Egypt Notebook: Was it really a revolution?

The beach-side Egyptian town of Agamy is shown. The once-popular summer town now has many empty houses, though high-rise buildings are going up on every corner.

Daniele Hamamdjian, CTV News
              Published Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 7:00AM EST
                Last Updated Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 8:48AM

AGAMY, EGPYT -- Off the Egypt tourist track, far from the camel riders of the Giza pyramids and the scuba divers of the Red Sea, is a little village that is one of the country's oldest beach destinations.

For decades, it has been policed by well-organized bedouins and populated, mostly in the summer, by the middle and upper class. On its sandy streets, covered by gigantic palm trees, you heard Arabic mixed with Greek, Italian, English or French. There were no fancy hotels, no monuments, nothing to see really, but it was how it made you feel.

Agamy couldn't be divided, not by class, not by religion. There was nothing quite like it -- and it was ours.

(Daniele Hamamdjian and her mother at Agamy Beach in earlier times)

The village, some 20 kilometres west of Alexandria, is where I spent the first few years of my life. It is where my mother, a Christian, walked to the grocery store in little more than a bikini, and where she was once mocked by construction workers for wearing too many layers on her way to the beach.

	Fast forward 40 years.

This summer, my aunt was strolling along that same street, still unpaved, only to have a construction worker throw a brick her way -- she wasn't wearing enough layers. Her arms and her head were bare.

Many of the homes in Agamy are now empty. Locals say the Agamy of my childhood is nearing its death.

Although high-rise buildings are going up on every empty corner, they will be filled by conservative Islamists -- if they are filled at all. Few of them are properly built. Permits? Since the revolution, nobody's really checking.

"They call it a revolution, but it was never a revolution," says Aya Akel, a liberal Muslim. I became friends with Aya on the beach in Agamy 18 years ago, while we were trying to break away from our big brothers' eagle eyes and smoke a few cigarettes, away from the crowds.

She believes the result of the January 25 Revolution -- as they call it -- is a failure. Young activists sparked it, she says, "but we were cheated by the Muslim Brotherhood."

(Many of the homes in Agamy are now empty. Locals say the Agamy of Daniele's childhood is nearing its death)

During those 11 adrenaline-filled days, as she describes it, Aya was one of those who helped bring medical supplies to the injured. She laughs when I mention democracy. "We should be aspiring to become like Turkey," she says. Instead, "we're heading somewhere between Iran and Saudi Arabia."

Will the government impose the veil? No, "but they are going to make us feel so uncomfortable, many women will choose to wear it just to avoid the harassment," says another friend, Lamia Adham.

I was in Egypt for most of September, not to report but to see what life was really like now. Many wonder, was it worth it?

On one of the many TV talk shows born from the uprising, I watched a debate between the co-host and a member of the committee rewriting the constitution. The topic? The possibility of reducing the minimum age for women to marry, from 18 to just 9. After all, once a girl has her period, she is a woman.

Egyptians are now about to vote on their new constitution, which fails to mention a minimum age, leaving the door dangerously open, according to Amnesty International.

"Daniele," Aya says, "we're f---ed."

Although not in those exact words, my 70-year-old uncle Roger, who shocked the entire family when he joined the crowd at Tahrir Square last year, makes his case:

"My dream of seeing Egypt become a civilized country in my lifetime, I know now, will never happen."

Seattle filmmaker Will Braden captured the Golden Kitty award.

Henri 2, Paw de Deux by Seattle filmmaker Will Braden captured the Golden Kitty, through online votes, at the Cat Video Festival in Minneapolis.

A moody, reflective piece, underlined by a solo piano music track, the black-and-white video follows the cat as he describes his tedious, housebound existence.

"I am free to go, yet I remain," ponders Henri as he peers out the window. "The 15 hours a day I sleep have no effect... I'm surrounded by morons."

Festival curator Katie Hill said the event received more than 10,000 cat video nominations, which were whittled down to a selection of 70 for the screening.

Stabbing prompted Eaton Centre shooting, sources say

Christopher Husbands, charged in connection with the shooting at Toronto's Eaton Centre in which one person was killed and six injured, arrives in court in Toronto on Monday.

Eaton Centre victim remembered

The man killed in the deadly Eaton Centre shooting in Toronto that left six other people wounded apparently stabbed the suspect three months ago, CBC News has learned.

Ahmed Hassan, 24, died in the Saturday evening shooting that plunged the landmark mall in downtown Toronto into chaos as thousands of shoppers fled in terror.

Hassan and another man, a 23-year-old who can't be identified due to a publication ban, were the suspected targets of the shooting, police said Monday.

Toronto police have identified Ahmed Hassan, 24, as the man killed in the shooting in the food court of the Eaton Centre on Saturday. (Toronto Police Service)

The episode left five other innocent bystanders - including a 13-year-old boy - wounded and forced the evacuation of the mall.

Christopher Husbands, 23, of Toronto, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder. Husbands, Hassan and the 23-year-old man who was wounded were all part of the same gang, police say, although they haven't provided any more specifics.

Despite the gang affiliations, police don't believe the shooting was gang-motivated; rather, "personal aspects" were at play, according to Det. Sgt. Brian Borg.

CBC News has now learned more about what may have precipitated the shooting.

Sources say that the shooting may have been an act of retribution, as it appears Hassan stabbed the alleged shooter in March while robbing him.

Hassan himself had survived two previous attempts on his life, CBC News has learned. Hassan faced drug charges in Fort McMurray, Alta. - he was charged with cocaine trafficking in January 2010 along with five other people.

He was also charged with obstructing a police officer and possession of stolen goods.

One of Hassan's co-accused, a 19-year-old man from the Toronto area, was killed three months later in a Fort McMurray apartment.

Christopher Husbands was under house arrest for a sexual assault charge at the time of the Eaton Centre shooting. (Alex Tavshunsky/CBC)

The victim's father, Abdul Kadir Ali, told CBC News that Hassan was a suspect in the death of his son, Abdinasir Dirie.

Hassan was out on bail at the time for the alleged forcible confinement of another Fort McMurray man, Jama Ahmed Mahamoud, in September 2008.

Hassan fled Alberta last year for Toronto. Hassan failed to appear in court on the cocaine trafficking charges, and at the time of the Eaton Centre shooting, there were two outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Meanwhile, CBC News has learned that the 23-year-old man who was wounded was accused of robbing teens at gunpoint in Toronto's Riverdale Park in 2007. When police arrived on the scene, they shot and killed his accomplice, according to sources.

Meanwhile, at the time of the Eaton Centre shooting, Husbands was under house arrest for a sexual assault charge, for which he is due to appear in court on June 25.

He is expected to appear in court on Aug. 15 for the Eaton Centre shooting.
