Female Marine Poolee Raises Bar for Success

Starting in January 2014, female Marines will be required to perform the same minimum of three pull-ups as required for male Marines. This new standard for female Marines does not concern poolee Paige C. Colburn of Monroe, N.C., because she is already performing nine dead-hang pull ups.Colburn, who joined the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program on Jan. 22, departed for recruit training on April 8. She is well aware of the new standard, but she plans to show others females are more than capable of meeting and exceeding the new standard.

"I am able to show what I have worked so hard for," Colburn said, referring to her progression from two pull ups when she joined the DEP. "I never thought I would do nine pull ups. Now my goal is to reach 10."

Colburn's recruiter, Sgt. Christopher A. Moberg, of Recruiting Substation Monroe, Recruiting Station Columbia, said accountability is crucial in preparing young enlistees for the rigors associated with recruit training. The rotary-wing aircraft mechanic and former CH-46 crew chief said he and his fellow Marines expect their poolees to give 100 percent effort throughout their time in the DEP. This means poolees attending physical training sessions held every week, to include monthly pool functions.

Colburn is an example of a poolee who exceeded Moberg's expectations. She not only attended every possible training event, which often included working out six days a week with a full-time job, but she also served as a leader among fellow poolees with less than three months in the program.

"She tends to downplay her own abilities, but she becomes unstoppable once she overcomes that," Moberg said. "A lot of people follow her. When someone falls out of a run, we don't have to tell her to go back to get that person. She doesn't quit, and she's not selfish at all. She leads by example."He said he and his fellow recruiters take an invested interest in each poolee's development in the program. They want to ensure every poolee is mentally, morally and physically prepared for recruit training. Their training progression ensures poolees like Colburn are able to exceed standards. They also encourage poolees to take on leadership roles while in the DEP. This includes leading physical training sessions with the guidance and mentorship of their recruiters. This method draws out the leadership potential within each enlistee.

Colburn demonstrated her abilities during RS Columbia's annual Female Pool Function held on Feb. 23, which evaluated each female enlistee's ability to perform under intense stress. Drill instructors from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., attend the event each year to create an atmosphere similar to recruit training. During the event, drill instructors demand speed, volume, and intensity from poolees.

This year's event served as an opportunity to test each female poolee's ability to perform pull-ups. Colburn performed seven deadhang pull-ups during the event, two less than her current max.

"I was nervous because I did not know what to expect," Colburn said. "Everyone hears about drill instructors and sees them in YouTube videos, but it's difficult to understand without experiencing it firsthand. But weirdly enough, I wasn't scared. I knew I had to keep a straight face, but I was smiling on the inside. It was everything I hoped it would be."

Sgt. Alejandra Hernandez, a drill instructor with Company N, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, led the event and took the opportunity to inform the female enlistees about the future challenges they have to expect in recruit training.

The Chicago native, who has more than two years of experience as a drill instructor, said the Marine Corps is implementing more physical training focused on upper-body strength. She identified several activities, including the push press and clean press, in an effort to provide poolees with an idea of what to expect and how they can best prepare for the challenges to come.

"There are a lot of changes coming," Hernandez said. "We will be conducting more combat conditioning. Recruits have to start preparing themselves before they ship to recruit training or else they will struggle even more."

Hernandez, who will serve as a senior drill instructor with her next platoon, said the majority of recruits in her previous platoon could not perform any dead-hang pull ups upon arrival to recruit training. The majority of those recruits were able to perform an average of three pull ups upon graduation.

She used Colburn as an example of a recruit who will not only be successful in meeting the physical demands of recruit training, but also as a recruit who will be able to take on leadership roles, such as that of a guide or squad leader.

"I will be looking for recruits who can do it," Hernandez said, noting the ability to perform above the physical fitness standard. "I will be looking for her to motivate other recruits. She could motivate recruits and help them to do more pull ups."

Colburn said she lives to help others. She believes her experience in the DEP has helped her to realize her calling, and she has met every opportunity to help with enthusiasm and determination.

"I want to help others, to walk, to run, to lift, whatever the case may be," Colburn said. "It's all about being a leader in any way, shape, or form."

Israel: S-300 Missiles Moving to Syria

Source: http://syriareport.net/israel-s-300-missiles-moving-to-syria/
Israel's Air Force Commander Major General Amir Eshel said today that S-300 advanced missile defense system will soon arrive in Syria.

The S-300 systems have been modernized repeatedly to remain state-of-the-art airplane- and rocket-destruction machines. The S-300PMU2 Favorit can launch six missiles at once, each capable of destroying aircraft flying at several times the maximum speed of the F-16 and F-22 fighter jets - the staples of the Israeli and US air forces, respectively - as well as intercepting ballistic targets.

Speaking at a convention in Herzliya, Eshel added "there is a clear understanding that such capabilities will produce confidence and aggressive behavior."

"Aerial superiority is a condition to win and win quickly, and is of great strategic importance. The other side understands that well, which is why Assad, with his low budget, has invested billions into purchasing antiaircraft missiles."

"It's not just our problem. The challenge that is developing in the north did not start yesterday and there isn't a challenge that has no solution," the air force chief noted, adding that Syria could collapse soon and different forces could get hold of Assad's armory.

"This does not mean we will act, but it means we must be ready with our planes and missile defense systems. No one is going to tell us 'take two weeks to prepare for the war.' We will have to be ready for confrontations in Gaza and Lebanon, including long-range ones. Failure to prepare for this would mean a failure to learn the lessons of the Yom Kippur War."

IDF Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Benny Gantz added: "In light of the region's instability, the military faces a real scenario of a confrontation on multiple fronts, and is in a new resource reality which could change it completely."

The revelations come after an IDF vehicle was destroyed by Syrian forces in the Golan Heights.

Solar Impulse - Solar plane aims for new distance record

SOLAR Impulse, the first aircraft that can fly day and night fuelled entirely by energy from the sun, has embarked on the second leg of its historic journey across the American continent.

The solar-powered aeroplane departed at 2147 AEST on Wednesday from an airport in Phoenix, Arizona en route to Dallas, Texas, a trip of about 1300 kilometres, in a bid to set a new world distance record in solar aviation.

The first leg of Solar Impulse's travel took place on May 3, when Swiss aviator Bertrand Piccard flew the aircraft from the San Francisco area to Phoenix.

On Wednesday, Swiss fellow adventurer Andre Borschberg was at the controls flying the craft to Dallas.

The previous distance record, which is already held by Solar Impulse, was one year ago on a 1116 kilometre flight from Switzerland to Spain.

The US crossing, taking place in a series of stopovers, is being billed as the plane's first cross-continent flight.

On the first phase of the continental crossing the plane - which has a slim body and four electric engines attached to enormous wings - flew quietly at an average speed of about 30 miles (49 kilometres) per hour.

Energy provided by 12,000 solar cells powered the plane's propellers.

The project aims to showcase what can be accomplished without fossil fuels, and has set its "ultimate goal" as an around-the-world flight in 2015.

German Intelligence Sees Assad Regaining Hold

Not even a year ago, German intelligence predicted Syrian autocrat Bashar Assad's regime would soon collapse. Now, the agency instead believes the rebels are in trouble. Government troops are set to make significant advances, it predicts.

Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), has fundamentally changed its view of the ongoing civil war in Syria.

BND now believes the Syrian military of autocrat Bashar Assad is more stable than it has been in a long time and is capable of undertaking successful operations against rebel units at will. BND head Gerhard Schindler informed select politicians of the agency's new assessment in a secret meeting.

It is a notable about-face. As recently as last summer, Schindler reported to government officials and parliamentarians that he felt the Assad regime would collapse early in 2013. He repeated the view in interviews with the media.

At the time, the BND pointed to the Syrian military's precarious supply situation and large numbers of desertions that included members of the officer core. German intelligence spoke of the "end phase of the regime."

Since then, however, the situation has changed dramatically, the BND believes. Schindler used graphics and maps to demonstrate that Assad's troops once again possess effective supply lines to ensure sufficient quantities of weapons and other materiel. Fuel supplies for tanks and military aircraft, which had proved troublesome, are once again available, Schindler reported. The new situation allows Assad's troops to combat spontaneous rebel attacks and even retake positions that were previously lost. The BND does not believe that Assad's military is strong enough to defeat the rebels, but it can do enough to improve its position in the current stalemate.

Severing Rebel Supply Lines

The assessment appears to be consistent with recent reports from Syria, where government troops have been able to regain the upper hand in the region stretching from Damascus to Homs, including coastal areas near Homs. Furthermore, fighters loyal to Assad have expelled rebel fighters from several districts on the edge of Damascus and cut off their supply lines to the south. Currently, the regime is in the process of severing rebel supply lines to the west.

Meanwhile, the BND believes that rebel forces, which include several groups of Islamist fighters with ties to al-Qaida, are facing extreme difficulties. Schindler reported that different rebel groups are fighting with each other to attain supremacy in individual regions. Furthermore, regime troops have managed to cut supply lines for weapons and evacuation routes for wounded fighters. Each new battle weakens the militias further, the BND chief said.

Should the conflict continue as it has in recent weeks, says Schindler, government troops could retake the entire southern half of the country by the end of 2013. That would leave only the north for insurgent fighters, where Kurdish rebels have tight control over their areas.

Lowering Expectations

Schindler's report on the state of the rebel groups allows little room for hope that serious talks between the insurgents and the Assad regime will take place soon. The BND says there is no functional chain of command between opposition leaders abroad and the militias inside of Syria. The fighters on the ground simply don't recognize the political leadership, says the BND.

The United Nations is currently doing all it can to encourage both sides to engage in peace talks in Geneva, though no date has been set. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is once again travelling to the Middle East on Wednesday to plan for such negotiations.

At a meeting of the "Friends of Syria" in the Jordanian capital of Amman, Westerwelle is set to meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry among others. But over the weekend, he sought to lower expectations, saying that it isn't clear yet whether the Assad regime is even prepared to engage in talks.
