Turning to me, he said: "It's a joke, isn't it? I worked for almost 50 years and all I get is a small state pension. So why do we owe a living to all these people who have nothing to do with our country?" That question would be echoed by millions of people who are fed up with being told that they have to take responsibility for an unceasing influx of foreigners to Britain. The forces of mass immigration and European integration have created a profound unfairness in our society. Through the benefits system, the NHS, schools, transport and housing, British citizens are required to support vast numbers of new arrivals who by definition have given little or nothing to our nation. Such a process is not only unaffordable but it also makes a mockery of basic justice. The social contract, by which we used to be governed, was based on the idea that help from the state was provided in return for past contributions or service. Promoting personal responsibility and social solidarity, it was never meant to be a system that handed out something for nothing. But that is exactly what it does today as our borders and national identity are systematically demolished. Tragically this problem is certain to worsen in the near future thanks to the European Union's determination to impose its will on our country. As this paper revealed on Saturday, the EU Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Lazlo Andor, a Left-wing Hungarian economist, wants to remove all restrictions for EU migrants on access to labour markets and benefits systems. In Commissioner Andor's brave new world of absolute free movement, the concepts of nationality and kinship will completely disappear. British taxpayers will owe the same obligations to someone from Budapest as they do to someone from Bolton. No discrimination against Europeans will be tolerated. The British Government will be required to inform foreign nationals fully of their rights to claim welfare, while it will also become easier for pressure groups to launch legal actions if they think any migrants have been victimised. Commissioner Andor's plan shows how badly our independence and democracy have been damaged by the EU. Britain once ruled the greatest empire the world has ever seen, yet we are turning into a subjugated province of the Brussels empire. It is nauseating that we should now be told how to run our labour market by an unaccountable, unelected academic who graduated from Karl Marx university in Budapest, runs an obscure Left-wing magazine and is a member of the economic board of the Hungarian Socialist Party. Rules about benefits and jobs should be decided by our Parliament, not by the EU's self-serving bureaucracy. Yet it is precisely because of its hatred for the concept of democratic sovereignty that the EU so strongly favours the unrestricted movement of people around Europe. Uncontrolled immigration is the ideal vehicle for destroying nationhood and patriotic allegiances while at the same time advancing the idea of European citizenship in a new federal superstate. Unrestricted immigration is bad enough now but it will become even more serious next year once people from Bulgaria and Romania are allowed to settle without restraint. A survey by BBC Newsnight last week showed that around 8 per cent of Romanians and almost 14 per cent of Bulgarians want to come here, a finding that implies the arrival of 2.6 million people from these two countries. That would be an utter disaster for Britain, completely wiping out any recent progress the coalition has made in the reduction of unemployment and the reform of the benefits system. The cheerleaders for immigration, like Commissioner Andor, say that this is scaremongering. In their narrative, migrants always boost national economies because they come to work, not to claim benefits. But such assertions are hollow propaganda. The reality is that unrestricted immigration is highly damaging to the economy. It drives down wages, lowers living standards, places an intolerable strain on the civic infrastructure and puts millions of indigenous workers on the scrapheap. Just as importantly, it is a pernicious myth that all migrants are hard-working. In fact, people from migrant communities are on average more likely to be unemployed than Britons. Only 29 per cent of Somalis and 46 per cent of Bangladeshis are economically active. In total last year at least 370,000 foreign nationals were on out-of-work benefits, costing more than lb2billion. Around 10 per cent of the entire social housing stock goes to foreigners, with the proportion in London rising to 20 per cent. The belief that all Eastern Europeans fulfil the stereotype of the hard-working Pole is just as fallacious. One in three of all Big Issue sellers, for instance, is estimated to be Romanian. Ministers have talked about cracking down on benefits for EU migrants. But such language will mean nothing while zealots such as Commissioner Andor remain in charge. Now the teenaged grandson of Jayapala Shaiya, Tirlochanpala Shahiya took the reins of the death struggle against the Muslims in to his hands. He was then just a teenager at seventeen years of age when the ascended the once glorious throne of the Shahiyas. The Shahiya empire which had once stretched from the rivers Yamuna to the Kubha (Kabul), was now a shadow of its former glory. The first move Tirlochanpala did was to shift the capital from Lahore to Kangra in today's Himachal Pradesh. Kangra was in a relatively fortified position, from where he tried to reorganize the defense of his vastly reduced domains. The Shahiya empire which stretched from Herat to Hardwar, was now pushed to one fifth its size and its western border which was once at Herat during the reign of Jayapala Shahiya was now pushed about a thousand miles east at Kalka in the Shivalik Hills which were the foothills of the Himalayas. The Shahiya domains had now shrunk and did not occupy a position to block the further advance of the Muslims into the Gangetc plains - the Indian heartland. But he followed the valiant example of his father and grandfather and allied himself with the kings of Kashyapmeru (Kashmir) and Tibet, to eject the Muslims from Punjab and Upaganasthan (Afghanistan). Sabuktagin's son Mahmud Ghazni, wanted to nip this effort in the bud. He again made use of the patented Muslim mechanism of subterfuge. He sent a group of his soldiers dressed up as Hindu mendicants to meet Tirlochanpala. These mendicants went to Kangra and sent in a message that they come from Kubha (Kabul) and bring a message to their king whose ancestors originally ruled Kabul. With this trick, they gained entry into Tirlochanpala's headquarters at the fortress of Kangra. Once in his presence, the mendicants surrounded the unsuspecting young prince and sliced his neck and made off with his severed head, leaving a note beside his headless body that Islam will finally overcome anyone who decided to block the path of Allah's soldiers. A few days later a Muslim army arrived at the Kangra valley, stormed the fort of Kangra, and sacked it to srip it off the opulent riches that it held from the once vast Shahiya empire. This happened in the year 1020 C.E. The downfall of the Shahiya empire was so complete within forty years spanning a struggle over three generations that a few centuries later people even doubted if the Shahiyas (Hindu-Shahis) ever existed. Thus the memory of a dynasty that had held guard at the North West frontier of India since the days of the Kushanas in the 3rd century C.E. disappeared into the sands of time. The only reminder today are the ruins of the fortress of Kangra around which the gold and silver coins artfully minted by the Shahiyas are still to be found. The surviving remnants of the once formidable Shahiya army, became leaderless and demoralized. They migrated deep into the Himalayas and settled down as goat-herds known today as Gaddis. These Gaddis follow this profession to this day and they still inhabit the Himalayas coming down to the Shivalik foothills and the plains of Punjab in the winter to graze their cattle. Thus with Tirlochapala's death, the last scion of the Hindu dynasty that ruled Afghanistan and Punjab passed away. The next Hindu (Sikh) king of Punjab and Afghanistan was to be Maharaja Ranjit Singh who ascended the throne after a gap of eight hundred years in the 18th century. The interregnum was to be the dark interlude of Muslim tyranny, during which the majority of the Hindus of Afghanistan, Paktoonistan and West Punjab were converted to Islam at the pain of death. The plunder of Somanath by Mahmud Ghaznavi The defeat of the Shahiyas opened the Indian heartland to these heartless invaders and Mahmud of Ghazni, repeatedly attacked India. His raids for plundering and destroying Hindu shrines at Somnath, Palitana, Thanesar (Staneshwara), Mathura, Kannauj, Khajuraho regularly every year are still recollects with dread. His aim initially was limited to collecting a large booty every time as also take many Hindu captives who were sold into slavery in the bazaars of Baghdad and other Muslim cities. His raid on the famous Hindu shrine of Somnath located at Prabhash Patan in Gujarat is seared in Hindu memory till today. The many Hindu captives that he took from were transported on foot across the Western ranges of the Himalayas. Many Hindu captives could not face up to the merciless treatment of their cruel captors, and died in large numbers along the way. These deaths of the Hindus is remembered in the name which the Muslim gave to the Western Himalayas as "Hindu Kush", which means the Killer of Hindus (Kush means 'to kill' in Persian) How the Hindus inflicted the first major and decisive defeat on Muslims at the battle of Baharaich in 1033 The fact that in spite of the subterfuge that the Muslims used, the Hindus did register one spectacular victory over the Muslims in 1033 at Baharaich in today's Uttar Pradesh. The invader was Mahumd Ghazni's son, Masud Ghazni, who following his father's footsteps invaded India with a large army. The difference now was that he did not intend limiting himself to looting as his father had done, but planned a permanent occupation of the entire country. With this aim in mind, he penetrated deep in to the Ganges valley and established his camp at Baharaich in today's eastern Uttar Pradesh. From there he sent word to the surrounding Hindu kings to surrender and embrace Islam! As was their practice, before the beginning of hostilities, the Hindu kings also sent a messenger to Masud that this land being theirs, his troops should peacefully vacate it (as was done once again unsuccessfully by the Government of India before the inception of the 1999 Kargil war when Pakistan occupied Indian territory at Kargil Drass and Mushkoh sectors in Kashmir). But Masud sent a reply that all land belonged to Khuda (the Persianized version of Allah) and he could settle wherever he pleased. And that it was his holy duty to convert to Islam all those who did not recognize his Khuda and accept Islam. Consequently, Masud's huge army was besieged by the even greater Hindu army and no side gave the other any quarter. The Hindus, for once as an exception had learnt their lesson about Muslim treachery, after being victimized for four hundred years from 638 onwards. At the battle of Baharaich, gradually the Hindus began to decimate the Muslim army and as the hostilities progressed, Masud saw the unsuccessful end of his expedition. This bitter and bloody war was fought in the month of June 1033. In this ferocious and bloodied war, no side took any prisoners and it ended only with the slaughter of the entire invading Muslim army along with many martyrs from the defending Hindu army. What was exceptional during this war was that the folly of pardoning a defeated enemy, that was displayed by Prithviraj Chauhan 160 years later in 1191, was not to be seen. The Hindus seemed to have followed the tradition of their ancient king Ramchandra of Ayodhya when he defeated and killed Ravana and his entire army at the battle of Lanka. The battle of Baharaich ended on 14th June 1033. At the gory end, the entire invading army along with their commander lay dead. Not one enemy soldier was allowed to return. There still exists today near Baharaich the grave of the commander of the invader - Prince Ghazi Mian Masud. There he is hailed today by the local Muslims as a Ghazi and a Peer (a Muslim who is raised sainthood by being a killer of non-Muslims). And every year till this day an Urs (Muslim religious assemblage) is held in his memory. What is forgotten is the valiance of the Hindu soldiers who lost their lives in this major victory against the first Jihadi invasion in to the Indian heartland. Ironically and foolishly, some local Hindus too visit the invader's grave to ask for personal boons. After this decisive and ruthless Hindu victory, peace prevailed in the country for a century and a half; till the next (and now, unfortunately a successful) wave of Muslim invasions started under the leadership of Mohammed Ghori. This interlude of one hundred and fifty years from 1033 up to 1187, had made the Hindus forget the treacherous nature of the Muslims. Unlike the Zoroastrian Persians, the Hindus never surrendered to the Muslim tyrants. They waged a relentless and violent struggle against the Muslims. It was the valiant Hindu resistance that put paid all the savagery of the Muslims to convert all the Hindus to Islam at the pain of death. When fortune favored them, the Hindus returned in almost equal measure, the barbarism of the Muslims and struck fear in Muslim hearts for Hindu warriors like Krishna Deva Raya, Rani Durgavati, Shivaji, and Sikhs (who are a Hindu sect) like Guru Gobind Singh, Banda Singh Bahadur and many others. The reason why the Hindus survived thirteen centuries of savage Muslim tyranny was that they learnt that the art of survival in face of a Muslim attack was giving back almost as much as they got from the beastlike Muslims. We use the qualifier "almost" as the Hindus slaughtered the Muslims on the battlefield, but did not go to the extent of slaughtering Muslim civilians and giving them the choice of Hinduism or death, Hindus did not molest Muslim women en masse, neither did they destroy, en masse, all Mosques, nor did they build Hindus temples over them (the Babri Masjid-Ramjanabhomi struggle being a one off and very belated case). Never did the Hindus, after a victory, impose a penal tax like the jaziya on all Muslims and reduce the Muslims to such a state of servitude, that for Muslims dying would be more preferable than living under a tyrannous Hindu rule. There is no record of the defeated Muslims saving their skins by either jumping in to the common fire (as the Hindus did in Jauhar) to avoid converting to Hinduism. It was this valiant Hindu resistance that put paid all the savagery of the Muslims to convert all the Hindus to Islam at the pain of death. But otherwise the sordid tale of Muslim savagery was no less brutal from that in other parts of the world overrun by the Islamic Jihadis. Muslims invaded India only four years after they invaded Persia Very few know that while the Muslims invaded Persia in 634, they invaded Sindh in India on the orders of the gangster Umar (the Muslim Khalifa) in 638, just a gap of four years. But while Persia succumbed in seventeen years by 651, Muslims took seven hundred years to overrun India (today Sindh is a part of a Muslim country called Pakistan that was carved out of Hindu India in 1947). And even after that they could not rule India in peace. The Hindu resistance was not just fierce, but it kept increasing in ferocity till with the Marathas, the Hindus overtook the Muslims in their ferocity. It was this lesson which the Hindus learnt from the Muslims and applied against the Muslims, that led to the Hindu (Maratha) victories against the beast-like Muslims. It was the Marathas who presaged President Bush when he said "We will hunt down our enemies" The Marathas literally hunted down the Muslims. The only other case of a Muslim defeat in face of such tactics was in Ethiopia and Southern Sudan (Nubia) where the African Christians of Nubia used guerilla tactics against the Muslims to hunt them down and finally to defeat them. Foul Tactics used by the Muslims against Indians (Hindus) Although the Arab Muslims on the orders of the gangster Caliph Umar, attacked India in 638, they were repeatedly defeated by the Rajas of Makara (Makran) and Sindh. The Arab chroniclers then wrote derisive accounts of the reasons for their defeats at the hands of the Hindus by saying that the Hindus practice Voodoo and Black Magic and so bring Jinns and Shaitan to help them in war. Hence the Arabs cannot defeat them, the way the Arabs could easily defeat the Persians and the Byzantines. But the Hindus were tenacious fighters. We need only to remember how the Greeks under Alexander overcame the Persian Achemanian empire in a few years, after which they attacked India, but the Hindus contested the Greeks so fiercely and harassed the Greek army so much that inspite of the Greeks securing a costly victory in the battle along the river Hydaspes (Vitasta, today's Jhelum), the Greek troops mutinied and refused to advance further into India. How the Muslims blackmailed a guard to open the door of the fort of Debal The Muslims too had a tough job with the Hindus. After an unsuccessful campaign of more than eighty years from 638 C.E., the Muslims ultimately captured the Fort of Deval (Debal near modern Karachi) by deceit, by kidnapping the three children of the chief guardsman of the fort of Debal, beheading one and threatening to behead the other two. With this blackmail, they forced him to leave one of the secret trap doors open, after they had feigned retreat. Due to this betrayal, the Muslims could finally sink their ugly claws into India under their beast-like leader Mohammed-ibn-Qasim (Mohammed bin Kasim). The Hindus never forgot this treachery and eventually learnt from it . In this treacherous attack, the Muslims kidnapped two princesses of the King Dahirsen (Raja Dabir) of Debal. The leader of the Muslim brigands, Qasim and sent them as captives to the Khilafa (Caliph), as a gift with a message that they were royal virgins, meant to be ravished by his holiness (sic) the lecherous Caliph himself. But these princesses outsmarted the Caliph. The two princesses tore apart their hymen with their own hands and told the caliph that their modesty had already been violated by Qasim. The Caliph did not believe them, but when he saw for himself the ruptured hymens, he was convinced that Qasim had violated the modesty of the princesses and then sent them over to him. The thought that Qasim had fooled him so enraged the lecherous Caliph that he summoned Qasim to present himself at Baghdad. With Qasim in chains, the Caliph accused him of betrayal. Although Qasim pleaded his innocence, the Caliph, asked for Qasim to be locked in a barrel with nails stuck on the inside and had him rolled down a hill. Qasim died a cruel but a well deserved death. 'I am going to the Wedgwood factory.' Blank. 'You know? Wedgwood? Famous pottery?' Complete blank. Only when I produce a post-code, and we can tap it into a SatNav, does the Asian taxi-driver have any idea where we are going: and it is certainly not anywhere in the Britain of my boyhood.I grew up in the Potteries. When I was young, there were between 50,000 and 60,000 people employed in the industry. Today there are little more than 5,000. Only in recent times, after a gap of about 30 years, have I started to return there - and the place I find is no longer recognisable.It's not just that the buildings have been torn down - the whole way of life, the entire texture of the place has been gouged out. My family had a small business here from the late 18th century onwards, and my dad was a director of Wedgwoods. Pottery is, or was, the lifeblood of this region.When I was a schoolboy, it would have been absolutely inconceivable that someone earning a living in Stoke as a taxi-driver would not know the whereabouts of the most famous pottery factory in Britain. But this has happened to me about 20 times in the past couple of years, and it has left me with a feeling of absolute dislocation.At some deep, visceral level, this was my home - the place I came from. Where my grandfather and his grandfather and his grandfather before that all ran businesses. Where the same families, the same names, cropped up again and again, often intermarrying; where everyone knew one another.In the town of Fenton, where my father was born, in a 'big house' next to the 'works', the workers and their bosses lived cheek by jowl. This sort of situation must have been replicated in so many different towns of Britain, until the Seventies and Eighties. Then came the double whammy - the destruction of manufacturing industry, and the filling up of depressed regions of our former industrial base with immigrants who had no connection with them.Now, Stoke is a place where taxi drivers do not show any consciousness of it having been 'the Potteries'. They are strangers. But then so, too, in many ways, are the indigenous population.It is a worrying fracturing of society - and I believe the reasons for it can be found in the Census report this week which laid bare the true, staggering scale of immigration to Britain in recent years.I have seen the changes in London, where I have lived for 25 years, and which I have known all my life. London was always more 'exotic' than the provinces. You would hear the occasional foreign accent, or a foreign language being spoken on the bus.As I grew up into someone who liked trying to learn languages, I used to get on the bus and position myself near a foreign language-speaker to see if I could make out what they were saying.Now, it is rare to hear English spoken on any of the buses that I take regularly. And increasingly this impenetrable language barrier is becoming a problem in everyday life, because so many recent immigrants from Europe are working in shops and cafes across the country.A friend of mine went to a well-heeled London branch of Marks &amp; Spencer the other day, and at the hot food counter asked for a 'pasty', only to be met with a look of total incomprehension from two members of staff who worked there. They simply didn't know what he was talking about, and could only turn and point mutely at the menu on the wall. You'd think he was in Azerbaijan. London has always been culturally and linguistically mixed: that is part of what makes it such an exciting place to live. But the first wave of immigrants in my lifetime were either from English-speaking countries, such as India or Jamaica, or they came in such comparatively small numbers that they learned to speak English in order to survive. Now, it is possible to arrive in London and live entirely in your own language-world. Is it surprising that society is fragmentary, when countless thousands of our fellow-citizens cannot actually communicate with each other?There are now ten schools in England where no pupil speaks English as a first language. One of them, in Oldham, is a Church of England school, though there is not much chance of the pupils mastering the beautiful cadences of the King James Bible there! In some 600 English primary schools, English is the second language for over 70 per cent of the pupils.In other countries which have accepted huge numbers of immigrants, the teaching of the host-language has been seen as an absolute necessity. You can not become an Israeli, for example, without showing a knowledge of Hebrew. How else do societies hold together, other than by speaking the same language?As we begin to absorb the information from the 2011 Census, we have had to come to terms with its extraordinary statistics, such as the fact that more than a million schoolchildren in England and Wales belong to households where English is not spoken.The Census has confirmed what we all vaguely sensed - that the staggering increase in the number of immigrants in recent years has fundamentally changed the country in which most of us grew up, in many cases beyond recognition.When Idi Amin kicked out the Asians from Uganda in 1972, about 27,000 came to this country. It was a story at the time which gave rise to much passionate debate about the wisdom of allowing so many in at one leap. But since they had been given 90 days to leave their African home, there was no option, and since the majority were highly employable people - many of them professionals - there was in the event no difficulty about their finding a place in Britain.But the migration of the past 15 years has been on a totally different scale. Over four million immigrants have arrived in the past decade; 7.5 million people born abroad are now resident in Britain. In London, white Britons are now in the minority.And perhaps the most disturbing element of all is that there has been no major public debate about this. None at all. And any attempt to discuss the matter honestly has been censored either by the BBC or one group or another accusing people of racism.Ed Miliband, whose New Labour colleagues deliberately opened the floodgates to mass immigration, yesterday admitted some communities could not adapt to the bewildering increase in the number of immigrants.'The last Labour government made mistakes in this regard,' he said. He had planned to go even further in a speech on immigration he made in South London, but tellingly chose to drop the line 'we did too little to tackle the realities of segregation in communities that were struggling to cope'.Instead, he suggested that the statistics in the Census were a cause for celebration: 'We should celebrate multi-ethnic diverse Britain. We are stronger for it - and I love Britain for it.'How many among even Labour supporters, I wonder, entirely swallow the argument that such mass immigration strengthens us as a nation?Three years ago in London, there was a play at the National Theatre called England People Very Nice. It was considered highly controversial because it portrayed racial stereotypes and dealt with immigration.The director of the National, a nice, kind-hearted lefty called Sir Nicholas Hytner, felt that the Left had dominated theatre for too long, and he wanted to put on a Right-wing play. My wife and I hurried off eagerly to see it, but it was not a very good piece of drama. Set in a bar in the East End, the action took place over 300 years, beginning with the arrival of the Huguenot silk workers in 18th-century London, and concluding with some young Islamic terrorists.Very soon the play was being labelled racist. 'It leaves you with the sense that the Irish are all wife-beaters and the Bangladeshis are all jihadis,' said Rabina Khan, a novelist from Tower Hamlets in East London.It did not leave me with this sense at all. Far from being Right-wing, the play trotted out one of the cliches of modern liberal thought, that of equivalence.It made out that all immigration to Britain, from the arrival of Julius Caesar to the latest plane-load of Albanian criminals, is somehow the same, all livening up the dull, suburban British scene and making it throbbing and 'vibrant'.Everyone knows that no such equivalence exists. Yet the play spoke as if the Huguenot silk workers who arrived from France - not one of whom was in a position to claim benefits from the state - could be discussed in the same breath as the growing millions of people now living in Britain who were not born here.Whereas Huguenots arrived in their few thousands, this country's Bangladeshi community alone totals more than 200,000, while there are 482,000 of Pakistani origin, 694,000 of Indian origin as well, of course, as nearly 600,000 Poles and millions from other places.Another lie regularly rehashed by nearly all liberal commentators is that immigration is universally good for the economy, and that most of the millions who have come here in the past decade are stimulating growth and prosperity.In fact, a House of Lords report in 2008 concluded this was not the case, and only by the most tortuous mangling of figures could it be said to be true. Take the example of the Poles. We were excited when Polish plumbers, carpenters and craftsmen arrived. Our lavatories had never flushed so vigorously, nor had our shelves been less wobbly.We carefully overlooked some pretty obvious facts: many of the immigrant workers were black-marketeers working for cash, while they put British workers out of a job. And when they had a bit of success, rather than returning to Poland, they brought over their wives and children, who took advantage of our free state schools, maternity hospitals and over-stretched 'affordable' houses.Those immigrant farm workers from Eastern Europe accept the minimum wage or less, and only this week it was reported that this has led to a fall of on average 6.6 per cent in agricultural pay in Britain, compared with significant rises in agricultural pay in such countries as Belgium and Holland, which do not accept such workers.Worse, though, is the dismal effect that mass immigration has had upon our culture as a whole. The 2011 census said fewer than six in ten in this country now claim to be Christian. I am surprised it's so many.For in schools where 70 per cent of the children do not speak English as a first language, and where immigrant lobby groups are eager to take offence at their children being taught anything contrary to their creeds, teachers choose the easy way out. Nativity plays become celebrations of Rainbow Folk, multi-racial, multi-faith and multi-cultural - that is, of no culture at all. In Harrow, where only 7 per cent of the school population is Muslim, the council decided in in 2010 to serve only Halal meat for school dinners. As a result of multi-culturalism, we now have a generation of supposedly Christian children who do not know Away In A Manger, and who have no idea of why we celebrate the Feast of The Ascension or why we talk of Advent in the run-up to Christmas.The inevitable effect, of course, is the fragmenting of the country. An unspoken apartheid operates. The white working-class population of London's East End have moved out to Essex and Kent - enclaves which are far less socially varied than the British cities of yore. 'Don't get me wrong,' is how some of my working-class friends preface their explanation of why they'd rather live in some bleak bungalow in Canvey Island or Southend than stay in the East End, surrounded by speakers of Urdu, Polish and Somali. The middle classes, likewise have fled to their own enclaves - the Cotswolds, for instance, for the very rich, the Home Counties for commuters.Thus, much of central London is now inhabited on the one hand by relatively impoverished immigrant communities, and on the other by the very wealthy from Russia, Greece and the Middle East.Of course immigration has brought Britain benefits over the centuries, and it would plainly be impractical, as well as inhumane, to suggest that those who have come to live in Britain, quite legitimately, should be made to feel unwelcome here.That is not what I am saying. But the effect of the huge increase in immigration in the past decade or so has left millions of us feeling a little shell-shocked. We no longer recognise the country we grew up in. We are increasingly aware that a uniting British culture that evolved over centuries is fragmenting. It is not racist to suggest that our social infrastructure - our schools, hospitals and housing stock - cannot cope with such enormous numbers of migrants so quickly. The numbers of foreigners settling in this country must be reduced.And one thing which could and should be done immediately is for the Government to ban the use of any language other than English in schools. Until we all speak the same language, there is small hope that we could ever come together and cohere as the new society of the future.
