      <title>Drone attack 'kills two Britons' in Pakistan - They were white.</title>

      <description>White British al-Qaida members said to have died in Hellfire missile strike by US drone near town of Datta Khel

The Foreign Office was investigating reports last night that two white British al-Qaida members had been killed in a drone attack in Pakistan. The Britons are said to have died in a Hellfire missile strike by a remote-controlled US Predator drone near the town of Datta Khel five days ago.

The militants, aged 48 and 25, using the pseudonyms Abu Bakr and Mansoor Ahmed, were apparently in a vehicle in the mountainous region with two other fighters at the time.

The Foreign Office said: &quot;We are aware of media reports of the death of two British nationals in Pakistan. Our high commission in Pakistan is seeking further information on these reports.&quot;

If confirmed, the men, one of whom apparently originally had the name Steve, would be the first white British converts to have been killed in the area.

The pair came to Pakistan last year and travelled to a town in North Waziristan in the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan to join al-Qaida, Channel Four news reported.

Another British militant, Abdul Jabber, who was of Asian descent, died in September in a drone attack. Along with his brother, he was allegedly suspected of planning attacks on European cities.

There have been at least 25 US drone attacks in Pakistan since then, killing around 50 people. The tactic has been stepped up as the US attempts to tackle groups of fighters in Pakistani villages and compounds.

The strikes are not officially acknowledged by the CIA and are a subject of lively debate inside the US system, the WikiLeaks diplomatic cables have shown. Last year ambassador Anne Patterson argued that increased &quot;unilateral operations&quot; risked &quot;destabilising the Pakistani state&quot; and ultimately hindering the US goal of expelling al-Qaida from the region.

North Waziristan is home to hundreds of Pakistani and foreign Islamist militants, many belonging to or allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban. The region also hosts the Haqqani network, a powerful insurgent group that US officials say is behind many of the attacks on US and Nato forces across the border in Afghanistan.

      <title>Birds choose death.. for unknown reason.</title>

      <description>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article7057494.ece

The RSPCA is investigating the sudden death of more than 100 starlings that witnesses claim simply fell from the sky and landed in a front garden.

Julie Knight, a nurse, returned home from a shift at Glastonbury hospital in Somerset to find her small lawn in Coxley littered with scores of dead and dying birds.

The RSPCA has so far failed to find a reason for the birds' deaths. Disease, toxic chemicals, poison gas clouds and flying into a building or power lines are all considered unlikely or have been discounted.

The birds were close together when they died as most of the corpses fell within the 12ft diameter of Mrs Knight's garden. Several were still alive and had to be put down when a vet arrived.

Mrs Knight was told by a neighbour that the flock &quot;fell&quot; from the sky at 4pm on Sunday, half an hour before she arrived home. She said: &quot;One of my neighbours said they literally seemed to just fall out of the sky. About 70 were dead straight away.

&quot;She said it was like something out of a horror film. It was absolutely terrifying. The sky was raining starlings.&quot; RSPCA animal welfare officer Alison Sparkes was alerted by police and discovered that most of the birds had broken beaks, broken legs and wings and abdominal injuries consistent with impact, but were otherwise in a healthy condition.

Five surviving birds were taken to the RSPCA's West Hatch wildlife centre in Taunton but had to be put down because of their injuries.

Ms Sparkes said: &quot;It was a remarkable sight and I've never seen anything like it before. Onlookers said they heard a whooshing sound and then the birds just hit the ground. They had fallen on to the ground in quite a small area, about 12ft in diameter.

&quot;Our best guess is that this happened because the starlings were trying to escape a predator such as a sparrow hawk and ended up crash landing.&quot;

Lloyd Scott, of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, said it was unlikely that the birds had simply flown into each other. Starlings are well known for their spectacular displays of co-ordinated flight.

Mr Scott said: &quot;Starlings relate each movement to the seven birds closest to them when flying around in a murmuration. They are hardwired into doing this and on instinct they stay away from each other. This is one of the oddest things I've ever heard about. We've certainly never come across anything similar.&quot;

The best guess is that the flock was simply startled and flew into the ground at speed.</description>

An Italian man who argued with his son over Sony PlayStation tactics was recovering in hospital on Monday after the teenager stabbed him in the neck with a 15-inch (40 cm) kitchen knife, police and hospital officials said The man, identified as Fabrizio R., suffered a deep cut to the throat after his 16-year-old son, Mario, attacked him during an argument on Sunday over the soccer video game FIFA 2009.
Police said the argument broke out when the 46-year-old storekeeper offered his son advice on tactics to improve his play, and then turned the television off in response to his son's behaviour.
Fetching a knife from the kitchen, Mario stabbed his father in the neck before returning to clean the weapon at the kitchen sink in front of his mother and leaving it to dry on the draining-board. Forty-six year-old housewife Monica B,. told Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera that she had no idea what had happened until her husband stumbled into the room, clutching his throat.
&quot;I saw Mario come back into the room, he seemed calm, he went to the sink and I noticed him washing a knife,&quot; Monica told the newspaper. &quot;Then my husband came into the room with a hand round his neck, dripping blood.&quot;
The teenager shut himself in his bedroom after the attack and made no attempt to resist arrest, police said.
The game had been given to Mario a few days earlier, as a birthday present.
&quot;Mario is obsessed. He's forever playing on his PlayStation, and we bought him FIFA 2009 because we didn't want him playing violent games,&quot; his mother told Il Corriere.

      <title>British computer programmer Peter Moore </title>

      <description>By Mohammed Abbas and Adrian Croft

BAGHDAD December 30 - British computer programmer Peter Moore was released on Wednesday, two and a half years after being taken hostage by militants in Baghdad, officials said.

&quot;He is alive and in good health,&quot; Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said. Moore was handed to Iraqi authorities and then to the British embassy.

Moore, who was working on contract in Baghdad, was captured with four of his bodyguards from Iraq's Finance Ministry in 2007 at the height of sectarian bloodshed that killed tens of thousands after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The bodies of three of the bodyguards have since been handed to British authorities. The fate of the fourth, Alan McMenemy, is unconfirmed. British officials believe he is dead.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband called on the hostage takers to &quot;return Alan's body as soon as possible&quot;.

It has been one of the longest hostage crises involving Britons since several were held captive in Lebanon in the 1980s.

Moore's stepmother Pauline Sweeney said Moore had told her he did not know why his captors had released him. &quot;He said when they came in to him this morning he thought he was going out to a bullet in his head,&quot; she told the BBC.

BRITAIN DENIES CONCESSIONS

British officials have in the past said they believed a Shi'ite militant group called Asaib al-Haq, or Leagues of Righteousness, may have been behind the kidnapping.

Dabbagh said Iraq had not been involved in talks to secure Moore's release, but said that a suspected militant, Qais al-Khazali, who is believed to be a senior Asaib al-Haq member, had been transferred on Wednesday from U.S. custody in Iraq to Iraqi authorities.

&quot;Qais al-Khazali and other suspects formerly in U.S. custody have been handed over to the Iraqi government. Any suspects without evidence for a prosecution will be released,&quot; he said.

Khazali's brother was released from U.S. then Iraqi custody in June. The Iraqi government denied any connection with the British hostage issue, saying that the prisoner release was part of reconciliation efforts after years of bloodshed in Iraq.

Miliband said there had been &quot;no substantive concessions&quot; to the hostage-takers and that it was the Iraqi government's steps towards national reconciliation that had laid the foundations for progress in the case.

He declined to comment when asked if British officials had talked directly to the hostage-takers.

Britain's Foreign Office has faced criticism over its handling of the case and its attempts early on to discourage media reporting of the kidnappings.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who spoke to Moore by telephone, said he was hugely relieved to know he would be reunited with his family.

&quot;They have faced a terrible ordeal, and I know that the whole nation will share their joy that he is coming home,&quot; he said in a statement.

Moore's father Graeme, 60, who has said he felt the Foreign Office had been &quot;obstructive&quot; in the effort to secure his son's release, said he was &quot;over the moon&quot; on Wednesday.

&quot;When I heard the news I about went through the roof with joy,&quot; he was quoted as saying on the website of the Leicester Mercury newspaper. &quot;It's been such a long haul.&quot;

&quot;I know that there have been one or two people working in the background to get Peter released,&quot; he said.

After the Britons were seized, several videos of Moore in captivity emerged. In one video, aired in February 2008 by Dubai-based Al Arabiya television, Moore called on Brown to release nine Iraqis in return for the hostages' freedom.
