Canada bashed by China, Cuba, Pakistan, Russia, Iran, North Korea, at UN rights

Canadian FM Lawrence Cannon at UN

UN Rights Watch: April 26, 2013

GENEVA, April 26, 2013 - Today's UN quadrennial review of Canada's human rights record quickly turned into a spectacle of hypocrisy and farce when the North Korean regime of Kim Jong-un took the floor to accuse the country of "torture and other ill-treatment," China, Cuba and Pakistan bewailed Canada's "racism," and Russia deplored "torture and cruelty against peaceful protestors." (See full quotes below).

Human rights groups said the outbursts harmed the credibility of the UN.

"The UN squandered a golden opportunity to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in Canada," said Hillel Neuer, a Canadian-born lawyer who directs the non-governmental human rights organization UN Watch.

"The continued subversion of the UN human rights system-whereby thugs, murderers and rapists purport to judge the human rights record of a liberal democracy-undermines the founding principles and credibility of the United Nations," said Neuer.

"It's the foxes guarding the chickens, with the world's worst tyrannies abusing a legitimate process to satisfy narrow-minded political agendas, and to attack a leading Western democracy in order to deflect attention from their own sordid practices."

Neuer commended the minority of democracies who engaged constructively by making genuine recommendations for concrete improvements.

Quotes from today's UN Human Rights Council Review of Canada
Iran: We are "concerned on violations of human rights by Canadian government... particularly with regard to child sexual exploitation and trafficking, the right to food, discriminatory law and regulation against indigenous people and minority groups including Muslim and African communities."

China: "We are concerned by the wide-spread racial discrimination in Canada."

Cuba: There is "racism and xenophobia" in Canada.

North Korea: "We have serious concerns about continued violation of the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, torture and other ill-treatment, racism and xenophobia."

Egypt: "We are alarmed by several instances of racial profiling in law-enforcement action and racial discrimination in employment."

Pakistan: "The increased poverty and unemployment rate among immigrant communities is a manifestation of racial discrimination."

Russia: "Human rights defenders are alarmed by police actions of torture and cruelty against peaceful demonstrators."

UN Watch is a Geneva-based human rights organization founded in 1993 to monitor UN compliance with the principles of its Charter. It is accredited as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and as an Associate NGO to the UN Department of Public Information (DPI).

Sexual assaults in the US military are a growing epidemic across the services and thousands of victims are still unwilling to come forward despite a slew of new oversight and assistance programs, according to a new Pentagon report. Troubling new numbers estimate that up to 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year, according to survey results released on Tuesday. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports from Washington.

@StonePony, how do you defend this, I thought you said rapes were reported as soon as it happened in your country?

SYDNEY (AFP) - A South Korean spy ring has been uncovered in Australia trying to cultivate public servants to obtain trade secrets, a report said Thursday, but officials insisted relations with Seoul remained robust.

The Sydney Morning Herald said previously suppressed information revealed that South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) had sought "to obtain sensitive information" on trade negotiations between Canberra and Seoul.

It reported that the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) alleged that a senior Australian agricultural trade specialist was involved in "foreign interference" by the Korean spies and had been "successfully cultivated".

Israeli, Pakistani, American and Chinese Scientists twist light to send data

A multi-national team led by USC with researchers hailing from the U.S., China, Pakistan and Israel has developed a system of transmitting data using twisted beams of light at ultra-high speeds - up to 2.56 terabits per second. To put that in perspective, broadband cable (which you probably used to download this) supports up to about 30 megabits per second. The twisted-light system transmits more than 85,000 times more data per second. Their work might be used to build high-speed satellite communication links, short free-space terrestrial links, or potentially be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers. "You're able to do things with light that you can't do with electricity," said Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the corresponding author of an article about the research that was published in Nature Photonics on June 24. "That's the beauty of light; it's a bunch of photons that can be manipulated in many different ways at very high speed." Willner and his colleagues used beam-twisting "phase holograms" to manipulate eight beams of light so that each one twisted in a DNA-like helical shape as it propagated in free space. Each of the beams had its own individual twist and can be encoded with "1" and "0" data bits, making each an independent data stream - much like separate channels on your radio. Their demonstration transmitted the data over open space in a lab, attempting to simulate the sort of communications that might occur between satellites in space. Among the next steps for the research field will be to advance how it could be adapted for use in fiber optics, like those frequently used to transmit data over the Internet. The team's work builds on research done by Leslie Allen, Anton Zeilinger, Miles Padgett and their colleagues at several European universities. "We didn't invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second," Willner said. His team included Jian Wang, Jeng-Yuan Yang, Irfan M. Fazal, Nisar Ahmed, Yan Yan, Hao Huang, Yongxiong Ren and Yang Yue from USC; Samuel Dolinar from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Moshe Tur from Tel Aviv University. Wang, the lead author, left USC after completing this research and is now a professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

Prophet Muhammads (Pbuh) Companion's Grave Exhumed in Syria

Reports are said that the grave of Hujr ibn Adi was exhumed in the Damascus suburb of Adra, and took his remains to an unknown location.

Whether this was done by the FSA or Syrian Army is unknown. FSA have Islam ideology, so it would be rare if they had done it. The Syrian Army may be putting the blame on the FSA.
Hujr - a close companion of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and a staunch supporter of the first Shia Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (PBUH) - led the army of Muslims to victory in several crucial battles.

He and his sons finally fell victim to their loyalty Imam Ali (PBUH) and were murdered on the orders of the Umayyad Caliph Muawiyah in the year 660 CE.

Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the chaos.

The Syrian government says that the violence is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the insurgents are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the armed groups.

In addition, several international human rights organizations have accused the militants fighting the Syrian government of committing war crimes.

Afghan official: General Kayani used 'threatening language' in Brussels

KABUL (PAN): Pakistan's army chief, Gen. Pervez Kayani, used "threatening language" during his talks with President Hamid Karzai in Brussels last week, a senior official alleged on Monday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who hosted the talks, said they had a very extensive and a very productive and constructive dialogue. "But we have all agreed that results are what will tell the story, not statements at a press conference," Kerry told reporters after the talks.

Kayani warned the war season in Afghanistan was about to begin, said the Afghan official, who declined to be identified. "By referring to the Taliban spring offensive, Kayani wanted to mount pressure on Karzai," he added.

"During the meeting, aimed at defusing bilateral tension, Gen. Kayani's attitude was palpably aggressive," said the official, who also attended the Brussels talks.

"We have long been feeling the US and Pakistan are promoting the same agenda in Afghanistan," he remarked, saying Islamabad did not want a strong government in Kabul and the US sought to use a weak Afghan administration to protect its own interests in the region.

The Taliban have announced the launch of their spring offensive, signalling plans to step up attacks across the nation. The rebels vowed on Saturday "every possible tactic will be utilised in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors," including suicide attacks on military bases and diplomatic areas.

In the Belgian capital on Wednesday, Kerry hosted the meeting between Karzai and Kayani and senior Foreign Secretary Jalil Jilani to calm tensions over border disputes and the stalled peace process.

Kabul has grown increasingly frustrated with Islamabad over efforts to pursue a peace process involving the Taliban. Kabul suggests Islamabad is intent on keeping Afghanistan unstable until foreign combat forces leave at the end of 2014.

The meeting followed weeks of tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan over their 2,600-km border and stalled peace efforts.

Afghan officials allege the Pakistan military continues to shell Afghan villages in eastern parts and had recently constructed new installations along the shared frontier by acting unilaterally.

QUETTA:

If you ever wanted a greenhouse that can literally run on remote control, then you need to talk to Waleed Bashir.

Hailing from Khuzdar, this 15 year old Pakistani recently bagged the Grand Winner position, along with a gold medal, at the International Infomatrix Asia Computer Competition, held between April 18 and 21 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Infomatrix is an annual international computer project competition which aims at bringing together computer science students from across Asia. Although the Infomatrix competitions have been held since 2003, this was the first International Computer Project Olympiad.

This means that Bashir beat out competitors and projects from over 20 countries. Participating nations included Russia, India, Bangladesh, Georgia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Kyrghzstan, Azerbaijan, and Kenya, and judges had to choose between hundreds of projects. They chose Bashir's 'Green Automation' project .

Bashir, a ninth grader at the Quetta chapter of Pakturk International Schools & Colleges, designed an automation system that illustrates how to control a greenhouse with only a computer and an internet connection. With heat, water level, humidity and other factors controlled through strategically installed sensors, there is virtually no need for human attendants,.

That's not all; the energy required for the functioning of the system is provided by movable solar panels that follow the position of the sun for the best possible energy recovery.

"The honor and the pride belong to my country, Pakistan. They belong to my school and teacher, and to my parents," he said. "Carrying our flag on an international platform, with dignity and honour, was my dream," he said.

In addition to this, students from Pakturk schools across the country hold countless awards. Through many international competitions held in 2012, the Quetta chapter of the same institution won a gold medal in Turkmenistan and a silver medal in Turkey.
