Did I say stakes? I meant to say steaks.
Florida man kills door-to-door salesman: I'll kill anybody that steps on my property
A man in Cape Coral, Florida on Wednesday was arrested for shooting and killing an unarmed door-to-door salesman on his property.

Kenneth Bailey Roop, 52, has been charged with second-degree murder for killing 30-year-old Nicholas Rainey.

A co-worker who witnessed the shooting said
Rainey had knocked on Roop's door, but received no answer. While Rainey
was walking down the drive-way, Roop pulled up in his pickup truck and
asked why Rainey was at his house. Rainey explained that he was selling
steak and seafood. The witness said Roop then pulled out a black handgun
and shot Rainey. As Rainey lay on the ground, Roop fired another bullet
into the back of his head.
Roop later told police that he shot Rainey in the head "for
effect" and that he had three no trespassing signs on his property. Roop
said he feared for his life.
"I'm not going to give him the chance to do something to me," he told police. "I was in fear."

An off-duty Collier County sheriff's deputy was nearby and heard the
gunshots. When she arrived at Roop's property, she found Rainey dying on
the ground while Roop was in his garage reloading his handgun.
"He was telling the officer, 'he stepped on my property, he
trespassed, I'll kill anybody that steps on my property,' somewhere
along them lines. It was just unbelievable," one witness told the The
News-Press. "She never flinched. She deserves a medal. I don't think he
was done ."
The deputy ordered Roop to drop his weapon and held him at gunpoint until police officers arrived.

Roop's neighbors described him as "the neighborhood crazy." Roop has a concealed weapons permit and approximately 14 firearms.

The question not yet asked: What do Limbaugh's fans think of Sandra Fluke?

In the drama between Rush Limbaugh and
Sandra Fluke, a crucial demographic has slipped beneath the radar of
mainstream media: Rush Limbaugh fans. As they are many in number, it
does society a disservice to ignore what they think and feel. Such
strong opinions should be expressed in the spotlight.

Many in mainstream media wrung their
hands after the Rush Limbaugh incident - surely, they posited, this
is not what political discourse had diminished to. Limbaugh pummeled
Fluke with vile, sexist rhetoric - calling her "slut,"
"prostitute," and perhaps most galling of all, demanding she film
pornographic video as the debt that she must repay to society - all
for the audacity of asking for easier access to contraception.
Surely, we have not sank to so low a level?

Let's find out what some American
Rush-listeners think. The following are actual comments issued in
LiveLeak video threads concerning the Limbaugh/Fluke incident:

"I don't mind paying for this bitch's
birth control. Considering by the way she speaks, she's been taking
it too much in the mouth as it is. Ensuring that she doesn't
procreate is much wiser than letting her bear a child." -

"her parents should be proud that
she's such a successful slut on campus." - Amusing,
( http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=9c1_1330722583&comments=1 )

"Waaaaa! My skeezy boyfriend won't
where a condom! Waaaa! Notice how liberals have abandoned all the
real issues and have started ranting and raving about birth control?
It's because they've lost the discussion on every important matter.
Voters will be voting according to gas prices, unemployment, and the
economy. Unfortunately for those who think that the best way to help
the economy is to give money to the government to pay people not to
work." - ST0N3PONY,

"I wouldn't mind footin the bill to
make sure a feminazi/libtard does not procreate. If I ruled America,
all libs would be spayed/neutered." - AgnostiConservative,
( http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=9c1_1330722583&comments=1 )

"You are a whore and you want the
Government to pay for your contraception? They gonna buy my condoms?
What a whore! They are going for abortion all the way!" -

hailed a heroine. She can afford an education at a university but she
cannot afford condoms????? Stupid whore....windbag....yenta." -

Oh, David Axelrod you fucking genius of opportunity. The cum sponge

sponge is also a pawn. Yes, mommy and daddy are just gushing with
pride right now, sponge." - Yorba,

"My
tax money should not pay to have this woman spread her legs. if she
cant afford contraceptives she either needs to sleep with men she can
trust or just not fuck at all. how the fuck does this shit even get
to congress. what the fuck is going on in this country. how the hell
are we in a huge fucking debt and now girls like this want us to pay
for their contraceptives so they can go fuck freely without getting
pregnant. we have more realistic issues at hand than girls wanting to
spread their legs and get reimbursed for it." - OnlyLiarsBlock,

slut or keep your legs closed till ya can support yourself." -

"She is a Slut-Pelosi is a slut--RUSH

loser.

"Ya--lets all pay for her and others like her to be
able to fuck everyone she comes into contact with while going to
college---all she needs to do is not spread her legs." - jegsman,

"she's
a debased harlot and everything that is evil about liberalism, i'm
not a religious man but her combination of deranged sodomy and demand
that citizens pay for it, along with Obamas phone call of support for
this communist troglodyte, really makes me wonder if we are living in
an age of Sodom and gommora, with Obama leading the helm as the
anti-christ, that being said, the democrats are pimping this harlot
as as an object to rally around because to discuss anything else,
like the horrible state of the economy, the intentional rise in gas
prices by this administration, the trillions of wasted dollars in
crony communist and union slush funds, would mean a early exit from
the white house by Barack Hussein Obama" - golem,
( http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=4c4_1330820768&comments=1#comments )

Well.

There you are, America.

Slut. Whore. Cum-sponge. She should
keep her legs shut. She should stop fucking every male on campus.
These are the thoughts and opinions of your countrymen. True
patriots, all. How dare this common harlot request a shaving of
public funds for her selfish counter-reproductive purposes,
especially at a time when our nation's money is better spent dropping
bombs on foreign nations?

As many of these commenters insisted,
their thoughts are their own and theirs alone - even though many
parrot Rush Limbaugh's recent radio show near-verbatim. This leaves
me to wonder: what kind of creature could be this full of hate? What
kind of miserly, spiteful wretch could visit a public forum and
excrete so dense a mass of compact venom? What kind of easily
programmable drone could so unerringly adapt their opinion to that of
an offensive and soon-to-be out-of-work radio jock? Are the hateful
words of one Oxycontin-addicted demagogue sufficient to cement the
opinion of so many Americans so rapidly?

Tea Party Plans Premeditated FelonyBy Paul I. Tascoupe

Madison -- The kick off campaign to recall embattled
governor Scott Walker kicks off in just four days and with that date
approaching, the tea party has plans of its own. Politiscoop has
received several screen shots of tea party and right wing activists
planning to pass themselves off as those circulating petitions to recall
the governor.
In one facebook post a user named Charles Atlas Shrugging begins the plan by saying "I'd like to collect signatures of those who want to recall Walker...so I can have something to feed my shredder.."

In another such post Matt Wynns who claims to be a small business owner states "I
shall be heating my home with recall signature. as they sign, I'll make
sure to tell them not to sign another petition. I figure I can get a
hundred to a few hundred signatures off the ballot. F*#&* (Word
edited) Liberals.
The list of disgusting posts go on, even after a user reminded each
and every one of them that their plans would violate Wisconsin statutes.
It makes me wonder if the media will pick up on these plans and make it
public knowledge, just as they did with the Scott Walker death threat
on facebook. I agree all threats are serious and have no place in the
arena, but if I were to compare these posts to the suggestive post about
Scott Walker, I would have to say these are more pointed, planned and
with the intent of harming Democracy as well as
those circulating petitions.
As you click the links below and read their posts, some even suggest
using the castle doctrine as a way to dissuade people taking part in
their democracy. In essence, these individuals are breaking the terms of
service of Facebook by the use of intimidation and or bullying.
Furthermore, these individuals have now publicly planned to commit a
felony in the state of Wisconsin.
Politiscoop contacted the Democratic Party of Wisconsin for a
statement in regards to these facebook posts. Graeme Zielinski the party
spokesman had this to say.
Destroying petitions or engaging in the acts you describe are
serious felonies. However, these threats are intended to sow confusion.
We won't let them win, especially not like this. Petitions will be
clearly marked and the circulators will be identified by a lanyard, but
if anyone thinks they were tricked, they can come to one of our
30-plus recall offices and sign a petition, which we will make sure is
scanned properly and sent to our collection site. But again, the
behavior you describe would be highly illegal.
With the GOP and Tea Party activists going so far to reveal their
plans on facebook, only shows that they have now dropped the gauntlet,
the battle is now on. The grassroots groups in tandem with the
Democratic Party of Wisconsin have set November 15th to begin recalling
Scott Walker. If this story angers you, then contact your local
democratic party recall office and ask how you can help, contribute and
do your part in reclaiming the state. You can also visit their website here .
Here are the disgusting screen shots. Be warned some are very vile.

The Eight Stages of Genocide, and America's Position on the List

By Tom Czerniawski

I was wasting time on Wikipedia when, in the course of my meandering search, I ran across the entry for genocide.

I saw something that caught my attention and, frankly, worried me. The following is lifted largely verbatim from that Wikipedia article:

"In 1996 Gregory Stanton, the president of Genocide Watch, presented a briefing paper called "The 8 Stages of Genocide" at the United States Department of State. In it he suggested that genocide develops in eight stages that are "predictable but not inexorable".

The Stanton paper was presented at the State Department, shortly after the Rwanda genocide and much of the analysis is based on why that genocide occurred. The preventative measures suggested, given the original target audience, were those that the United States could implement directly or use their influence on other governments to have implemented"

The Wiki entry then continues to go over each of these 8 stages:

1.Classification: People are divided into "us and them".
2.Symbolization: When combined with hatred, symbols may be forced upon unwitting members of pariah groups.
3.Dehumanization: One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, or diseases.
4.Organization: Genocide is always organized... special army units or militias are often trained and armed.
5.Polarization: Hate groups begin to broadcast polarizing propaganda.
6.Preparation: Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity.
7.Extermination: "It is "extermination" to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human."
8.Denial: The perpetrators deny that they committed any crimes.

It struck me that, using this as a check-list, America was pretty far down. Almost at "genocide," really. Some may be inclined to fervently disagree, but consider each stage on this grim procession.

Classification: Do I really need to back this point up with evidence, or is the nation's division along racial lines not yet blatantly obvious? We all have names for the races outside our own, and they tend not to be friendly terms.

Symbolization: The very race of an individual has come to symbolize their stereotypical role in American society. Black? Gang member, criminal. Muslim? Terrorist, cab driver.

Dehumanization: I would like to enter into evidence as exhibit A, the comments section of a video titled "Violence in another McDonalds almost kills customer."

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ec0_1303444048&comments=1#comments

While the crime in the video is abhorrent on its own merits, the reactions of LiveLeak posters are galling. Animals? Check. Diseases? Check. Vermin? Check. Would these terms be used if the situation were reversed, where the offender was white, and the victim black?

Let's find out in just such a video:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=8dc_1247056460

A comment by user PresidentZero: "It is only news when white people attack a black. He came after them at one point instead of walking away, so he is clearly not an innocent little lamb like they are trying to portray him.

Usually, it is the other way around. Gangs of vicious blacks murdering, raping, robbing, carjacking, selling drugs, holding up stores, shooting off their big ignorant mouths...

Don't worry folks, the race war is coming. 50 million blacks dragging down America was fine during the days of prosperity, but now under Obamunism and a collapsing economy, economic tension will breed increasing social tension and the breaking point will not be far behind.

WTSHTF day is not too far off now..."

A black man is attacked by a gang of whites. The comments section attempts painting him as the criminal, and fantasizes about the coming race war against the blacks.

Well, that's three points out of eight.

Point number four: Organization. As evidence, I would like to enter the growing Minuteman movement, purportedly created to guard America's borders and maintain the sanctity of our Lebensraum. Already, these militias have flexed their murderous muscle, as evidenced by the grim events surrounding Shawna Forde, whose para-military posse rounded up a Mexican family and executed them in cold blood. Beyond the Minutemen, there are hundreds of established hate groups ranging from the Aryan Brotherhood to the Black Panthers, each a violent manifestation of fear and anger directed at an opposing race.

Point number five: Polarization. Tune in to Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck lately? Their slice of the airwaves appeals - let's be honest with ourselves - to racists. Whether screaming about the grave anti-American offense of the NYC mosque site, or President Obama's secret racism against white people, these demagogues whip the most violent elements of our society into a froth, and focus their hatred like a laser upon non-white minorities.

Five out of eight. Scary stuff, isn't it?

I look forward to reading your comments.

http://www.laprogressive.com/law-and-the-justice-system/black-men-prison-system/

More Black Men Now in Prison System than Were Enslaved
By Dick Price

"More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began," Michelle Alexander told a standing room only house at the Pasadena Main Library this past Wednesday, the first of many jarring points she made in a riveting presentation.

Alexander, currently a law professor at Ohio State, had been brought in to discuss her year-old bestseller, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness More Black Men Now in Prison System than Were Enslaved. Interest ran so high beforehand that the organizers had to move the event to a location that could accommodate the eager attendees. That evening, more than 200 people braved the pouring rain and inevitable traffic jams to crowd into the library's main room, with dozens more shuffled into an overflow room, and even more latecomers turned away altogether. Alexander and her topic had struck a nerve.

Growing crime rates over the past 30 years don't explain the skyrocketing numbers of black - and increasingly brown - men caught in America's prison system, according to Alexander, who clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun after attending Stanford Law. "In fact, crime rates have fluctuated over the years and are now at historical lows."

"Most of that increase is due to the War on Drugs, a war waged almost exclusively in poor communities of color," she said, even though studies have shown that whites use and sell illegal drugs at rates equal to or above blacks. In some black inner-city communities, four of five black youth can expect to be caught up in the criminal justice system during their lifetimes.

As a consequence, a great many black men are disenfranchised, said Alexander - prevented because of their felony convictions from voting and from living in public housing, discriminated in hiring, excluded from juries, and denied educational opportunities.

"What do we expect them to do?" she asked, who researched her ground-breaking book while serving as Director of the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU of Northern California. "Well, seventy percent return to prison within two years, that's what they do."

Organized by the Pasadena Public Library and the Flintridge Center, with a dozen or more cosponsors, including the ACLU Pasadena/Foothills Chapter and Neighborhood Church, and the LA Progressive as the sole media sponsor, the event drew a crowd of the converted, frankly - more than two-thirds from Pasadena's well-established black community and others drawn from activists circles. Although Alexander is a polished speaker on a deeply researched topic, little she said stunned the crowd, which, after all, was the choir. So the question is what to do about this glaring injustice.

Married to a federal prosecutor, Alexander briefly touched on the differing opinion in the Alexander household. "You can imagine the arguments we have," Alexander said in relating discussions she has with her husband. "He thinks there are changes we can make within the system," she said, agreeing that there are good people working on the issues and that improvements can be made. "But I think there has to be a revolution of some kind."

However change is to come, a big impediment will be the massive prison-industrial system.

"If we were to return prison populations to 1970 levels, before the War on Drugs began," she said. "More than a million people working in the system would see their jobs disappear."

So it's like America's current war addiction. We have built a massive war machine - one bigger than all the other countries in the world combined - with millions of well-paid defense industry and billions of dollars at stake. With a hammer that big, every foreign policy issue looks like a nail - another bomb to drop, another country to invade, another massive weapons development project to build.

Similarly, with such a well-entrenched prison-industrial complex in place - also with a million jobs and billions of dollars at stake - every criminal justice issue also looks like a nail - another prison sentence to pass down, another third strike to enforce, another prison to build in some job-starved small town, another chance at a better life to deny.

Alexander, who drew her early inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., devotes the last part of "The New Jim Crow" to steps people can take to combat this gross injustice. In particular, she recommended supporting the Drug Policy Alliance. At the book signing afterwards, Dr. Anthony Samad recruited Michelle Alexander to appear this fall at one his Urban Issues Forums, typically at the California African American Museum next to USC.

I'm not an American, I just play one on Liveleak.

My name is Tom Czerniawski. I'm a Polish-born citizen of Canada. I have never lived in the United States. Many of you know me from my posts as "hellgremlin" on this website. I'm a journalist by trade. I'm sure the above information has sent at least a few of you to Google. You can find me quite easily there. My address, my phone number - why, I'm sure a few of you are making plans to kill me already.

Until recently, most of you thought I was an American. This was my doing. I knew that if I had the Canadian flag icon, most of the Americans on this website would discount anything I said as un-American. I impersonated a U.S. citizen to get at what really fascinated me - the mind of the American. Their thoughts, their feelings, their opinions.

What I found... has terrified me to the core.

America is supposed to be the apex of human civilization - the land of the free, the home of the brave. The great melting pot, where cultures come together and build on each others' strengths to create one great nation.

What I found instead, is a nation - to quote one of your past presidents - divided. What I found was rampant white-supremacist support. What I found was a community of people perfectly comfortable in judging other human beings by virtue of income, race and skin colour.

LiveLeak posters regularly post videos of black people committing crime - and use them to perpetuate the view that all black people are criminals.

LiveLeak posters exhibit behaviours extremely similar to Germans during the ascent of the national socialist party to power.

LiveLeak posters frequently express desires to inflict violence upon blacks, Mexicans, muslims and all other non-caucasian races.

What I was trying to do in this grand social experiment, was roleplay the part of an American with only humanitarian opinions. Whenever murder happened, I spoke out against it - whether the murder was committed by a black gangster thug, or a white American soldier. What I was trying to do, is speak out against violence in any form. What I was trying to do, was to make a stand against injustice, unfairness, and the abuse of the common man. I spoke out against corporations who benefited from war. I spoke out against racists who wanted to imprison anyone with a dermal albedo of less than 10%.

Because I spoke out against these horrors - racism, killing, hunger, war - I received the most thumbs-down of any poster on LiveLeak per post. (I researched this, it's true - it's me.) For speaking out against racism, killing, hunger and war, I quickly became the most hated member of this website.

Think about that, citizens of America. Think about the people posting here. Think about what they are. Think about what you are. Think about all the lives that your rhetoric claims. Think about all the hatred you are generating worldwide.

You are not the land of the free, as long as you incarcerate two to three million of your citizens. You are not the home of the brave, crowing about the justice of America's many wars, while your armies are sent abroad and you sit stateside, pounding away at computer keys.

I'm going to get one heck of an article out of this.

I'll leave you, fine Americans, with a quote I found very beautiful. It is inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!

Cries she, with silent lips,

Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free!

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore!

Send these, the homeless, the tempest-tossed to me!

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

A sonnet, by Emma Lazarus. Interesting how things have changed. I hope you fellows see what is wrong with you.

You have become a nation of hatred.

New Report: 'Higher Hate Group Count Than Ever'

http://www.npr.org/2011/02/23/133970226/new-report-higher-hate-group-count-than-ever

By Carrie Johnson

A new study by the Southern Poverty Law Center describes a big rise in hate groups across the country.

By its count, there are now more than 1,000 active extremist groups in the U.S. Experts say the largest increase comes from militias that consider the federal government their enemy.

Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the law center, has been studying hate groups for a long time. But Potok says even he was surprised when he started counting extremists for his annual report.

"We have absolutely explosive growth of these groups in 2009," Potok says. "And what we have now found is that that growth continued through 2010. We have a higher hate group count than we've ever had."

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks extremist movements, says there are three major reasons for the increase: the bad economy, the wide reach of the Internet and changing racial patterns in the country.

Experts say the most negative energy seems to be coming from people who think the federal government is conspiring to take away their freedom.

"It is not ... harmless in the sense that the patriot movement has produced a great deal of criminal violence," Potok says. "There were an enormous number of plots that came out of the patriot movement, particularly in the late 1990s, and we're beginning to see that again."

Jim Cavanaugh, a retired federal investigator at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has built cases against a lot of extremists.

"You know, it's the challenge of American law enforcement to see through the smoke and try to get to the people who are really going to try to hurt somebody," Cavanaugh says.

In many cases, that means people at the fringes of organized groups who carry out plots on their own.

Take the police blotter in January, for instance.

That month, authorities arrested a neo-Nazi headed for the Southwest border. He was carrying a dozen homemade grenades. Police hauled in another man in Dearborn, Mich. They said he had a history of fighting with the federal government, long before he parked near a crowded mosque with explosives in his car.

The FBI and local authorities are still trying to find out who put a bomb on the parade route in Spokane, Wash., just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Cavanaugh says he thinks more people need to start talking about hate groups, because, he says, a movement gets stronger when it hides in the shadows.

The new SPLC report might help jump-start that discussion.

Teabagger Shawna Forde sentenced to Fry

By CNN Wire staff

(CNN) -- Arizona jurors decided an anti-illegal immigration activist -- portrayed as the ringleader of a hit squad -- should receive the death penalty for the killings of a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter, a court spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The Pima County jury's decision, which was unanimous, is binding.

If the jury had not voted for the death penalty, the judge would have decided whether Shawna Forde should have received life with a chance of parole after 35 years or life with no possibility of parole.

Forde was convicted February 14 on eight counts, including two counts of murder for the shooting deaths of Raul Flores and his daughter, Brisenia, and the attempted murder of the child's mother, Gina Gonzales.

The vigilante attacks were in May 2009. The child and her father were American-born U.S. citizens but were targeted by Forde and her hit squad.

Her alleged accomplices, Albert Robert Gaxiola and Jason Eugene Bush, are scheduled to go on trial later this year.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Forde as the ringleader, saying she had planned the raid and the murders to steal weapons, money and drugs to finance a new anti-illegal immigration outfit.

The trio picked the Flores home, prosecutors said, because Gaxiola claimed they would find drugs there.

While Flores had a history of drug-related offenses, no drugs were found in the house.

Gina Gonzalez gave a victim impact statement last week.

"I miss my husband, I miss my daughter, I miss my family, I miss my life ... and that's all because of a choice she made," Gonzales said of Forde, according to CNN Tucson affiliate KVOA.

The defense told the jury that Forde has a personality disorder caused by a childhood of abuse, abandonment and living in seven different households by the age of 5, according to KVOA.

The jury also convicted Forde on two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of burglary, armed robbery and aggravated robbery.

Posing as border patrol and law enforcement officers, Forde, Gaxiola and Bush, whom prosecutors identified as the gunman, showed up at the Flores home after midnight, several hours after the family had returned from a shopping trip in Tucson to buy shoes for their daughter for summer camp.

Brisenia was sleeping on the couch with her puppy when the group demanded to be let into the home. They accused Flores of harboring illegal aliens and said the house was surrounded by agents.

Once inside, the gunman shot Flores in the chest and Gonzales in the leg. Brisenia was later shot as she pleaded for her life.

Jewelry taken from the Flores home was later found in Forde's possession. Text messages discovered on her phone also implicated her in the crime.

Forde belonged to the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps before her removal for what former fellow members described as unstable behavior, according to news reports.

Forde then formed a splinter group, Minutemen American Defense. She led protests against illegal immigration and patrolled the Arizona-Mexico border armed with weapons.

Bush was the group's national director of operations, according to reports.

Vatican letter revealed, proving Church conspired to conceal sex abuse

A newly revealed 1997 letter from the Vatican warned Ireland's Catholic bishops not to report all suspected child-abuse cases to police - a disclosure with the potential to fuel more lawsuits worldwide against the Vatican, which has long denied any involvement in coverups.

The letter, obtained by Irish broadcasters RTE and provided to The Associated Press, documents the Vatican's rejection of an Irish church initiative to begin helping police identify pedophile priests.

The letter's message undermines persistent Vatican claims that the church never instructed bishops to withhold evidence or suspicion of crimes from police. Instead, the letter emphasizes the church's right to handle all child-abuse allegations and determine punishments in house rather than hand that power to civil authorities.

Catholic officials in Ireland declined requests for comment on the letter, which RTE said it received from an Irish bishop.

Child-abuse activists in Ireland said the 1997 letter should demonstrate, once and for all, that the protection of pedophile priests from criminal investigation was not only sanctioned by Vatican leaders but ordered by them. A key argument employed by the Vatican in defending dozens of lawsuits over clerical sex abuse in Canada and the United States is that it had no role in ordering local church authorities to suppress evidence of crimes.

"The letter is of huge international significance, because it shows that the Vatican's intention is to prevent reporting of abuse to criminal authorities," said Colm O'Gorman, director of the Irish chapter of human rights watchdog Amnesty International. "And if that instruction applied here, it applied everywhere."

To this day, the Vatican has yet to endorse any of the Irish church's three major policy documents since 1996 on reporting suspected child abuse to civil authorities. In his 2010 pastoral letter to the Irish people condemning pedophiles in the ranks, Pope Benedict XVI faulted Ireland's bishops for failing to follow canon law and offered no explicit endorsement of child-protection efforts by the Irish church or state.
Policy in place for years?

O'Gorman - who was raped repeatedly by an Irish priest when he was an altar boy and was among the first victims to speak out in the mid-1990s - said evidence is mounting that some Irish bishops continued to follow the 1997 Vatican instructions and withheld reports of crimes against children as recently as 2008.

A third major state-ordered investigation into Catholic abuse coverups, concerning the southwest Irish diocese of Cloyne, is expected to be published within the next few months.

Two state-commissioned reports published in 2009 unveiled decades of coverups of abuse involving tens of thousands of children since the 1930s.

Irish church leaders didn't begin telling police about suspected pedophile priests until the mid-1990s. In January 1996, Irish bishops published a groundbreaking policy document spelling out their newfound determination to report all suspected abuse cases to police.

But in the January 1997 letter seen Tuesday by the AP, the Vatican's diplomat in Ireland at the time, Archbishop Luciano Storero, told the bishops a senior church panel in Rome, the Congregation for the Clergy, had decided the Irish church's year-old policy of "mandatory" reporting of abuse claims conflicted with canon law.
Irish church told to follow 'canon law'

Storero emphasized in the letter that the Irish church's policy was not recognized by the Vatican and was "merely a study document." He said canon law, which required abuse allegations to be handled within the church, "must be meticulously followed."

Storero, who died in 2000, wrote, without elaborating, that mandatory reporting of child-abuse claims to police "gives rise to serious reservations of both a moral and a canonical nature."

He warned that bishops who followed the Irish child-protection policy and reported a priest's suspected crimes to police ran the risk of having their in-house punishments of the priest overturned by the Congregation for the Clergy.

The letter, originally obtained by the RTE religious affairs program Would You Believe? said the Congregation for the Clergy in Rome was pursuing "a global study" of sexual-abuse policies and would establish worldwide child-protection policies "at the appropriate time."

The Vatican's child-protection policies today remain in legal limbo. It currently advises bishops worldwide to report crimes to police only in a legally non-binding lay guide, but it does not mention this in the official legal document provided by another powerful church body, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which continues to stress the secrecy of canon law.

The central message of Storero's letter was reported second-hand by two priests as part of Ireland's mammoth investigation into the 1975-2004 coverup of hundreds of child-abuse cases in the Dublin Archdiocese. The letter itself, marked "strictly confidential," has never been published before.

----------------------

So let's review:

Pope to the world: "We will root out the scourge of child abuse among the clergy, and co-operate with authorities to bring these abusers to justice."

Pope to the clergy: "If you catch each other banging kids DON'T TELL THE COPS AND KEEP IT QUIET."

Just like Jesus would have wanted!

By MAGGIE HABERMAN | 1/9/11 9:46 AM EST Updated: 1/9/11 11:55 AM EST

The feds are reportedly probing whether shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner has ties to an anti-Semitic, anti-government hate group that has ads for tea party organizations on its website.

A Department of Homeland Security memo quoted by Fox News says the agency is looking into whether Loughner is "possibly linked" to the fanatical group American Renaissance.

The group promotes views that are "anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government), anti-Semitic," the memo says.

It's not immediately clear that Loughner is actually a member.

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the target of Loughner's firing frenzy, is "the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the U.S. government. She was also opposite the group's ideology when it came to immigration debate," according the memo.

The group's website features what appear to be paid advertisements for tea party versions of the "don't tread on me" flag.

Jared Taylor, editor of American Renaissance, made clear in an interview with Fox News that the group considers itself a think tank of sorts with a conservative circular that's available by subscription.

Asked about the memo, he said, "That is complete nonsense. I have absolutely no idea what DHS is talking about."

He told the cable channel that his group checked subscriber lists for its circular and found no record of Loughner subscribing or attending events.

Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, described the American Renaissance's journal as a "kind of white-collar, white supremicists outlet, better described as white nationalists" that is read by "pseudo intellectuals" and "academic racists."

He said the group focuses on race and IQ issues, specifically that African Americans are not as intelligent as whites.

The group had a debate about whether they should also concentrate on Jews, but the majority "was not into that," Potok said.

"Jared Taylor is not an anti-Semite," Potok said.

Antisemitic, check. Racist, check. Anti-immigration, check. Anti-government, check. Sounds like a lot of Liveleakers. I always thought many Liveleak posters sounded dangerously mentally ill, many posting frequent threats and calls to use violence to effect political change. I wonder what his account name was.

Actually, I wonder how many of *you* are threats to society.

Rupert Murdoch's media empire has set what may be a new standard of shamelessness by marking the anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks with the publication of a map of human remains that appears to have been developed for the New York Fire Department in 2002 but was never previously released.

"Here's the chilling proof that Ground Zero stretches well beyond the boundaries of the World Trade Center site," Murdoch's New York Post boasted. "The map was obtained by The Post from sources after the Fire Department did not respond to requests to review it. It shows that remains were found just 348 feet to the south of the mosque site at 45 Park Place."

Although the Post article does not make it clear how the map was obtained, it appears that the Fire Department was opposed to its release.

An even more ominous version of the same map, with lurid red dots glowing like puddles of freshly-spilled blood against a dark background, was deployed by the hosts of Fox News' Fox & Friends on Friday morning.

The map indicates that human remains or traces of DNA were concentrated directly at the former World Trade center site, but there are a few dots further away, including three between 350 and 400 feet -- about one and a half city blocks -- from the proposed site of an Islamic cultural center.

"The reason we bring this up," Fox's Doocy explained, "is because the imam himself said, 'Look, this site is not ground zero proper. Nobody's body was near that location.' ... To the people who lost loved ones, it is sacred ground -- and, we should point out, 1,100 people's remains to this day have still not been identified."

Doocy did not mention that most of the structural steel from ground zero -- probably including some of those unidentified remains -- was quickly shipped to a Staten Island landfill for scrap processing, with 50,000 tons winding up going to Shanghai and another 10,000 to India.

Outrage at use of the map for this kind of political purpose has been swift. One response in a comment thread at Media Matters asked, "Are they going to reenact the day on 9/11? This is sickening."

"Agreed," added another. "It's disgustingly morbid. Next they'll start showing pictures of the people that died there and ask 'Do you think they'd want it built there?'"

A New York City blog reprinted the Post map with the addition of other local landmarks. "We made their map better," the Awl notes grimly. "Human remains: YOU'RE SHOPPING IN IT. You're BOXING IN IT. You're DRINKING IN IT and ATTENDING CUNY IN IT and you're GOLDMAN SACHSING IN IT."

The Fox segment also focused on recent remarks by the imam who plans to build the community center. Imam Feisal Adbul Rauf told ABC's Christiane Amanpour on Thursday that any agreement to move the building's location further away from the site of the former World Trade Center would be a "wrong move."

"This issue has riveted the attention of the whole Muslim world," he explained. "Let's say we moved under this current circumstance with this dialogue. What will be the headline tomorrow? 'Islam under attack in America.' ... That will feed the radicals. So diffusing terrorism is a necessity for our national security."

"It sounds to me like a warning," Fox's Brian Kilmeade said suspiciously.

"It almost seems now like they intended to incite this sort of reaction from Americans," Gretchen Carlson suggested, "so that they could come full circle and say what the imam said the other night, which was, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, if you move it now, we've going to attack you."

"That statement to me is the most troubling statement of this entire discussion," she concluded. "And it made me wonder, did they do this on purpose?"
