By 2050 more than half of adults will be seriously overweight and tough measures are needed to prevent the situation spiralling completely out of control, the UK's 220,000 doctors warn. They want action from the Government, NHS, councils, food firms and parents in order to stop "generation after generation falling victim to obesity-related illness and death", according to The Guardian . Doctors are united in viewing obesity - the consequences of which include diabetes, heart disease and cancer - as the single greatest public health crisis facing the country, the report says. The report criticises both current and previous governments for "piecemeal and disappointingly ineffective" attempt to deal with the problem, given that one in four adults in England is obese and these figures are set to climb to 60 per cent of men, 50 per cent of women, and 25 per cent of women over the next 37 years. The statistics have made the UK the "fat man of Europe", leading the academy to draw up a 10-point-plan at the end of their year long consultation on the topic. Measures in the plan include a 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks which could raise lb1billion; a council-imopsed limit the number of fast food outlets in areas where children gather including near schools and leisure centres; for NHS staff to discuss eating habits with patients; and for the organisation to invest lb300million over the next three years in weight management programmes. The doctors also want to see an increase in bariatric surgery for those at risk of death, nutritional standards to be adopted in hospitals where they believe vending machines and fast food outlets should be banned, for health visitors to give nutritional advice to new parents, and for all schools in the country to serve healthy food in their canteens. Obesity already costs the NHS lb5.1billion a year and it is feared that the figure will rise to lb10billion by 2050, and the health service will reach to a point where it cannot cope. Currently academies are exempt from standards on healthy eating which the report says is an "extraordinary own goal" for Michael Gove. Professor Terence Stephenson, the academy's chairman, says that society needs to work together to prevent the crisis becoming "unresolvable". Public opinion needs to be persuaded to turn against unhealthy habits in the same way that it did smoking, it is claimed.
