criticized the circus's handling of elephants. Circus staff and a local large-animal veterinarian immediately calmed the large pachyderm after it was shot and provided it medicine. Within 20 minutes, the animal was walking around the pen and eating carrots, Kirkpatrick said. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus flew in its own veterinarian to follow-up on the 39-year-old female elephant's health. Company spokeswoman Melinda Hartline said "Carol" will be taken to Springfield, Mo., where she'll remain under veterinarian care for several weeks. She is expected to make a full recovery, Hartline said. And the circus will go on as scheduled, with shows set to start Thursday and run through the weekend. In the meantime, city officials have placed an "elephant-sized card" in the lobby of the Convention & Visitors Bureau for Carol that the public is invited to sign.
