Made in Glasgow: Hassan Rouhani, the moderate who has become Iran's next president

Saturday 15 June 2013
The man today declared as Iran's next president grew up in Glasgow, completing a degree and doctorate at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Hassan Rouhani, an avowed reformer, urged to a wide lead in early vote counting today, and the country's interior minister declared him the victor at 5pm today.

He studied at the old Glasgow Polytechnic (now GCU) in the 1970s and returned to undertake a law doctorate in the 1990s. He then went by the name of Hassan Feridon

Mr Rouhani, 64, who is married with children, is a cleric who speaks English, German, French, Russian and Arabic.

Earlier today, he had more than 51% of the more than eight million votes tallied so far, well ahead of Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf with about 16.6%. Hard-line nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili was third with about 13%.

The strong margin for Mr Rouhani gave him an outright victory and avoided a two-person run-off next Friday. Iran has more than 50 million eligible voters, and turnout in yesterday's poll was believed to be high.

Many reform-minded Iranians who have faced years of crackdowns looked to Mr Rouhani's rising fortunes as a chance to claw back a bit of ground.

While Iran's presidential elections offer a window into the political pecking orders and security grip inside the country - particularly since the chaos from a disputed outcome in 2009 - they lack the drama of truly high stakes as the country's ruling clerics and their military guardians remain the ultimate powers.

Election officials began the ballot count after voters queued for hours in wilting heat at some polling stations in central Tehran and other cities, while others cast ballots across the vast country from desert outposts to Gulf seaports and nomad pastures.

Voting was extended by five hours to meet demand, but also as possible political stagecraft to showcase the participation.

The apparent strong turnout - estimated at 75% by the hard-line newspaper Kayhan - suggested that liberals and others abandoned a planned boycott as the election was transformed into a showdown across the Islamic Republic's political divide.

On one side were hard-liners looking to cement their control behind candidates such as Mr Jalili, who says he is "100%" against detente with Iran's foes, or Mr Qalibaf.

Opposing them were reformists and others rallying behind the "purple wave" campaign of Mr Rouhani, the lone relative moderate left in the race.

Officials did not say in which parts of the country the ballots were counted.

But even Mr Rouhani's presidency could be more of a limited victory than a deep shake-up.

Iran's establishment - a tight alliance of the ruling clerics and the ultra-powerful Revolutionary Guard - still holds all the effective power and sets the agenda on all major decisions such as Iran's nuclear programme and its dealings with the West.

Security forces are also in firm control after waves of arrests and relentless pressures since the last presidential election in 2009, which unleashed massive protests over claims that the outcome was rigged to keep the combative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in power for a second and final term. He is barred from seeking a third consecutive run.

The greater comfort level by the theocracy and Revolutionary Guard sets a different tone this time. Opposition groups appear too intimidated and fragmented to revive street demonstrations, and even a win by Mr Rouhani - the only cleric in the race - is not likely to be perceived as a threat to the ruling structure.

Mr Rouhani led the influential Supreme National Security Council and was given the highly sensitive nuclear envoy role in 2003, a year after Iran's 20-year-old atomic programme was revealed.

"Rouhani is not an outsider and any gains by him do not mean the system is weak or that there are serious cracks," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "The ruling system has made sure that no-one on the ballot is going to shake things up."

Yet a Rouhani victory would not be entirely without significance either. It would make room for more moderate voices in Iranian political dialogue and display their resilience.

It also would bring onto the world stage an Iranian president who has publicly endorsed more outreach rather than bombast toward the West.

The last campaign events for Mr Rouhani carried chants that had been bottled up for years.

Some supporters called for the release of political prisoners including opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, both candidates in 2009 and now under house arrest. "Long live reforms," some cried at Mr Rowhani's last rally, which was awash with purple banners and scarves - the campaign's signature hue in a nod to the single-colour identity of Mr Mousavi's now-crushed Green Movement.

"My mother and I both voted for Rouhani," said Saeed Joorabchi, a university student in geography, after casting ballots at a mosque in west Tehran.

In the Persian Gulf city of Bandar Abbas, local journalist Ali Reza Khorshidzadeh said many polling stations had significant lines and many voters appeared to back Mr Rouhani.

Just a week ago, Mr Rowhani was seen as overshadowed by candidates with far deeper ties to the current power structure: Mr Jalili and Mr Qalibaf, who was boosted by a reputation as a steady hand for Iran's sanctions-wracked economy.

Then a moderate rival of Mr Rouhani bowed out of the presidential race to consolidate the pro-reform camp. That opened the way for high-profile endorsements including his political mentor, former president Akbar Heshmi Rafsanjani, who won admiration from opposition forces for denouncing the post-election crackdowns in 2009. This, too, may have led to Mr Rafsanjani being blackballed from the ballot this year by Iran's election overseers, which allowed just eight candidates among more than 680 hopefuls.

Iran has no credible political polling to serve as harder metrics for the street buzz around candidates, who need more than 50% of the vote to seal victory and avoid a run-off. Journalists face limits on reporting such as requiring permission to travel around the country. Iran does not allow outside election observers.

Yet it is clear that fervour remains strong for Mr Rouhani's rivals as well.

Mr Qalibaf is riding on his image as a capable fiscal manager who can deal with the deepening problems of Iran's economy and sinking currency.

Mr Jalili draws support from hard-line factions such as the Revolutionary Guard's paramilitary corps, the Basij. His reputation is further enhanced by a battlefield injury that cost him the lower part of his right leg during Iran's 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq, which at the time was backed by the United States.

"We should resist the West," said Tehran taxi driver Hasan Ghasemi, who supported Mr Jalili.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not publicly endorsed a successor for Mr Ahmadinejad following their falling out over the president's attempts to challenge Ayatollah Khamenei's near-absolute powers.

Mr Ahmadinejad leaves office weakened and outcast by his political battles with Ayatollah Khamenei - yet another sign of where real power rests in Iran. The election overseers also rejected Mr Ahmadinejad's protege, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei ,in apparent payback. The usually talkative Mr Ahmadinejad gave only a brief statement to reporters as he voted and refused to discuss the election.

Ayatollah Khamenei remained mum on his own choice as he cast his ballot. He added that even his children do not know whom he backs.

Instead, he blasted the US for its repeated criticism of Iran's crackdowns on the opposition and the rejection of Mr Rafsanjani and other moderates from the ballot.

"Recently I have heard that a US security official has said they do not accept this election," Ayatollah Khamenei was quoted by state TV as saying after casting his vote. "OK, the hell with you."

Iran's state media hailed the apparently high turnout as a boost for the Islamic Republic's political system.

"A great political epic has shocked the world," read a front-page headline in the hardline daily Kayhan today. Ayatollah Khamenei had called for a "political epic" on June 14, saying a high turnout would protect Iran against its enemies.

By many measures, this election is far removed from the backdrop four years ago.

Iran's security networks have consolidated near-blanket control, ranging from swift crackdowns on any public dissent to cyberpolice blocking opposition Internet websites and social media. Hackers calling themselves the Iranian Cyber Army disrupted at least a half dozen reform-oriented websites, including one run by well-known political cartoonist Nikahang Kosar.

Prominent reformist politician Mostafa Tajzadeh, who was jailed after the 2009 disputed election, voted from his cell in Tehran's Evin Prison, the semi-official Isna news agency reported.

The economy, too, is under far more pressure than in 2009.

Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme have shrunk vital oil sales and are leaving the country isolated from international banking systems. New US measures taking effect on July 1 further target Iran's currency, the rial, which has lost half of its foreign exchange value in the past year, driving prices of food and consumer goods sharply higher.

Outside Iran, votes were casts by the country's huge diaspora including Dubai, London and points across the United States.

"I hope we take a step toward democracy," said Behza Khajavi, a 29-year-old doctoral candidate in physics from Boca Raton, Florida, as he voted in Tampa for Mr Rouhani.

In Paris, a 25-year-old Iranian student, Sohrab Labib, voted at his nation's consulate while a small group of protesters gathered across the street.

"It's our country. It's our future," he said. "In any case, even a little change could influence our future."

Iran Poll & Hassan Rouhani

In a surprise way, 65 year old nuke expert Hassan Rouhani has won the presidential campaign in iran- the target of western rogue states. Iranian democracy has enabled a smooth transition of power to succeed fire-brand but simple living president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who remained the main attraction in any international summit. .

Moderate candidate Hassan Rouhani secured victory in presidential election on Friday the 15th June with over 50% of the vote.. 72% of the 50 million eligible Iranians turned out at the polls. The country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with Ahmadinejad, congratulated Rouhani. Tehran's mayor, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, also conceded defeat by sending a congratulatory message to the president-elect. Other candidates did the same. Minutes after he was announced as the winner, thousands of jubilant campaigners and people across Iran poured into streets to celebrate.

Rouhani, a PhD graduate from Glasgow Caledonian University and a former nuclear negotiator, has pledged to find a way out of the current stalemate over Iran's nuclear programme, which is the cause of the sanctions crushing the economy. Rouhani, who favours a policy of political openness, as well as re-establishing relations with the west, is likely to soothe international tension. He has been described by western officials as an "experienced diplomat and politician" and "fair to deal with".

Rouhani served as the chief nuclear negotiator under the former president Mohammad Khatami. Under his watch, Iran agreed to halt uranium enrichment and was more co-operative with the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Organisation. During Rouhani's term as a nuclear negotiator, Iran appeared more co-operative to the international community and, leading up to Friday's poll, he repeatedly pointed out that on his watch Iran's nuclear dossier was not referred to the UN security council. During the campaign, Rouhani repeatedly noted that on his watch Iran's nuclear dossier was not referred to the UN Security Council and no major sanctions were imposed.

Although the only cleric among the eight candidates allowed to stand for election, the 65-year-old is seen as a pro-reform moderate figure. He has positioned himself as a moderate figure favouring political openness and improved relations with the west. He has pledged to find a way out of the stalemate over Iran's nuclear programme that led the west to impose tough sanctions. "It is good to have centrifuges running, provided people's lives and livelihoods are also running," Rouhani said during a TV debate.

QUICK REACTION

Significantly, the government had not endorsed any of the candidates. The endorsement of Rouhani earlier in the week by reformist leaders Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani injected last-minute excitement into the race, boosting his chances. The 65-year-old was the only cleric among the six presidential candidates.

The turnout for Friday's vote was so high that polling stations stayed open for five hours longer than planned. Speaking after casting his vote in Tehran, spiritual leader Khamenei had urged a mass turnout to rebut suggestions by American officials that the election enjoyed little legitimacy. "I recently heard that someone at the US national security council said, 'We do not accept this election in Iran'," he said. "We don't give a damn." Seyed Hossein Mousavian, Rouhani's deputy in Iran's national security council between 1997 to 2005, and a spokesperson for Iran's nuclear negotiating team, said the early results showed that people in Iran were desperate for a change in the country's foreign and economic policies.

The public support of Rafsanjani and Khatami and withdrawal of Mohammad-Reza Aref from the race had a major role in Rouhani's win. Khatami and Rafsanjani played a significant role in Rouhani's victory by holding off declarations of support and persuading a candidate Aref to drop out to avoid a split vote.

Britain urged Iran's new president to set his country on a "different course" after years of deadlock and dispute with the west. The Foreign Office said that it hoped Rouhani would use his victory to engage with international concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions and develop a "constructive" relationship with the wider international community. The former British foreign secretary Jack Straw knows Rouhani and described him as "warm and engaging". "This is a remarkable and welcome result so far and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be no jiggery-pokery with the final result," he said. "What this huge vote of confidence in Rouhani appears to show is a hunger by the Iranian people to break away from the arid and self-defeating approach of the past and for more constructive relations with the west." He added: "On a personal level I found him warm and engaging. He is a strong Iranian patriot and he was tough but fair to deal with and always on top of his brief." Trita Parsi, of the National Iranian American Council, said: "Though hardliners remain in control of key aspects of Iran's political system, the centrists and reformists have proven that even when the cards are stacked against them, they can still prevail due to their support among the population." White House spokesman Jay Carney said: "It is our hope that the Iranian government will heed the will of the Iranian people and make responsible choices that create a better future for all Iranians."

In 2009, when Ahmadinejad won his second term, the opposition Green movement, popped up and provoked by US led western terrocracies that sought to destabilize Tehran and make life conditions of Iranians more difficult, made big noise about the validity of poll and even claimed bogus victory. However people of Iran defeated all these vicious intentions again tn iran.

OBSERVATIONS

Today's elections all over the world, even in USA and UK, are fake and about choosing between bad and worse. Between devils and evil forces. Many corporatist strategists defending rampant corruption, bribery, sta crimes ems, illegal invasions for alien lands and resources, killing ing millions of Muslims worldwide and stealing their resources, especially much needed energy sources, say "voting is a national duty and a right given to you by God."

Threatened by top world terrocracies for energy resources and pursuing anti-islamism objectives, Iran is on the brink of an extraordinary political transformation after the moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani sensationally secured enough votes to succeed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Rouhani's victory delighted reformers who have been desperate for a return to the forefront of politics after eight acrimonious years under Ahmadinejad. It will also lift the spirit of a nation suffering from its worst financial crisis for at least two decades as a result of the sanctions imposed by western powers in the dispute over its nuclear program.

The Iranian currency, the rial, recovered its value against the dollar by more 6% as results were announced in Rouhani's favour. Rouhani issued a statement on television, saying "a new season of solidarity" had begun following a result that brought "rationality and moderation" as well as "peace, stability and hope".

Now iranians need peace. Both non-Muslim nations and anti-Islamic countries must now give up their tirade against iran and help iranians rebuild their economy, shattered by western rogue states and their reliable, rather faithful, agents in Tehran.

Sunni Arab world should shelve their enmity towards Iran and help islam flourish and Muslim live in peace. Saudi regime should the US agentship forthwith and behave!.

Strangely enough, non-Muslims are growing controlling Muslim nations. Sunni world is responsible for that funny phenomenon.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/408095/Asylum-seekers-sparked-terror-alert-on-flight

'Asylum seekers sparked terror alert on flight'

A TERROR alert which forced a packed passenger jet to land in the UK was sparked by desperate Syrians escaping the civil war in their homeland, police believe.

Senior officers investigating the drama which unfolded on Saturday are "utterly convinced" the note threatening to burn the plane in mid-flight was a ploy to have it diverted into a British airport.

The EgyptAir Boeing 777 was three hours into a flight from Cairo to New York's JFK airport when a passenger found the words "I set this plane on fi re" and a seat number scrawled in pencil on a paper napkin.

Flight 985, carrying 326 passengers and crew was 10 minutes from UK airspace when New York-based BBC producer Nada Tawfik discovered the warning as she changed her child's nappy in a toilet. The plane then made an unscheduled stop at Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire.

It is understood that the Syrians asked for asylum within minutes of being taken off the plane but all denied writing the threat or placing it in the toilet. They were handed over to the UK Border Agency.

Last night, one well-placed senior Police Scotland officer said: "The natural assumption among those involved in the investigation is that the note was written and left where it would clearly be seen in a quite calculated manner.

"There was a reason for that and it now looks like it was not some idiotic prank but a carefully - or perhaps, desperately - planned move to ensure that some of those on board could claim asylum at the first port of call."

He added: "The investigation will look very closely at the strong suggestion that those who subsequently sought to stay in the UK because of what's happening in Syria caused this entire event at Prestwick.

"It is an obvious line of inquiry and some of my colleagues, at a very senior level, are utterly convinced the motive for the threat was to force the plane to land in an asylum-friendly country."

Last night the asylum-seekers were being held at a secret location facing further questioning by UKBA and Police Scotland officers.

A police spokeswoman confirmed they had sought leave to stay in the UK and had been handed over to immigration officials.

EgyptAir CEO Tawfeek Asi identifi ed the passengers as Syrians but was unable to reveal any further details about them or the occupant of "seat 46D" which was written alongside the fi re threat.

After the alarm was raised, two Typhoon fi ghters were scrambled from RAF Leuchars in Fife to intercept the plane and escort it to Prestwick. The RAF pilots were in contact with the EgyptAir cockpit throughout the descent.

Passengers were surrounded by police, some armed, while sharpshooters covered the area from the airport terminal building.

It took six hours for all the 307 passengers, including four children, and 19 crew members to be processed before the plane resumed its journey early on Sunday after it was searched by police.

Glasgow Prestwick chief executive Iain Cochrane praised his staff and the emergency services for their handling of the incident.

The Home Office, responsible for managing the UKBA, was tightlipped about the asylum-seekers.

Nightclub Investigated for Installing 2-Way Mirror in Women's Bathroom

A new nightclub in Scotland is being investigated by police and other Glasgow city officials after a newspaper investigation revealed the club had installed two-way mirrors in its women's bathrooms, exposing the women to viewers in two private rooms.

The Scottish Sunday Express broke the story this weekend, claiming they've seen photos showing men posing in front of the two-way mirrors, with women using the bathroom behind them. The paper said there were no signs or notifications in the bathroom or club notifying the women they were being watched.

Several female club-goers interviewed by the paper expressed shock at the revelations. "I find it absolutely outrageous that a club can get away with this, it is a complete invasion of privacy of the unsuspecting girls," one said. "Nowhere is it made clear that this is the case so when visiting the bathroom for the first time, there are women bending over the sink, pouting into the mirror to redo their lipstick, adjusting themselves whilst unknowingly being watched by people on the other
side."

When reporters from the the Sunday Express contacted the club posing as potential clients, they were told the the private rooms, which cost over $1200 to rent, were not available to male or mixed gender groups. Photos online reportedly show otherwise. When the Express asked the club for official comment, they didn't receive a response.

However, on Monday the Shimmy Club responded to the growing controversy on their Facebook page, saying the two-way mirror was "created as a bit of fun, an interactive feature which we hoped would act as a talking point." As for those offended by the concept, the club writes, "its (sic) clear that those who are negatively commenting on line may not have been lucky enough to get past the door staff yet." The club did, however, say they would remove the mirrors "if your feedback (and not that of the media) is that you want the mirror area to change."

Those changes, if they do happen, might occur too late for the club to avoid legal trouble; The Guardian reports that Scottish police and and Glasgow city council are investigating the club after receiving complaints.

Child killer Peter Chester gets tens of thousands in legal aid
He raped and strangled his seven-year-old niece in 1977
Now he wants the right for prisoners to vote

A killer who raped and strangled his seven-year-old niece has been given tens of thousands of pounds in legal aid to demand the right to vote.

Peter Chester's lawyers argued in the Supreme Court yesterday that the UK's ban on prisoners voting breached his human rights and EU law.

The case in the country's highest court was given the go-ahead despite the Prime Minister's insistence that the voting ban will remain in place.

The case has already been heard twice in two other courts, costing taxpayers thousands.

Seven Supreme Court justices are conducting a two-day hearing that will finish today, with a judgment expected later this year.

Chester raped and strangled Donna Marie Gillbanks in Blackpool in 1977. He was given a life sentence the following year and has served 35 years behind bars.

A Scottish killer, George McGeoch from Glasgow, is also demanding voting rights in the same case, and has received legal aid amounting to lb7,280.

He was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 13 years, for the 1998 murder of Eric Innes in Inverness.

In an unprecedented move, the Government's most senior law officer, Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC, will personally argue against the killers' case.

He is expected to tell the court today the decision on prisoners' voting rights should be left to Parliament, not judges.

Peter Chester, who was jailed for the rape and murder of his niece in 1977, has been granted tens of thousands in legal aid for his battle to gain the vote

MPs have voted overwhelmingly to keep the ban in place, making clear their opposition to a European Court of Human Rights ruling that it should be overturned.

That dates back to 2005 when John Hirst, a convicted axe killer, won his Strasbourg case on the grounds that the ban on voting breached his human rights.

The Government is to respond to that case with a Bill that will be considered by a joint committee of both Houses of Parliament, but David Cameron has said the idea of giving convicts voting rights makes him 'sick', and told the Commons last year: 'No one should be in any doubt: prisoners are not getting the vote under this Government.'

Innocent: Donna Marie Gillbanks, who was raped and murdered at the age of seven at her home by Chester

Chester's case was dismissed by the Administrative Court in October 2009 and again by the Court of Appeal in November 2010.

Then, Lord Justice Laws said the issue was a matter for ministers: 'It is a political responsibility, and that is where it should remain.'

When details of the case first emerged, Chester's sister and his victim's mother, June Gillbanks of Blackpool, said: 'He gave up the right to vote when he strangled and raped my daughter. Prisoners have enough rights and victims very little.'

Dominic Raab, Tory MP for Esher and Walton, warned the case could be a 'backdoor' legal route to prisoners voting. EU law, which both men are citing, is, unlike Strasbourg judgments, enforceable by British courts.

Yesterday, Aiden O'Neill QC, for McGeoch, told the court that although the case was not a 'class action', it 'may have implications' for others.

It is feared that if the case is successful, taxpayers could be hit with compensation claims from inmates denied the vote.

The Legal Aid Agency said: 'Peter Chester was only granted legal aid after the Supreme Court gave permission for his case to be heard.

'Anyone who applies for legal aid must pass strict financial means and legal merits tests.

'The funding is being managed by a specialist team to ensure costs are carefully controlled.'

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said: 'The Government has made its position absolutely clear - we believe prisoner voting is a matter for national parliaments to decide.

'The Attorney General will strongly defend that position at the Supreme Court.'

British schools drop Holocaust from history lessons so as not to offend Muslims

A report by Britain's Department for Education and Skills notes that an increasing number of schools are dropping the teaching of the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim students. The report, titled Teaching Emotive and Controversial History, also observes that many teachers are reluctant to discuss the Crusades because the lessons frequently contradict what is taught in local mosques.

In an effort to counter 'Islamophobia' in British schools, teachers now are required to teach 'key Muslim contributions such as Algebra and the number zero' in math and science courses, even though the concept of zero originated in India.

The article further notes that 30 non-Muslim students at Parkview Primary School in Scotland were required to visit a mosque in Glasgow. During the two-hour-long field trip, in April of 2012, the children were instructed in the practice of wudhu, ritual washing to make the supplicant worthy of prayer before Allah. Family Security Matters maintains that the students were also instructed in the recitation of the shahada, the Islam declaration of faith, which states, "There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger." A video of highlights of the trip can be viewed here.

Muslim leaders are demanding that Islamic preachers be sent to every school in Scotland to teach children about Islam, ostensibly in an effort to counter negative attitudes about Muslims.

In London, 85 of 90 schools have implemented "no pork" policies, reflecting a nationwide trend toward banning pork from lunch menus, all once again to avoid offending Muslim students.

The question that naturally arises is whether any of this bend-over-backward pandering would be taking place had the hijackers who commandeered the four jetliners used as missiles on September 11, 2001 been anything other than Muslim. Taking an alternate hypothesis-that the attacks had been carried out by, say, murderous Zionists-would New York City public schools be mandating the teaching of Hebrew in grades 2 through 5?

'He should have cancelled his holiday and been here supporting that
poor family': Mother of soldier killed in Iraq savages Cameron for Ibiza
break in middle of terror crisis

The mother of a soldier killed in
Iraq has attacked the Prime Minister's decision to continue his holiday
in the wake of the Woolwich terror attack.
Mr
Cameron has been pictured soaking up the sunshine and sipping coffee
with his wife Samantha on holiday in Ibiza. The Prime Minister looks
blissfully relaxed during a 'few days break' taken with his family over
the Bank Holiday weekend.
But Rose Gentle, whose son Gordon died in a bomb attack in Iraq in June 2004, said his actions had been grossly insensitive.

Rose Gentle (left), whose son Gordon (right)
died in a bomb attack in Iraq in June 2004, said Cameron's actions had
been grossly insensitiveHis
decision to travel abroad came as the bereft family of executed soldier
Lee Rigby were making the heartbreaking trip to the spot he died.Mrs Gentle, from Glasgow, said: 'It was absolutely the wrong decision to go.

'I have seen the pictures of him on holiday, sitting there, looking quite the thing.

'He should be here, showing support for that family.

'I don't think he has handled the situation well at all. '

Mrs
Gentle added: 'Watching that poor mother brought it all back for me. I
think all of the families must have cried to see that. 'You
just wanted to go down there and give them a hug. He should have
cancelled his holiday and be here supporting that poor family.'

Trauma: The family of Drummer Lee Rigby visit
the scene of his death in Woolwich, south-east London, to see the
flowers and leave their own tributes. His mother and stepfather, Lyn and
Ian, are pictured

He had been serving with the Royal Highland Fusiliers and was killed just weeks after completing his training.

Since his death Mrs Gentle has become an outspoken critic of the conflict.

Critics have slammed the Prime Minister for 'swanning off' to the Mediterranean.

But
Downing Street maintains he is 'still in charge', and has brought a
team of staff with him as well as video conferencing facilities. But
this may not be a comfort to Drummer Rigby's family, who yesterday
clung to each other as they saw for the first time where the 25 year old
was slaughtered by Muslim fanatics. His widow Rebecca, the mother of the
soldier's two-year-old son Jack, made a tearful pilgrimage to the scene
of his murder and laid a wreath amid hundreds of other floral tributes
to her estranged husband. She wrote on the card: 'My hero, my
soldier, my one true love. Until we meet again my angel I know you'll be
watching over me and Jack. Love always xxx.'Another card tucked inside the wreath read: 'For my daddy.'

Mrs
Rigby, 30, sobbed and cradled a pink Peppa Pig soft toy as she pinned a
balloon with the words 'Dad in a million' close to the spot in Woolwich
where 25-year-old Drummer Rigby was allegedly run over and then
butchered by two Islamic fanatics on Wednesday.A
day earlier his the day after his fiancee Aimee West made the same
heartbreaking trip, who he is understood to have started a relationship
with after separating from his wife.

All polls

On Saturday, she wept as she set down a bouquet of roses at the scene of his murder.

Mr
Rigby's his devastated mother Lyn Rigby, 46, collapsed on the pavement
and wept violently as she joined her daughter-in-law at the scene.
Other
relatives, including the soldier's stepfather Ian Rigby, 54, wrapped
their arms around her in a fruitless attempt to console her.
The
family, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, visited the spot outside
Woolwich Barracks in south east London, where Drummer Rigby was based,
shortly before 12.40pm.
Emotional: Aimee West, the fiancee of murdered soldier Lee Rigby, steps forward to pay her own special tribute

Devastated: Miss West, 22, who had flown back to
the UK from Afghanistan, wore a green hooded top as she took her time
to read the tributes to her murdered partner

Note: Miss West left this message for Lee Rigby, saying he was her 'guardian angel' and she was his 'Princess'

One
of his sisters, Sara, left a frame which included four photographs of
the pair together, along with a bottle of HP sauce with a note saying
'Your favourite.'
She wrote: 'My brother, my best friend. So sorry this had to be you. Sleep well. Little sis, Sara xxxx.'

The
heart-wrenching scenes were watched by hundreds of members of the
public who had also gone to pay their respects to the murdered soldier.Machinegunner Rigby was hacked to death by two attackers in Woolwich, south-east London on Wednesday at 2.20pm.

Michael
Adebolajo, 28, and his alleged accomplice Michael Adebowale, 22, are
believed to have run down the off-duty British soldier with a Vauxhall
Tigra as he walked back to the Woolwich Barracks, crushing his body
against a road sign.
Witnesses
said the terror suspects then 'hacked and chopped' at his body like
'crazed animals', before dragging his corpse into the middle of the road
leaving a trail of blood.
As they apparently tried to decapitate him they were chanting: 'this is what God would have wanted'.

Photos and words: One of the tributes left for Drummer Rigby said 'Once a Fusilier - Always a Fusilier'

England's finest: A cross of St George - the
patron saint of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers - is draped over the
floral tributes

MI5 sources have admitted that
Woolwich murder suspects Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale,
22, were known to them, and Adebolajo had reportedly appeared in
'several investigations' because of his links to various banned groups.
But questions remain about what contact the security services had with Adebolajo, and if it happened, when it happened.

A friend claimed last week that the alleged killer was asked to spy for MI5 in late 2012.

Adebolajo is said to have bragged he was approached to turn informant six months ago but refused.

Abu
Nusaybah, who said he knew him for years, wrote on Twitter: 'Did u
know- Woolwich suspect Michael Adebolajo was approached by MI5 Just over
6months ago to work as a Spy, he refused?'But today it emerged that he may have been approached by spooks two years earlier than first thought.

The Independent said that MI5 tried to recruit him while he
was in jail in Kenya, where he was allegedly mistreated over several
days before being released without charge.Adebolajo's was heading with radicalised Muslims to Somalia to join with Al Shabaab, which has links to Al Qaeda.

Only
two months before, the then-head of MI5 Jonathan Evans had warned
Britons were training in Somalia and it was 'only a matter of time
before we see terrorism on our streets inspired by those who are today
fighting alongside Al Shabaab'. This may add credence to the argument that the security services were keen to gain access to extremists in the region.

A blood-soaked man believed to be
Adebolajo, who was still holding a number of weapons in his red-stained
hands, then ranted on camera in a clear London accent: 'You people will
never be safe. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.'

Within 20 minutes armed officers arrived and the fundamentalists charged at them wielding firearms, knives and a machete.

Police opened fire, taking the pair
down with up to eight bullets. The suspects remain under armed guard in
two separate London hospitals.Anti-terror
police in Kenya today accused the British of ignoring their warnings
that Woolwich murder suspect Michael Adebolajo was a dangerous radical.
Adebolajo
was arrested in Kenya in 2010 on suspicion of leading a jihadist plot
to cross the border into lawless Somalia and join the ranks of the Al
Shabaab terrorist group.
But
the Kenyans claim that when they presented their evidence to the
British Embassy, it was insisted Adebolajo had no criminal record.
The
Independent also claims that MI5 tried to recruit him while he was in
jail in Kenya, where he was allegedly mistreated over several days
before being released without charge.

Meanwhile while the issue rages,
controversially, Mr Cameron went on a mid-morning flight on Saturday
with his wife and their children Nancy, Elwen and Florence to Ibiza.
The Prime Minister's family break trip
came just three days after he chaired a meeting of the Cabinet emergency
committee Cobra to discuss the murder of Lee Rigby.Labour
MP John Mann criticised Mr Cameron's trip, saying: 'It's the wrong time
to go on holiday. At the moment he ought to be at his desk.'He added: 'It is dereliction of duty.

'He is paid to be Prime Minister and he needs to be here doing that.

'A lot of service families won't be able to have an additional holiday this week and it is grossly insensitive for him to so.

'More importantly there is chaos in government over the extremism policy.

'It
is insulting to the intelligence of the British people especially
suggesting he can run the country from a laptop on the beach .'Labour MP Sarah Champion said Mr Cameron's decision to take a break showed he was 'utterly out of touch.'

She
said: 'While the country struggles to come to terms with the vile crime
in Woolwich, he has swanned off to Ibiza. The public deserve better.' But Mr Cameron won some support for his decision to spend time with his family.

Labour's
justice spokesman Sadiq Khan said: 'He's got the intelligence at his
finger-tips, he went to Cobra meetings, he knows the risks and the
dangers. I'm sure he's decided to go on holiday after taking all that
into account.'

A man identified as Michael Adebolajo, 28,
brandishes a meat cleaver with bloodied hands near the scene of the
killing. It was claimed that MI5 offered Adebolajo a job six
months ago

Michael Adebowale, 22, of Greenwich, south-east
London, with a knife in his hand at the scene where Lee Rigby was
stabbed to death
Even Tory rebel Nadine Dorries, who
has been quick to condemn Mr Cameron in the past, said: 'We've got the
internet, we've got mobile phones. I think Cameron could actually get
back from Ibiza to London quicker than if he was in Cornwall.'
A No 10 spokesman said: 'As always, whilst away, he remains in charge, and has office support with him.'

The Prime Minister was ribbed over his leisure activities last year when an ally was quoted in a biography as saying:

'If
there was an Olympic gold medal for "chillaxing", he would win it. He
is capable of switching off in a way that almost no other politician I
know of can.'

Relaxing: Prime Minister David Cameron with his
wife Samantha today on the family break in Ibiza which has been
criticised by Labour

In the shade: Samantha and David Cameron have drinks at a restaurant in Ibiza out of the fierce sun

One of the people: A holidaymaker walks past the
Cameron table apparently oblivious to the fact the nation's leader is
just feet away

Having fun in the sun: Samantha Cameron enjoys the weather in Ibiza yesterday

Mr Cameron was warned yesterday that he has just 12 months to prove himself or risk losing the support of Tory MPs.

In
a coded warning that the Prime Minister could face a leadership
challenge next spring, David Ruffley warned the European elections in
May 2014 could be a 'flashpoint'.
Mr
Ruffley, the former shadow police minister, warned that losing to UKIP
in the Euro elections would cause up to 100 MPs in marginal seats to
lose faith in Mr Cameron.
And
in a second challenge to Mr Cameron, UK Independence Party leader Nigel
Farage revealed that he is in talks with up to 20 Tory MPs about
joining forces at the next election.

Warning: Tory MP David Ruffley (left) says David
Cameron has got 12 months to show that his strategy works' or face
losing voters to Nigel Farage's UKIP

Mr Farage also revealed that at least one Conservative MP has used a go-between to discuss defecting to UKIP.

The
UKIP leader said he was 'in talks all over the place' with 'about 20'
Tory MPs about standing on a joint ticket, and with Tory councillors who
want to defect.

Cumbria tiger attack: Sarah McClay 24 dies of her injuries

The death of a zoo worker attacked by a tiger could have been due to "human or technical factors", police said.

Sarah McClay, 24, was attacked by a Sumatran tiger in an enclosure at South Lakes Wild Animal Park, near Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, on Friday.

Detectives are investigating how Ms McClay and the animal came into contact, "with tragic consequences".

Park owner David Gill said there was "no reason" for Ms McClay to be in the enclosure with the tigers.

Det Supt Andrew Slattery from Cumbria Police said its inquiry was centred on "the management of dangerous animals".

'Inexplicable reasons'Mr Slattery said "systems and protocols" at the park were being investigated.

Sarah McClay died at Royal Preston Hospital"At this stage it is not a criminal investigation," he said.

Police said compartments in the tiger enclosure were connected by lockable doors but systems in place to ensure staff and animals were kept apart had "failed".

Mr Gill said Ms McClay, who is originally from Glasgow, was a "very experienced" staff member who had worked with big cats and was "proficient and passionate" at her job, but staff should have no direct contact with the tigers.

"We have very strict protocols and procedures for working with big cats, but it seems she failed to follow correct procedures," he said.

"For inexplicable reasons she opened a door and walked into the enclosure.

"We will never know why she entered without telling anyone. There was no reason for her to go in there."

Mr Gill described Ms McClay as a "bubbly, happy girl" and described her death as a "tragedy for her family and all the staff".

Park re-openedHe said the attack happened at about 16:00 BST on Friday and he believed it was witnessed by one member of the public.

The park was closed early and all visitors evacuated from the area, but following discussions with investigators and staff a decision had been made to reopen as usual on Saturday.

Mr Gill said: "The public were not at risk and we followed all our accident procedures to the letter.

The park's owner said there was "no reason" for Ms McClay to enter. Tiger photo is a file image from Edinburgh Zoo

"We had a meeting of all staff at 5.30pm and asked what they wanted. There was a huge consensus of opinion that we carry on.

"It would not do any good to close the park as there is no safety issue."

He said the Sumatran tiger, which has lived at the park for 10 years since it was a cub, would not be destroyed.

"He didn't do anything wrong. He's a tiger and his natural instinct is to kill. We all know that and that's why all the protocols are in place.

"He didn't make a mistake, he was just there. We don't blame him for what happened."

Jimmy Boyle (born 1944 in Gorbals, Glasgow) who, at one time, was reputed to be Scotland's most violent man is a Scottish sculptor, novelist and convicted murderer.

In 1967 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of another gangland figure, William "Babs" Rooney. During his incarceration in the special unit of Barlinnie Prison, he turned to art and wrote an autobiography, A Sense of Freedom (1977), which has since been filmed and starred David Hayman as Jimmy.

The film also featured Hector Nicol & Fulton Mackay.
Due to non-co-operation by the Scottish Prison Service in allowing a film crew access to their property, Hayman's scenes in prison were filmed in Dublin's Kilmainham Jail.

UK: "Ding dong, the witch is dead" gushes Glasgow

UK: "Ding dong, the witch is dead" gushes Glasgow

More than 300 people gathered in Glasgow's central George Square on Monday to celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Members of the Anti-Bedroom Tax Federation, the Communist Party, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and the International Socialist Group came together as a chorus of "So long, the witch is dead" erupted amongst the crowd, along with "Maggie Maggie Maggie, deid deid deid."

Thatcher served as prime minister from 1979 to 1990. Britain's first female prime minister, she is best known internationally for her role in the Falklands War with Argentina. She also gained notoriety for supporting Chilean strongman Augusto Pinochet and the Apartheid government of South Africa, calling ANC leader Nelson Mandela a "terrorist".

Anger towards Thatcher remains high in Scotland as her government is blamed for closing down Glasgow's shipyards and steel mills in the 1980s, as well as the introduction of the poll tax. Thatcher was forced to resign after she introduced the tax, which led to revolt and riots throughout the UK. Her government also privatised public services and industry, beating back challenges from the powerful mining and dockers unions, leading to a substantial increase in unemployment.

Ousted by an internal party revolt in 1990, Thatcher retired from public life after suffering a stroke in 2002. Downing Street accounced that she will receive a ceremonial funeral with military honours at St Paul's Cathedral in London. British Prime Minister David Cameron cut short a European tour, returning to England to pay tribute to his precursor.
