WWII vet gets 'Order of the Rising Sun' from Japan's ambassador

The government of Japan has bestowed one of that nation's highest honors on a Japanese-American, a former U.S. Soldier and World War II veteran, for his work furthering relationships between the Japanese and Americans.

During a ceremony, May 21, 2013, at the home of Kenichiro Sasae, the Japanese ambassador to the United States, Terry Shima was awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette" award. The award comes from both the prime minister and emperor of Japan.

Shima is a "Nisei," or second-generation Japanese-American. During World War II, he joined the 442nd Infantry Regiment in 1945 in Italy, where he was assigned to public relations. When the unit returned in July 1946, he continued to handle public relations for the veterans association in New York, in Washington, D.C., and in Honolulu. Following two years in the Army, he worked for the Foreign Service for 30 years.

Shima also served as the executive director of the Japanese-American Veterans Association, or JAVE, in 2004. He'd only been with the organization for three years. His work there furthered recognition of the contributions of Japanese-Americans in the U.S., helped strengthen relationships between Japanese-Americans and the people of Japan, and also ensured that Japanese-Americans remember how they were interred during World War II. Shima continues that work today, still with JAVE, where he serves as the chairman of its committee on outreach and education.

In the citation for the award, it is noted that Shima is "a citizen of the United States." Sasae drew attention to that phrase, saying it carried special significance.

"That phrase in the decoration, 'citizen of the United States of America' has special meaning to Shima-san and his generation. Citizens of the United States, this was the identity for those who lived each day loyal to these words, until his very loyalty was tested," Sasae said.

The ambassador said it was a test of loyalty that, during that time, many Japanese-Americans had been imprisoned as a result of the outbreak of war with Japan. Yet many "went directly from being imprisoned in an internment camp to fighting for their country that had imprisoned them," Sasae said.

"Fathers told sons to make them proud once again, and they did," Sasae said. "Eight hundred Nisei gave what the very best and most loyal citizens could give, their very lives. They died for those who were coming in the future, the children and the grandchildren."

He said that it is Shima who helps ensure those descendants remember what happened to their families during World War II.

"Shima-san, you have done your work well," the ambassador said.

After accepting the award, which included both a medal and a large certificate printed in Japanese, Shima addressed the audience which included many Japanese-Americans, including Japanese-American service members.

"I am deeply humbled to be selected to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette," Shima said. "I will accept it on behalf of the other volunteers and some 30,000 Japanese-Americans who served during World War II, and the 800 who were left behind on the battlefields of France and Italy and the Pacific."

He told those at the ambassador's residence that it is his work now, "in the trenches," to ensure that Japanese-Americans know about their history during World War II within the U.S., and to also further relations with Japan.

"Japanese-Americans are proud of their racial and cultural heritage, as we are proud to be Americans," he said. "When Americans questioned Japanese-American loyalty, Nisei volunteered to serve in combat to prove their loyalty. And President Truman affirmed it, on July 15, 1946, at the Ellipse. The president's affirmation resonated across the land."

Shima finished by thanking those involved, including the Japanese, for recognizing his contributions to relations between the two countries.

"Thank you again Mr. Ambassador for this high recognition, and congratulations to the post-World War II Japanese-Americans, who have competed with the best of the best to contribute to America's greatness, and also, God bless America for the U.S./Japan alliance," Shima said.

'Dog Father' Retires From Military Service

It is a retirement ceremony like many. The anthem plays over the loudspeaker. Soldiers render honors. A barking of orders, medals pinned and an old Soldier -- unleashed from military service -- begins a new chapter in life. However, the retirement ceremony held, Feb. 1, here on Conn Barracks was different than most. Soldiers and community members from Schweinfurt, Bamberg and Mannheim gathered to honor Lando F620, a military working dog who rose to the rank of sergeant first class and retired from the 94th Military Police Detachment.

"The average lifespan of Lando's breed is 15 years," said Capt. Dane M. Hiltner, commander of the 630th Military Police Company, during remarks delivered at the ceremony. Lando, a 12-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been in military service for the past eight years. "Can you imagine? As humans our average lifespan is maybe 80. So, can you imagine serving the Army for 40 years?"

Lando deployed four times in those eight years. At the ceremony he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for his service to the Army.

"He is the dog father. All the other dogs love him. They won't bark at him," said Staff Sgt. Richard McNulty of the 94th MPD, who has worked with dogs like Lando for four years.

Lando entered the military working dog program in December of 2003 at Lackland Air Force Base, where all military working dogs receive their initial training. He trained as a patrol explosive detection dog in 2005 and was then assigned to the 272nd Military Police Company in Schweinfurt, Germany. He continued his career with the 630th Military Company and finished under the 94th Military Police Detachment.

Lando deployed four times -- once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, twice for Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently in support of the Kosovo Force. He had 15 confirmed finds while deployed downrange.

"The biggest achievement that he has done is finding explosives downrange," said McNulty. "There is no way to calculate how he saved lives -- finding the explosives, finding the IEDs, getting them off the route the Soldiers were going."

Lando also provided force protection to the president and vice president of the United States and the secretary of state, said McNulty. But when he wasn't sniffing out bombs and protecting heads of state, Lando was protecting the Bamberg and Schweinfurt military communities working perimeter checks and gate guard.

Military working dogs spend countless hours with their handlers to hone the skills necessary to sniff out drugs or explosives. But now, Lando's golden years are in front of him as he transitions into retirement.

"He gets all excited," said Staff Sgt. Michael S. Bacon, about Lando's work ethic even today. Bacon is the kennel master for the 94th MPD. "He wants to do it even though his body can't really do it for him anymore. Mentally he is like 'let's go, let's do this.'"

One Bamberg family has now decided to adopt him.

At the Feb. 1 ceremony, Capt. Rory Thibault, his wife Johanna and their family received Lando's leash and a certificate of adoption formally certifying Lando's transition out of military service and into doggy retirement.

"When we saw a note on the Bamberg community page about a (military working dog) looking to retire we were intrigued," said Johanna Thibault. "An older and well-trained dog would be a great fit for us. After we met Lando we fell in love and realized he'd be a great fit for our family."

Pet owners can adopt military working dogs once the dogs are removed from service for reasons ranging from medical issues to their own disinterest in sniffing out explosives.

"They want to work," said McNulty about all military working dogs. "They have a drive to work. It takes them a little longer to go to a home and be a pet. Their job is to just be loyal to that family, not search for explosives, not to do bite work anymore. It takes them time to adjust to their new life."

Lando does not have any medical issues. But his new family should be warned.

"He sleeps on his back with his legs up in the air," said Staff Sgt. James A. Hall, the kennel noncommissioned officer in charge, who is familiar with Lando's antics. "It looks like he is playing dead."

Although the Bamberg and Schweinfurt communities will no longer be graced with the 'Dog Father,' his new family already has plans on how Lando will spend the rest of his dog days.

"It's very clear to us that Lando was well loved in the Schweinfurt and Bamberg kennels. He is a people-oriented dog, and we're making sure to include him in everything we do. Be it sitting and watching TV or walking to kindergarten, we're making sure Lando is there with us," said the Thibault family.

The tragic ending of a true friendship between a Muslim and a Jew

Bedouin Omar Walid lost his best friend Idan Sabri at Beersheba bank massacre, yet took bullets for others. Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovitch also paid Walid a visit at the hospital, saying that "he is a citizen of Israel who, I am told, also defended people with his body. His best friend was Idan. This is common destiny."

Bank gunman's sister: He was mentally damaged during his army time -

Omar Walid and Idan Sabri went to the Beersheba branch of Hapoalim Bank together, where the 22-year-old Sabri found his death at the hands of the shooter Itamar Alon along with three others. Walid, Sabri's best friend, from the Bedouin town of Rahat, was seriously injured and evacuated to hospital handcuffed.

Earliest reports from the scene were based on the assumption that the injured Bedouin was one of the aggressors rather than a victim.

Walid's condition has since stabilized, yet he remains unconscious and on life support in the intensive care unit of the Soroka Medical Center. The director of the trauma unit, Professor Gadi Shaked said that "he underwent a several hour-long surgery and continues to receive support." His condition is regarded as difficult as he is suffering from four gunshot wounds to the back and stomach.

"He went to help Idan," his brother said. "They've been friends for five or six years, worked together in Beersheba in all kinds of jobs such as gardening. I gather there was an argument with the killer at the bank. He probably spoke to Idan, then Omar intervened, and the shooting kicked off. Omar got a few bullets."

Remo Vaknin, who identified Walid as the man who was lay upon him and took the bullets intended for him, arrived at the hospital. "He saved my life," said Vaknin, who too was handcuffed in the midst of the event. Police explained that due to the severity of the incident an operational decision was made to handcuff all the people at the scene who were not identified.

Police said they escorted all handcuffed persons until their involvement in the case was ruled out beyond doubt.

Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovitch also paid Walid a visit at the hospital, saying that "he is a citizen of Israel who, I am told, also defended people with his body. His best friend was Idan. This is common destiny."

* Bank gunman's sister: 'things he experienced in the army led to deterioration' -

"The sorrow we feel for the victims' families is great. We are people of faith, and believe everything that happens is guided from above. But my heart is bleeding, and we are devastated over what the families are going through," said Kochava Orion, the sister of the man who shot four people dead and then killed himself at a bank in Beersheba on Monday.

Speaking to Ynet about her brother, Itamar Alon, Orion said "there are also many good things to say about him. He was a man who gave everything for the State of Israel, but things happened to him during his army service - they caused the (deterioration). Our family paid a heavy price, just as other families of injured soldiers have. Itamar was defined as a mentally damaged because of what he experienced then.

The sister added: "He came from a good family with eight children who all contribute - all of them gave their hearts and souls. There is a lawyer in the family; another one works in the medical field; no one is a parasite, no one is a burden.

"But I have been distanced from the family for many years; I haven't belonged for a long time; I do not live in Beersheba. I am a simple woman; far be it from me to provide answers to this affair," she said.

Alon had reportedly been turned down Monday morning by the bank when he tried to extend his credit line, because of a NIS 6,000 debt. At around noon he returned to the Hapoalim Bank branch, located on Beersheba's Yohana Jabotinsky Street, with his personal firearm and killed four people. He also took a bank employee hostage, but he released the woman about an hour into the incident and then killed himself.

Cunnecticut Gun Owners: What Second Amendment?

All this could have been prevented if they just passed a bill making it
illegal to kill your mother and steal her firearms and take those
firearms to a school and use them to shoot people, and have it
retroactively come into effect last year. Oh wait, all those things are
already illegal...

Good to see that the senator's main concern is making sure he gets the funding.
They're using the same anti-gun play book that was used here (Canada) in the late 80's early 90's.
Many gun laws are put in effect only to be taken to the Supreme Court,
where the laws get shot down buy way of Fifth Amendment Rights. I'm sure
this will be no different. Giving a U.S. citizen a prison term for
having a firearm is a violation of F A Rights. I will be watching to see
how this plays out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connecticut gun law: Breakdown of when new rules go into effect

HARTFORD - New gun controls in Connecticut may have set off
discussions by some manufacturers over whether or not to leave the state
and a myriad of questions from dealers, but for citizens interested in
buying guns going forward, the best way to approach the new rules is to
look at when they go into effect.

The revisions, adopted almost three months after lawmakers looked for
consensus in working groups and their leaders took weeks to negotiate
the terms, are touted as among the strongest in the nation. Connecticut
also has begun to address improvements in mental health services and
school security as part of the comprehensive law.

The bipartisan deal was the state's response to the slaughter of 20
first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in
Newtown Dec. 14 by lone gunman Adam Lanza, who used a Bushmaster AR-15
semiautomatic rifle to shoot 154 rounds in less than five minutes; the
victims each were shot between 3 and 11 times.

Both sides were passionate in their positions on gun control, with
opponents accusing lawmakers of going too far in regulating firearms and
not far enough in addressing mental health services; proponents
criticized the failure to ban possession of magazines over 10 rounds.

Everyone agreed on the necessity of implementing known strategies to
improve behavorial health and aligning insurance coverage, and some of
that is part the new law. A continuing review of mental health access is
ongoing, with a final report not due until the end of the year.

Adoption of the total package, however, with affirmative votes from both
Republicans and Democrats, is being held up as a model for Washington
to follow.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN: The state's ban on assault weapons, which covered
66 weapons as adopted in 1993, has been increased by at least 100 more
that now will meet the expanded definition of the military-style
firearm, that the industry refers to as sporting rifles.

The sale of AR-15s since the tragedy at Newtown increased dramatically
due to the anticipated rule changes and the fear that assault weapons
currently owned would be confiscated.

Legal owners can keep them in their homes and their businesses and they
can use them at the shooting range, but they can't be transported with
magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Under the changes, no one has to give up their assault weapons purchased
by April 3, but there are restrictions on where they can be used.

That means citizens who rushed out to continue to clear the shelves at
firearm dealers of any of the banned firearms on the morning of April 4,
before Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the bill at noon, are in possession
of a banned weapon which is subject to a class D felony with a
mandatory one-year minimum prison term.

The exemptions to the ban allow their sale and possession to the
Department of Corrections, the Department of Emergency Services and
Public Protection, police departments and state/national military or
naval forces for use in their official duties.

LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINE BAN: Magazines holding more than 10 rounds
cannot be sold, purchased or imported into Connecticut as the state
joins New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Colorado, California, Hawaii and
Washington, D.C. in limiting their size and use.

To reach bipartisan agreement among the leaders, the law does not ban
possession of magazines larger than 10 rounds, but, similar to the
banned assault weapons, they can only be possessed in a owner's home or
place of business and at a shooting range. When they are transported to
and from a shooting range, they cannot be loaded with more than 10
bullets.

The exemptions are the same as those for the banned assault weapons.

UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS: The sale of all firearms, including the
private sale or transfer of long guns (rifles and shotguns) requires the
buyer to pass a national criminal background check. Up to now, the
private sale of long guns was not regulated and 40 percent of firearms
sales across the country did not require a background check.

The seller of long guns, in addition to the background check, has to
document the transaction with the state Department of Emergency Services
and Public Protection which must authorize the sale; the gun cannot be
loaded when transferred.

AMMUNITION SALES: Sales of ammunition to anyone under the age of 18 are barred.

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2013

LONG GUN ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE : The minimum age for a long gun
eligibility certificate is 18, whereas the existing law sets a minimum
age of 21 for a handgun. The eligibility certificate provisions are
substantially the same as those for handgun eligibility certificates:
DESPP issues them ; the fee is $35 and the certificate is good for five
years; a background check is needed; applicants are ineligible after
felony convictions, certain misdemeanors or certain mental health
history.

MENTAL HEALTH AND ELIGIBILITY FOR GUN CREDENTIALS: Persons confined to a
psychiatric hospital by a probate court order within the preceding 60
months are ineligible for a gun permit or eligibility certificate. Under
current law, it is within 12 months of the order

AMMUNITION CERTIFICATE: Anyone 18 years of age and older can request an
ammunition certificate, which will require a national criminal history
check. The cost is $35 and it is in effect for five years. Applicants
are ineligible if guilty of any felony, certain misdeamonors or
involuntary psychiatric confinement. The certificate is not needed for
those holding a permit to carry a pistol, which covers about 200,000
individuals in Connecticut, a handgun eligibility certificate or a long
gun certificate.

RISK REDUCTION EARNED CREDITS AND PAROLE FOR VIOLENT OFFENDERS: The law
requires inmates convicted of violent crimes to continue to serve 85
percent of their sentences before being eligible for parole, regardless
of any credits they receive. As under current law, inmates convicted of
any crimes except the following can earn credits: murder, capital
felony, felony murder, arson murder, first-degree aggravated sexual
assault and home invasion.

BOARD OF FIREARM PERMIT EXAMINERS MEMBERSHIP: The law increases the
board membership from seven to nine, by adding one retired Superior
Court judge, appointed by the chief court administrator, and a
Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services nominee, appointed by
the governor. The law also allows the board to grant one continuance,
for good cause, to an official whose action on a gun permit or gun
eligibility certificate is being appealed.

APPROPRIATION: The law appropriates $1 million to DESPP to fund the statewide firearms trafficking force. (Can you say MRAP?)

EFFECTIVE OCT. 1, 2013

MENTAL HEALTH AND GUN PERMITS ELIGIBILITY: The bill makes ineligible any
person who voluntarily admitted himself or herself to a psychiatric
hospital, on or after Oct. 1, 2013. A person who has been so admitted
will not be able to receive a permit or eligibility certificate for 6
months thereafter, nor will they be eligible to possess any firearm for
those six months following their release from the hospital.

You are not ineligible if your admission is solely for drug or alcohol treatment.

The Department Mental Health and Addiction Services will be responsible
for maintaining information on voluntary admissions and make that
information available to the Department of Emergency Services and Public
Protection to carry out the new provisions on obtaining gun
credentials. DMHAS must start to maintain identifying information on
these individuals as of July 1, 2013.

ARMOR PIERCING AMMUNITION BANNED: The bill expands the definition of
what constitutes banned armor piercing bullets beyond .50 caliber, which
have already been banned.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INVESTIGATIONS: The bill allows police to seize
ammunition, under the same circumstances as they can seize guns, when
investigating domestic violence crimes.

INCREASED CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR GUN TRAFFICKING AND OTHER GUN-RELATED
OFFENSES: Sixteen specific firearm related crimes have increased felony
penalities and mandatory minimum sentences usually moving from one
felony category to at lease one higher punishment level.

SAFE STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Owners must secure firearms if they know that
a resident on the premises is ineligible to possess firearms under
state or federal law or poses a risk of imminent personal injury to
himself, herself or others. The current ban applied to keeping the
firearms away from anyone who is under age 16. As under current law, a
gun owner is strictly liable for damages if an ineligible or at-risk
person gains access to an inappropriately stored weapon and uses it to
injure himself or someone else.

GUN PERMIT APPLICATION : The law requires those applying for a gun permit
to be a permanent resident of the town to which he or she applies, not
where they have a business. The usual process is two-part, with a local
official or police chief issuing a temporary state permit with other
aspects conducted by state police who issue the five-year state permit
if all requirements are met.

The new law prohibits anyone from applying for a temporary permit more than once in a 12-month period.

EFFECTIVE JAN. 1, 2014

DANGEROUS WEAPON OFFENDER REGISTRY: Individuals must register with the
Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection for a period of
five years after they have served their sentences for any of more than
40 weapons offenses or another felony that the court makes a finding
involved the use or threatened use of a deadly weapon.

They must keep their registration address current at all times and check
in once a year with local law enforcement. This is the first statewide
weapon offender registry and was requested by urban mayors and the
Police Chiefs Association. It will only be available to law enforcement.

REGISTER LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINES : Anyone who lawfully possesses a
magazine with more than 10 rounds as of April 3, 2013, must register
them with the state by January 1, 2014. Orders of such magazines made
before April 3, 2013, but delivered after that, still are legal but must
be registered.

REGISTER BANNED ASSAULT WEAPONS : Anyone who legally owned a now-banned
assault weapon by April 3, 2013, must apply for a certificate of
possession by Jan. 1, 2014.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Michael Lawlor, Malloy's chief liaison on criminal matters, said the
Department of Emergency Service and Public Protection will need more
staff and the governor is committed to funding this . He said the
regulations and forms necessary for the new registration of assault
weapons and large-capacity magazines and other requirements should be in
place by August 1.

A permit to carry for handguns now takes several months and that is
expected to continue. Additional personnel for much of the eligibility
processing will not need to be state police.

While there was an increase in processing gun sales since the tragedy in
Newtown, the reduced number of weapons Connecticut residents are now
allowed to buy will ease that bureaucratic impact.

State Rep. Steve Dargan, D-West Haven, said his main concern is to make sure that the necessary funding is in place.

The estimated cost of improving mental health services and school
security, in addition to the firearms changes, is $18.5 million though
fiscal 2015, according to the Office of Fiscal Analysis. For the
tightened of gun restrictions and new permitting the high end estimate
through early 2015 is $6.395 million. (They said the Canadian gun registry would take about 2 million and be self funded after that... Over 2 billion later..)

The breakdown of costs to the Department of Emergency Services and
Public Protection is between $200,000 and $300,000 in fiscal 2013; $2. 2
million to $3.2 million in fiscal 2014; and $695,000 beginning in
fiscal 2015, related to safety and security audits, enhanced background
check and permitting requirements, and developing and maintaining a new
registry of persons convicted of committing a crime with a deadly
weapon.

The Newtown shootings were the impetus for new gun laws across the
country and a nationwide discussion, some of which resulted in tighter
rules in eight states. But 10 states passed more than a dozen laws that
made them weaker, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a
reflection of how the issue continues to be one of the most divisive in
the country.

President Barack Obama will be at the University of Hartford Monday to continue to lobby for stricter federal gun laws.

But reinstating an assault weapons ban or limiting magazines is not
expected to happen on the national level, and there continues to be
pushback to universal background checks, despite the renewed effort for
more gun regulations in light of Newtown

Schoolboy Sanele Masilela and mother-of-five Helen Shabangu took part in the lavish ceremony, but they were not officially wed.

No marriage certificate was signed. Instead, Sanele pretended to get married in order to

fulfill a request by his late grandfather, reports the Daily Mail .

Sanele's mother explained: "His grandfather never had a white wedding asked Sanele to get married. chose Helen because he loves her.

"I didn't have a problem with it, because I know it's what the ancestors wanted and it would make them happy."

Sanele said: "I told my mother that I wanted to get married because I really did want to.

"I'm happy that I married Helen, but I will go to school and study hard. When I'm older, I will marry a lady my own age."

Though it was not legally binding, around 100 guests saw Masilela and Shabangu exchange rings.

13-05-06 US GOV IS STILL AFTER ME...
The correspondence below was forwarded to the German Consul in Israel, who had previously provided protection against abuse of my rights by the US and Israeli governments.

Michael A Ratney, US Consul, Jerusalem
The US Consulate in Jerusalem is built in the no man's land between territories that were held by Israel and Jordan prior to 1967. The US Consulate in Jerusalem is unique among US diplomatic missions, since it reports directly to State Department, and not to any ambassador. It is likely that the US considers the Jerusalem Consulate of similar status to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - not subject to any law.
___________
Brief summary:

On January 1st, 2013, my bank accounts in Israel were blocked by Bank HaPoalim. The bank claimed that it was done on behalf of the US gov. No written records were provided. No legal procedure was the basis for such conduct, either in Israel or in the US.
The Israeli gov refused to provide Equal Protection under the law.

Eventually, after request for protection by the German Consul in Israel, my money was returned.

In parallel, on January 14, 2013, I appeared in the US Consulate in Jerusalem, paid the exorbitant fees, and fulfilled my duties for renunciation of US citizenship. The US Consulate scheduled me outside of working hours, and probably outside of consular calendar, and US Consult Kirk G Smith refused to perform his duties, and only false and deliberately misleading records were produced.

No response was provided at the end of the correspondence below by the US Consulate in Jerusalem.

It is not expected that the US gov would recognize my renunciation of US citizenship anytime soon (i.e., I do not believe that I would ever get a CLN - "Certificate of Loss of Nationality".)

In recent years, record numbers of US citizens have been trying to renounce their citizenship, and the US gov is engaging in various delay tactics to prevent them from doing so, in direct violation of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Education in India, thoughts after watching Jeff Bliss.

So an 18 year old kid goes off on a teacher, because "teacher isn't doing it right". I literally laughed my pants off when I saw it featured in Fox news and that the youtube video had gone viral.

I went to school in India, 70 to 75 students in a class, till the age of 15 when you clear the Secondary School Certificate exams (Grade 1 through 10).80 to 95 students a class in ages 16 and 17 for Higher Secondary Certificate exam (Grades 11 and 12). And then 100 or so per class in First year Engineering college. By the time we hit 2nd year in Engineering, the number had dropped to 35 or so, as most had miserably failed out.

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-05-04/mumbai/29508207_1_engineering-colleges-first-semester-exam-engineering-students

And these were not "government run - free" schools. These were bonafide, top tier schools, where you had to either get a 99% or above score to get in, or pay a kings ransom in bribes to enter.

In grades 1 to 10, we saw a Chemistry or Physics or Biology laboratory once in 10 years. In grades 11 and 12, it was a god awful mess with violence all around, since Mumbai has too many slums and all the ruffians from the slums would hang out in and around the school, trying to hit on the girls or to force the regular kids to pay them off.

The teachers were reasonable. Heavy handed, but reasonable.

When we entered Engineering school, things changed. There were no riff-raffs, most kids knew they were in for the toughest time in their lives, and they gave it their best. To give you an idea, you had to score above 99% to be considered for a free seat in top Mumbai Engineering college. Except of course the lower castes got in through affirmative action and the rich bribed their way in through seats reserved for "athletes" (Rahul Gandhi, the Next prime minister of India got admission in through an "Archery" reserved seat). Athletes don't exist in India, take a look at the Indian Olympic medals tally.

But even that was not good enough.

To give you an example, 1st and 2nd semester each had 8 courses: Basic Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Communication Skills, Math, Engineering Drawing, Computer Programming. And each semester was about 4 and a half months in duration to finish studying text books, which I have found to be the same which are used in Masters degree courses in the US. And this is the first time in their lives that students are touching these topics, topics like Engineering drawing, which is drawing complex 3D perspectives.
http://www.tcetmumbai.in/SyllabusAll/FEsemI.pdf

And the professors! ROFLOLOLOL.

OMG they could barely speak English!!

They were the saddest bunch of sadists in the world... they were, everyone of them, short, dark skinned and remarkably ugly, poor in hygiene and dressing sense. And the truth was, they all belonged to lower castes. People who were pushed through affirmative action or some other bullshit to complete a 4 year degree in 8 years or so. Not kidding, not making it up, but this was the truth. (Ask your Indian co-worker!)

They all had HUGE chips on their shoulders... and they made life miserable for us.

How in the world can you teach Engineering in English, when you are unable to compose a simple sentence in English while talking.

For example : Pointing to a problem in the book, making a student stand up, and saying "How is you?!!" when he really wants to ask, "How would you solve this problem?"

"Cache memory" was pronounced "KA - che memory" the "KA - che" similar to the "KA - ching" sound we make to imitate a register at a store.

We hated them!!

We hated them more than anything else, just like they hated us. For them, we were the things they could never hope to become. We were taller, lighter skinned, more Caucasoid featured compared to their black/mongoloid ones. Our parents had money for our clothes, cars and cell phones. They burned... and they did what ever they could to make it miserable for us.

The biggest joke in the college was the grading system. Each course has 4 elements: 100 points for a written exam, 50 for practicals and 25 for "term work" and 25 for "viva". You have to pass every single "element" to be deemed you passed that course.

Written exam : Closed book exam. No multiple choice or true/false bull shit. Hard core math based calculations. Only basic scientific calculators without any kind of memory, allowed.
Practicals  = Laboratory experiments
Term work = writing meaningless journals of experiments and "assignments" which were the same since for ever, and we literally copied from journals some poor soul had written 5 years ago and had been since handed down generation to generation.
Viva = oral examination.

So in effect, 100 points in the written exams were the only ones where the student could really show off his mettle. the remaining 100 points (practicals, term work and viva) was completely at the teacher's mercy, since it was completely at the teacher's discretion.

At the tender mercies of ugly, jealous, sadistic freaks!!

Viva was public humiliation time. The sadists would bunch around a table and sadists from other colleges would be invited as "Impartial outsiders" to conduct the "viva", when it was actually all in cahoots.

I remember at one Viva, one particular Sadist from Father Agnel Engineering college, a Christian guy, forgot his name... that bastard looks at me in my face and says "These teachers you have at your school are so wonderful. So you left your 'Digital Circuits' lecture from here to attend a math lecture at a private tutoring place one day?" (I was taking private tutoring to actually learn the courses which the morons at the school could not teach, and one particular day I had to leave the Digital Circuit class because the tutor had scheduled an urgent review of the math course work).

I said "Yes I did!" ; He asked, "So you think you will pass in Math?" I said "Yes!" (I was a top ranker in the school) "What about Digital Circuits?"
"Yes I will pass that too!" I answered. He laughed out aloud "So you think you will pass in BOTH courses?". But the teachers from my school didn't laugh. They whispered to him about my past "record" of passing every exam at first attempt and my pristine record.

The sadist bristled... "Ok, so here is the deal! I will ask one question and if you answer me correctly, I will pass you in this viva and if not, I will fail you." (He did not give me a choice whether I wanted this or not). "Since you are such a Math lover, what was the 5th question in the math question paper that you took this semester?"

How the fuck does this have anything to do with "Digital Circuits" for which i was taking the viva? What the fuck was this, but a grown sadist taking it out on a young man and trying to ruin his life for nothing more than petty jealousy???

I have a remarkable memory, and I actually remembered the exact question from the Math paper and I answered him. My balls were in my mouth, but I answered the sadist who was looking to ruin my future and trying to fail me. After countless nights of staying up, working my ass off, just because his fellow sadists hated me, an adult sadist was trying to ruin the life of a bright young man. But I fucking knew the answer! And as he looked it up and confirmed it, I grinned. His eyes flashed fire.

But even then he failed me in the viva.

And if you fail in any of the 4 criteria in a course : written or practical or term work or viva, you are still considered a "fail". But thankfully the Central university which handles grading and deciding whether students will pass or not, gave me grace points to pass that 25 marks Viva.

And this was but one out of millions of stories I faced personally everyday, and so did my fellow students.

Compare that to what Jeff Bliss faces today...

We survived, not because of anything, but our own will and determination to complete our studies. Because we had our families at our backs 100% of the time, and they threw every resource they had at us, to help us. And because we knew, this was the only way out of the dingy shit hole that luck had some how birthed us in to.

I and 100% of my class mates from Somaiya Engineering college, Mumbai are now in the US or UK or Western Europe. Almost to a man, everyone got their masters degrees and some PhDs. And OMG, studying in the West was like a dream! They even had professors who took time to explain stuff. ROFLOLOL.

Don't believe me? Google K.J.Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai. Check their cut off percentage for admissions at First year engineering. And of course ask your Indian colleagues and friends.

PS: The dog in the picture is my beloved puppy: Manfred, wearing my sunglasses. :)

Tycoon Nochi Dankner and self-immolated Moshe Silman - judicial corruption in Israel

Tycoon Nochi Dankner and self-immolated Moshe Silman - two sided of the same coin - judicial corruption in Israel
Both Tycoon Nochi Dankner and self-immolated, social protest activist Moshe Silman had their fates determined by the Tel Aviv District Court. In both cases, judges of the Court, as described by Silman 'violated the law with impunity'. In the case of Tycoon Nochi Dankner the outcome was leaving him at the helm of his fraudulent corporate pyramid scheme with no recourse to bond holders and banking regulators. In the case of Moshe Silman the outcome was leaving him with nothing at all... Addressing corruption of the courts should be one of the primary objectives of the Israeli social protest movement.

Judge Hagai Brenner (Tel Aviv District Court) engaged in fraud on the court in the case of Moshe Silman. Judge Eitan Orenstein (Tel Aviv District Court) engaged in fraud on the court in the case of Nochi Dankner. Integrity of conduct of Judges Esther Hayut and Asher Grunis (Supreme Court) in a petition addressing judicial corruption remains questionable...

May 6, Occupy Tel-Aviv - papers filed in the Supreme Court yesterday, document the conduct of simulated litigation - fraud on the court - by Judge Eitan Orenstein in the IDB default case in the Tel Aviv District Court last week. In the largest financial institution default case in the history of the State of Israel, debt holders, who are financial institutions were allowed to participate in the charade, but representatives of bond holders and the Regulator of Financial Markets in the Ministry of Treasury were excluded. In such proceedings, no summonses were issued or executed, no attorney filed certificate of power of attorney, the case was terminated with no judgment or dispositive order, and public access to court records is unlawfully denied. At the end, tycoon Nochi Dankner was permitted to continue managing his fraudulent corporate pyramid scheme.

The case of the IDB default and Judge Eitan Orenstein is the latest in a series of cases, filed with the Supreme Court in a petition, which documents unprecedented judicial corruption of the Israeli courts over the past decade. Another notable case of simulated litigation - fraud on the court - which was filed with the Supreme Court in the same petition, is the case of self-immolated, social protest activist Moshe Silman. Silman too was subjected to a charade in the Tel Aviv District Court - by Judge Hagai Brenner. In litigation against the Social Security administration, Attorney (retired judge) Sarah Frisch, who appeared on behalf of the Social Security, and the Social Security administration refuse to answer - who was attorney of record for Social Security in the case. Magistrate Hagai Brenner denied Silman's complaint against Social Security, and Pro Tem District Judge Hagai Brenner denied Silman's appeal from Brenner's own decision. In Silman's case as well, the Tel Aviv District Court unlawfully denies public access to court records.

In the opening lines of his last letter, Silman correctly described such conduct as denial of access to justice and violation of the law with impunity.

Together, the two cases, of Nochi Dankner and Moshe Silman, both in the Tel Aviv District Court, vividly document the central role of judicial corruption in the socio-economic changes seen in Israel over the past decade, including dramatic increase in poverty and widening economic gaps.

The petition in the Supreme Court, details the two above cases ans others. The petition was filed with the Supreme Court on April 15, 2013, and names Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni and Director of the Courts Michael Spitzer as respondents. The petition claims that the Ministry of Justice and the Administration of the Courts colluded over the past decade in the implementation of fraudulent computerized record systems in the courts, which are central instruments in enabling such conduct.

Beyond documenting individual cases of judicial corruption in various courts, the petition shows that starting in 2004, the Administration of the Courts was permitted by then Minister of Justice Tommy Lapid, to alter the Regulations of the Courts in an unspecified manner, as part of implementation of the new generation of computerized system in the courts, with no public notice. Today, the Regulations of the Courts in Israel are confidential...

The petition also documents that with the implementation of the latest generation of computerized systems of the courts, the duties and obligations of the Chief Clerks, relative to integrity of courts records, was undermined. Today, falsification of of court records by judges is a widespread problem, widely reported in the cases of Judge Vardah AlSheikh and former Judge Hilah Cohen, and also noted in the latest report of the Ombudsman of the Judiciary.

By now, there is perhaps no Chief Clerk in any of the Israeli courts (including the Supreme Court), who holds a lawful appointment record. At the same time, the Chief Clerks refuse to certify any court records, or authenticate the service of court decisions.

Whether the petition in the Supreme Court would be accorded due process, remains questionable:
The Supreme Court has used its own computerized system to undermine the integrity of the records in the petition - the court refuses to register the filing of the petition opening record. Supreme Court Justice Esther Hayut "released" a decision on a request that the office of the clerk of the Supreme Court refused to accept. After two letters to Supreme Court Presiding Justice Asher Grunis over the past tow weeks, asking that he ensure honest registration of records in the petition, the Supreme Court continues to engage in false and deliberately misleading registration of the records. In short, in dealing with a petition, which documents widespread judicial corruption in the Israeli courts through falsification of court records and conduct of simulated proceedings, the Supreme Court itself is resorting to the same conduct...

Conduct of the Supreme Court in the petition also demonstrates that Israeli judges (like their counterparts in the US and elsewhere) are not ready, willing, able to address their own corruption.

Reform must be imposed on the courts. Addressing judicial corruption should be one of the primary objectives of the Israeli social protest movement.

BOSTON: A funeral home director was scrambling to find a cemetery that would bury a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, ignoring protesters gathered outside his business and saying everybody deserves a dignified burial service no matter the circumstances of his or her death.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died from "gunshot wounds of torso and extremities" and blunt trauma to his head and torso, said Worcester funeral home owner Peter Stefan, who has Tsarnaev's body and on Friday read details from his death certificate.

The certificate lists the time of his death as 1:35 am on April 19, four days after the deadly bombing, Stefan said. Tsarnaev died after a gunfight with authorities who had launched a massive manhunt for him and his brother, ethnic Chechens from Russia who came to the United States about a decade ago. Police have said he ran out of ammunition before his younger brother dragged his body under a vehicle while fleeing.

Tsarnaev's family was making arrangements on Friday for his funeral as investigators searched the woods near a college attended by 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was captured less than a day after his brother's death. Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body was released by the state medical examiner Thursday.

It initially was taken to a North Attleborough funeral home, where it was greeted by about 20 protesters, before being taken to Stefan's Graham Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors, which is familiar with Muslim services.

"My problem here is trying to find a gravesite. A lot of people don't want to do it. They don't want to be involved with this," said Stefan, who said dozens of protesters gathered outside his funeral home, upset with his decision to handle the service.

Looking forward to some creative suggestions.

FBI focuses on Boston bomber's widow after agents discover radical Islamist files on her computer and traces of explosive residue throughout her home

:Katherine Russell, 24, had al Qaeda's extremist Inspire magazine on her computer
:Traces of explosives were found in bathtub, sink and on a table in her and Tamerlan Tsarnaev's Cambridge, Mass., home
:Russell spoke to Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the hours after the FBI released images of him, but she will not reveal what they discussed
:Fingerprints and DNA found on at least one bomb does not belong to her
Authorities 'skeptical about her insistence she had nothing to do with it'

Federal officials investigating the Boston bombings have discovered radical Islamist materials on a computer belonging to the widow of the deceased suspect, it was revealed Friday.

Katherine Russell, 24, has repeatedly claimed through her attorney that she knew nothing about the deadly April 15 bombings allegedly set off by her late husband, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and his younger brother, Dzhokhar.

However, the discovery of al Qaeda's Inspire magazine on Russell's computer, along with the presence of explosive residue throughout their home, have raised new questions about Russell's possible involvement in the act of terror.

According to a government document obtained by NBC News, an analysis of the bombs used at the Boston Marathon and pipe bombs that the Tsarnaevs had allegedly thrown at police may have been built following instructions that appeared in an Inspire article titled: Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.

Officials have yet to determine whether the Islamist files found in Russell's possession belonged to the 24-year-old mother, her late 26-year-old husband or a third party, a source told The Washington Post.

Tamerlan Tsranaev was shot dead in a gun battle with police four days after the marathon bombings when he and his brother allegedly carjacked a vehicle in a Boston suburb.

His younger brother, 18-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had fled, setting off a massive manhunt that ended when he was discovered gravely wounded hiding in a boat.

Russell's attorney, Amato DeLuca, had previously said his client was kept in the dark about the deadly plot, and she was shocked to learn that her husband and brother-in-law were allegedly responsible for the attacks.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that investigators inspecting Russell and Tsranaev's home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, found traces of explosive residue in the kitchen sink, the bathtub and on a table.

Following his arrest, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told police that he and his older brother built the pressure cooker bombs in the basement of the Cambridge residence.

It was established earlier this week that female DNA found one a piece of an explosive device used in the attacks did not match Russell's, but rather belonged to a department store clerk where the siblings had purchased the pressure cookers.

In another development in the case, federal and state law enforcement officials accompanied by bomb-sniffing dogs scoured a wooded area near Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev attended college, in search of new evidence possibly related to the attacks.

According to witness accounts, the brothers may have tested explosives in the woods two weeks before the bombings

It was revealed earlier this week that Tamerlan Tsarnaev called his wife in the hours after the FBI released surveillance images of him and his younger brother.

But only Russell knows what was said in the conversation, as she has stopped cooperating with authorities over recent days, the New York Times reported.

Authorities are skeptical of her insistence that she played no role in the attack or in helping the brothers escape the authorities following the release of the photographs, the Times reported.

A source told CNN that the bombs were built in the apartment that Tsarnaev shared with Russell and their three-year-old daughter. Residue samples were found on the kitchen table, the kitchen sink, and the bathtub, the source said.

Her silence comes as sources told the newspaper that the fingerprints and female DNA found on at least one of the bombs did not belong to her. Authorities had taken a sample from her this week.

Spokesman Jason Pack confirmed that agents investigating the Boston bombings visited the North Kingstown home of Russell's parents, where Tsarnaev's widow has been staying since the attacks.

An official had revealed that female DNA was found on at least one of the bombs, although investigators haven't determined whose it is or whether it means a woman helped the two suspects.

Her lawyer says Russell denies any involvement in the bombings, but authorities are still working to establish what exactly she knew - if anything - before or after the April 15 attacks.

On Wednesday, attorney Amato DeLuca insisted Russell 'will continue to meet with law enforcement, as she has done for many hours over the past week, and provide as much assistance to the investigation as she can'.

Russell met Tamerlan while she was a student at Suffolk University, according to her lawyer. She converted to Islam and they married in 2010 before having a daughter, now three.

Her husband was killed on April 18 following a shoot out with police in Watertown. Investigators say his younger brother hit him with a car as he fled the scene.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was caught the following day as he was found hiding in a boat in a backyard.

Tsarnaev's cause of death could be released on Friday. The state medical examiner's office will go public with that information once the funeral home files a death certificate.

Russell, who has been living with her parents in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, learned this week that the medical examiner was ready to release his body and wanted it released to his family.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Terrel Harris said a funeral home retained by Tsarnaev's family picked up the remains. He said he had no more information about plans for the body.

Tsarnaev's uncle Ruslan Tsarni, of Maryland, said Tuesday night the family would take the body.

'Of course, family members will take possession of the body,' Tsarni said. 'We'll do it. We will do it. A family is a family.'

The April 15 bombing, using pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails, ball bearings and metal shards near the marathon's finish line, killed three people and injured more than 180 others.

Russell's attorneys have previously said she and her family were in shock when they learned of the allegations against her husband and brother-in-law, Dzhokhar.

Israel: Corruption of the banks and banking regulation is led by the courts - the case of Hermatic v IDB

Judge Eitan Orenstein, Tel Aviv District Court, established himself in a leadership position in corruption of banking and banking regulation in the State of Israel... The Israeli Jed Rakoff.

Israeli media lavished praises on tough Tel Aviv District Judge Eitan Orenstein, who presided in a case arising from the collapse of Tycoon Nochi Dankner's IDB corporate pyramid scheme. Review of court records in the case, indicates the conduct of simulated litigation (fraud on the People and on the court), managed as a Blitzkrieg (start to finish about 5 days, two proceedings), where:

* no summonses were issued or executed,

* no attorney who appeared before the Court filed Certificate of Power of Attorney,

* Plaintiffs and Defendants were financial institutions, but requests by major shareholders' representatives and government banking regulators to join the Plaintiffs as well as a request to convene a meeting of debt-holders were denied,

* parties were ordered to appear in court or file papers in court from the morning to the same afternoon,

* neither the name or of the Chief Clerk, his signature, nor the Seal of the Court appear on any record,

* none of the records filed by the parties was stamped "Filed",

* the case was purportedly terminated with no dispositive record,

* the Chief Clerk occupies his office with no lawful appointment record,

* public access to court records is denied (although the case is listed as "not sealed") with no reference to the law.

The case vividly documents the leadership role of the courts in unprecedented corruption of financial institutions and banking regulation and the limits on Freedom of the Press in the State of Israel. Israel is speedily mimicking conditions, which were established in the United States a decade or two earlier, and are at the core of the socio-economic crisis there. With it, the case marks the penetration of the global financial crisis into Israel, under the tenure of Teflon Stanley Fischer!

Source: http://gatesofvienna.net/2013/05/everything-you-have-learned-in-school-is-wrong/

Our Norwegian correspondent The Observer has translated an article from Rights.no about the ghastly predicament in which young Norwegians find themselves within heavily culturally enriched districts of Oslo.

Well-off natives can afford to move to safe, pleasant white enclaves,
where they may send their children to school among white native
speakers of Norwegian. Less affluent citizens are not so fortunate,
however, and are forced to endure the humiliation and degradation of the
Multicultural behavioral sink in which their political masters have
consigned them to live.

The translator includes this introductory note:This report shows the real consequences of the enormous
betrayal of their people by the ruling elites in Norway. Sadly, the same
thing goes on in every Western European country today, and on both
sides of the Atlantic.

There is something seriously wrong with politicians who actively
pursue policies that have such horrific outcomes. Nor is this
ground-breaking information that is being presented in this article - it
has been going on for a couple of decades now in Norway.

The politicians know it, but they keep their mouths shut and let the vulnerable 'youths' pay the price for their betrayal.

As a matter of interest, Finansavisen (which published the
original piece) is one of the very few newspapers in Norway that don't
receive press subsidies. Every Norwegian newspaper journalist is
subsidized by the authorities to the tune of $75,000 per year. Which is
perhaps also why (as far as I know) no other MSM newspaper has covered
this story - for them, Norwegian 'racism' against non-Norwegians is all
that matters.

The translated article:

Norwegian boys in the new Norway

Over the past few weeks, Finansavisen
has focused on immigration and its economic consequences. We have
commented on several of these previously. Last weekend the journalists
Kjell Erik Eilertsen, Ole Asbjorn Ness and the photographer Iv'an Kverme
left behind their calculators and computers and met with some of the
individuals who are growing up in the new Norway. They decided to focus
on the youngsters, Norwegian boys, who are growing up in the most
immigrant-dense area of Norway - Groruddalen in Oslo.
And they have produced an article that other media would probably refuse
to print.

Groruddalen is an area that covers four neighborhoods: Stovner, Alna,
Grorud and Bjerke. All the neighborhoods have an immigrant population
approaching 50 percent.

Finansavisen has made contact with two young boys in the
"valley". One of them, Marius Sorvik, has decided to go public, and his
name and picture appear in the newspaper. The other one has decided to
remain anonymous. Finansavisen refers to him as "Andreas". One
boy was interviewed twice and the other one on three occasions. They
were given copies of the article to read through before it was
published, and confirmed that they have been quoted correctly. In
addition to this Andreas' father has read the article and given the
newspaper the approval to publish his son's story.

Two different worlds in 35 minutes

When the decision to travel to Groruddalen was finally made, Finansavisen
decided that the journalists should travel there in the manner that
most of the youths choose, namely by riding the subway train. The trip
from Smestad to Stovner takes approximately 35 minutes, according to Finansavisen , and I guess that during the journey they were shown two different worlds.

When they arrive in Stovner, they hear the voice of "Andreas":

"A few weeks ago," he says, "I was entering the schoolyard. They were
attacking Lars. There's a whole heap of them. They always attack as a
group. They are dogs, they hunt in packs. They are beating him up. I run
in between them and I punch one of them. Then someone comes rushing to
and separates us, and yet again I'm being hauled off to the principal's
office, and yet again I am being told that even if they punch us we are
not supposed to retaliate. Do you know how insanely provocative such a
statement is?"

Finansavisen's description of Andreas leaves no room for doubt:

He is sixteen. He is angry. He's scared. He is brave. He is tired. He
wants to tell. He's got the face of a boy and the eyes of a man.

"I would have gone public with my full identity had it not been for
the fact that I have younger siblings. People need to realize what it is
like to grow up here," he says.

Home is a place somewhere in Groruddalen. That's where he grew up. He
spends one week at his mother's place and the next one at his father's
place. His stepfather is nice. His father is great. His mother is great,
but na"ive.

That is not the problem. This area is what's the problem.

"My mum told me that it would be good for me to grow up here. I would
get to know the new Norway, get to know different cultures."

Then we are introduced to Marius Sorvik.

He is nineteen. He is articulate. He is brave. He's scared. He is
weak. He is successful. He has dropped out of school. He has a beard. He
is too young to have beard. He is pretty in the eyes of young girls. He
is only 19, but he has made four movies. He earns money. Right now he
is staying with his mum.

He came to Groruddalen from Fredrikstad when he was one year old. Soon he'll move back to Fredrikstad.

"They are to be pitied"

The boys have difficulties defining themselves, "the others" and animal metaphors are often used:

They both belong to an animal species that is rapidly diminishing in
Groruddalen. They do what all animals do: Come up with survival
strategies. Trying to find a way to show off their feathers in all its
glory, run and hide when they are outnumbered.

Human nature: The wish to retaliate: revenge, vengeance, one day they
might be the strongest, and not be outnumbered. Them. Against them. The
others. Strangers with Norwegian passports. The ones they were told to
be considerate of when they attended elementary school. Their species
has as of yet not been officially labelled. For want of a better term,
we chose to use the term that Marius uses to describe himself, a young
ethnic Norwegian male.

"All the teachers told me, the principal told me, if I had an
altercation with them I had to understand that they were to be pitied,
that they came from countries where there had been war. I thought that
he was joking. Their grandparents emigrated from Pakistan. So if I hit
someone no one would scold me because my grandfather had been a member
of the Norwegian Resistance Movement? But I believed in it."

Duped by the school

The elementary school in Groruddalen is a pleasant experience for
both of them in the beginning. They sing the songs, they believe in the
songs, they live the songs. Then it starts to sound false, the childhood
comes to an end, fifth grade:

"You discover who you are," says Andreas.

"People are different; everything you have learned in school is wrong," says Marius.

You have the ethnic Norwegian boys, and then there are the others.
Faced with these two choices, the two boys chose different strategies:

Marius' strategy

He doesn't lower his head. He refuses to take any crap. He answers
back. He's loudmouthed. He is who he is. It does not matter. But that's
not why they target him. It is an autumn evening in seventh grade. He is
playing tennis. When he leaves the court to collect some tennis balls
they appear. They are seven or eight Somalis. The beat the crap out of
him, he has to get new teeth put in.
Marius doesn't slow down. He calls a Roma girl a gypsy, something
that isn't appreciated. When her brothers and cousins come for him, he
hides in the principal's office. It has begun. Andreas' strategy

He lowers his gaze, he wants to be like them, talk like them, he
alters his language, limits his vocabulary, makes deliberate spelling
mistakes - 'an school', kebab-Norwegian, buys a soft gun, wants to be
like the older, tougher, cool Pakistani guys that have cars and money
and no job, why not become a Muslim, become a brother?
He wants to be like them, but he doesn't become like them, something inside him is resisting.

Fragments: the bad grades in the Norwegian classes, the bad friends,
Islam, he notices how they view women, as an object, how they react when
he tries to discuss Islam with them, how they talk about respect, but
don't show any respect, how they refer to Norwegians as f***ing
Norwegians, whitey, potato; something inside him resists.
He withdraws. They notice that he withdraws. Then it starts.

Constant fear

We learn about the suffering of Marius:

He heads off to school an hour before it starts in the morning. He
heads home before it finishes in the afternoon. More episodes, more
threats. Fear is not an isolated event, but rather a continuous stream.
In tenth grade he goes to see the doctor and lies about having social
anxiety. He is given a medical certificate so he can spend as little
time as possible in school. He's scared. Says that they always come in
packs. Says that they always stare when he sees them on the subway when
there are twenty of them, and when he gets a girlfriend they cry out to
him:
"'Hey Marius have you got yourself a girlfriend,' and it's not the
words that are threatening, but the way they are being uttered, do you
understand, how they look at me and my girlfriend who starts to cry, do
you understand?"
NRK's "concept" of "our valley"

We are being told that Marius' fears have subsided, although they can still return:

It has been three years since he graduated from high school. He can
still feel a twinge of fear whenever he meets the gangs on the subway,
but he doesn't give a ****, he has made four movies, he says what he
thinks, he is who he is, the valley is what it is, he writes op-eds
about life in Groruddalen and gets them published in VG and Dagsavisen ,
he is only nineteen but he has already had a heart attack and he has
been interviewed twice by the producers of the Norwegian TV series
'Dalen Var' , Elisabeth Brun (see separate article) to
find out if his story fitted in with the story about Groruddalen.
It did not.

"Your views do not fit in with our concept," she said. That TV series
is state-funded propaganda. A documentary where the angle has been
determined in advance is no documentary, but a half-mockumentary where
they have full control of what is being said. If you are going to tell a
story about what a great place Groruddalen is, then you can't talk to
young ethnic Norwegian boys, because most of them will tell you that it
is a horrible place.
Worried about murders

Andreas is also suffering, despite attempts at hiding it as much as possible:

He has withdrawn into himself, although he still has a Muslim friend
from a very religious family. Let's call him Omar. He tries to persuade
Andreas to become Muslim. Omar tells him about the judgment and the hell
that awaits all those who refuse to submit to Islam in time. Omar tells
him that he needs to stop enjoying life, but rather prepare himself for
the next life. Forsake. But Andreas says that he is wary of Islam;
actually it's more than that: he doesn't like Islam, not the strictness,
vengefulness, its view of women, all the talk about the chastity of
women, hijab, not because they want to but because they have to.
They discuss. The discussions descend into verbal altercations.

"He told me that he was going to kill me. I threatened him back."

Andreas allies himself with ethnic Norwegians in the motorcycle community for protection, a 1% club.

"Had it not been for them he would have killed me."

Cowardly Muslims

Andreas doesn't deny that he's still scared. That he lift weights to
gain strength. He also says that he's contemplating carrying a knife,
but that he fears the police knife controls. He says that he's made
deals with his friends, that they will all stand up for each other.
Friends who also lift weights and that are into martial arts.
"Muslims don't fight you on a one-to-one basis. If you meet them
alone they are cowards. If I run into Omar alone, he will just walk past
me. If I am alone and meet him in a crowd, the best outcome I can hope
for is a beating."
Marius has lifted his gaze. Now he can start to analyze it all.

"There is a hierarchy, where ethnic Norwegian boys are on the bottom
rung on the ladder. They will be targeted unless they accede to their
rules, if they don't they become Norwegian immigrants. If a Norwegian
boy gets into trouble, odds are that he has a small family and a tiny
social network. Unlike a Pakistani or Somali boy, he doesn't have a clan
of brothers and cousins and uncles who come rushing to his aid in the
event of a conflict. Most of the time the only thing he has is a single
parent."
Norwegian is weakness, Norwegian culture is on the way out

Andreas believes that the Norwegian culture is being squeezed out.

"Nobody wants to be a Norwegian here. Norwegian is synonymous with
weakness. This is a feeling that is also being conveyed by the teachers.
"They are afraid. They don't dare to speak out. You should have a
look at the number of principals that have come and gone at Vestliveien
school in recent years, and ask them why they left. They don't have
control, but they do everything to accommodate the Muslim students. In
home economics classes everybody has to prepare halal meat. Immigrants
do not have to attend 'NyNorsk' classes . I have to attend these classes. The
Muslim girls do not have to attend the physical activity classes;
because of course they cannot undress in front of other girls. We have
to adapt to their culture. They don't have to adapt to ours."
Andreas' views on girls:

"There is one thing that annoys the hell out of me. They can start
chasing Norwegian girls, but we cannot go after theirs. It's something
you learn early on. You just don't go after a Pakistani girl, but
Norwegian girls are available to immigrant boys. Norwegian girls prefer
them. I don't know why. I guess it must be that brown skin. That they
are tough, that they have money despite not having jobs. They don't see
that they fight in packs, that they are cowards. I asked my best female
friend if we could get romantically involved, and she told me that I
have the right personality, but the problem was that I'm Norwegian. She
wants to become involved with a foreigner."
He believes that Oslo will eventually become Oslostan.

"It's not going to happen straightaway, but it that's the way its
going. More and more Muslims arrive here from abroad, and many
Norwegians convert. Personally I know of five converts. Here it's all
about Islam; Islam is strong, so why fight it?"
The betrayal and the silence

Andreas says that he feels betrayed. And his conversation with the journalists from Finansavisen
is the first time that adults let him speak freely, the first time that
he doesn't have to hold back and place restrictions on himself. He says
that he wants to become an actor. He wants to make a movie. Maybe a
movie about the real "our valley". He says that he wants to join the HV
youth (the youth division of the National Guard). "He wants the uniform.
He craves the authority that a uniform gives. No one messes with a
soldier."
Finansavisen 's reporters suggest that adolescence can be
tough for everybody, and they wonder how much of it is actually about
growing up in the valley and how much is trauma that many adolescents
experience, such as differentness, loneliness and exclusion. They even
ask them if they are paranoid - if there really is something to be
afraid of. Maybe they have deliberately isolated themselves and gone
into hiding and started worshipping imaginary horrors that have replaced
reality?
The boys' response is laughter:

They laugh. They smile. The journalists have not understood.

"It is not imagination when they shout after me, when they threaten me, when they hit me," says Andreas.

"Are you afraid to walk around alone?"

"I'm not. Not any more," says Marius.

"There are many places that I don't go alone. Especially at night," says Andreas.

We follow Andreas to the subway station.

"Do you see?" he says, and guides our attention to two immigrants. "Do you see how they stare back?"

He's right. They do stare. We lower our gaze first.

Once again we hear the animal metaphors that permeates their language:

"They are like cats, says Andreas - cats never back down. They challenge you. I get so f***ing mad."

The subway train arrives. We get on. After a few stop Andreas gets
off. We lean back in our seats and try to let the rattle of the train
carriage rock us into a kind of sleep. But sleep doesn't come.
The subway ride from Stovner to Smestad takes approximately 35 minutes.

Epilogue: After having read the draft, Marius gave us a call.

"You can delete the statement that I can walk around safely."

"Why?"

"I got beat up on the way home from the pub yesterday."
