Michael Boggan lost both of his hands yesterday afternoon after the device, understood to be a golf ball, exploded in the back yard of a house in Leichhardt, near Ipswich, west of Brisbane. Today, speaking from his Princess Alexandra Hospital, he said: "Tell the kids out there to tell your parents if you find anything unusual. Just don't pick it up at all.""If you ever find anything with white powder in it with bearings in it, do not pick it up. It is a bomb.""I had no idea it was a bomb. It just blew up in my face", Michael said. "The tiniest powder, right, it goes into a huge flame. Right. And that was a golf ball, packed."He said the blast happened after he went to a nearby house with friends."Basically we all went around there. My mate was sitting there he said 'Oh Michael, check this out - I wasn't lying - I found heroin in a golf ball'.""He picks it out and puts it on this table and everyone was sitting there saying 'snort the shit Michael, I'll do it if you do it'." "I was like 'no freaking way man, you do it, and then I'll probably do it'.'"But none of them did it. What I usually could do is make them snort it and then I don't snort it or whatever.""But they didn't snort it, neither did I luckily. He put it on the table and I walked over, picked it up, had a look at it."He goes: 'I'll sell it to you for $5'. Oh yeah, a smoke sorry. 'I'll sell it to you for a smoke' right."I roll him a smoke and I give it to him.""He sold it to me. I was just sitting there playing with it. I was chucking it around and the next minute 'boom'.""I was shaking it up a little bit. I didn't know it would blow up.""I couldn't see for two seconds, and I couldn't hear for two seconds.""And then I looked at my hands and I was like 'tell me this is a dream, please tell me this is a dream'. ""There was just all of this, hung down, and all of this skin."He said he had known the other youth for "ages".His mother Rebecca Boggan said: "He has got a little finger on his left hand, that's it. And he has got a thumb on his right. They've managed to reconstruct and pin the index and the middle finger."The ring finger took a big swipe, I don't know how much of that is left. They don't know if the other two fingers are going to stay and not get infected. PIC: Marc RoberstonIpswich Mayor Paul Pisasale this morning said the boy had spoken for the first time since the incident."He has just come out surgery and he has related he was sitting around the table with a few boys and some young boy ... who has always been a bully to him has thrown some sort of golf ball explosive device at him and it has exploded."All I'm saying is this person needs to have some consequences for his actions because what he has done has sort of destroyed a young 15-year-old boy's life."Cr Pisasale said: "Michael said all the others (besides the one youth that threw the ball) are all innocent."Stepdad Michael Clifton said Michael had been shopping earlier in the day before the tragedy and had bought a slow cooker as a present for Mother's Day."We were out doing shopping - we had just bought his mother a Mother's Day present."It's the last thing he'll ever carry."Mr Clifton said he had been told another similar homemade device had been in the community previously.He said Michael had been bullied in the neighbourhood for about three years."He would come home sometimes and he had been in fights with other kids and he's come home angry ... because no one liked him and they just kept treating him like crap."One of them didn't like him and this is what happens."Mr Clifton said he did not know the 17-year-old accused of throwing the device and had not spoken to Michael's school about the bullying."We never thought it would come to this," he said.Mr Clifton said there had been bullying on Facebook in the past "and we put a stop to it, straight up."He said his son did not have the "wherewithal" to make a bomb."He never learnt anything about that and we monitor his Internet."Mr Clifton said he was told people in the community knew about the homemade bomb earlier in the day."I'd just like to see justice done," he said."If he has done wrong punish him (the boy who allegedly threw the device)."He has been in trouble with the law heaps of times before and they just don't punish these kids."Michael - who today was in a stable condition in hospital - had just finished Mother's Day shopping with his stepfather yesterday when he went to visit a friend in Dampier St but ended up across the street in another home's backyard.What followed, his family said, was a horrific incident that should never have happened."Some kids had been boasting about this golf ball all morning . . . then they threw it at him," his mother said."He wasn't involved, they weren't his friends."Michael, 15, suffers from autism and Asperger syndrome and attends Ipswich High three days a week."He tries to make friends with these kids but gets bullied," the boy's mum Rebecca said.Mr Clifton said he was still in shock."These teenagers have no moral compass," he said.Michael underwent emergency surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital overnight in the hope of saving part of one of his hands.Three other teens, aged between 15 and 18, were also hurt and taken to Ipswich hospital.Police inspector Keith McDonald said those believed to be involved had not been "forthcoming" in providing information about the incident.The family said they had been wanting to move from the area for years but could not afford to."There are needles in the playground, we don't let our daughter play there anymore," Michael's mum said.They said their home on Light St had been egged and targeted by vandals, with gangs of teens running rampant and little police presence.Describing the boy as having a "heart of gold", his family said they were horrified, unsure what to do next.Police investigations are continuing. The girl, who was described as being from a broken and troubled family, was subjected to sexual abuse over four days after being persuaded to travel with the men to Ipswich in Suffolk in July last year. Mohammed Sheikh, Hamza Ali and Suran Uddin were all convicted of trafficking and sex offences following a trial. Today at Norwich Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Coleman said the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had been left traumatised by the ordeal. Sex offender: Suran Uddin was jailed for 15 years for the abduction and sexual assault of a vulnerable 13-year-old he found on the streets of London along with two other men 'Instead of helping this girl find refuge, you were all intent on sexually exploiting her for your own ends,' he added. 'She was taken to a town she'd never visited, a house she had never been to, in the company of men she had never met. 'All three of you treated her like a piece of meat and passed her about. This happened over four days until she was finally rescued by police.' Uddin was jailed for 15 years, Sheikh will serve eight years and Ali five years. All three were placed on the sex offenders register and Sheikh and Ali could face deportation to Somalia, their home country. Jurors heard how the men took advantage of the girl's 'youth and naivety' to persuade her to get into a van, driven by Uddin. They took her to a house in Chevallier Street, Ipswich. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones said: 'They plied her with drugs and alcohol and made promises that they would take care of her and give her anything she wanted. 'She was treated as little more than a skivvy and she was raped over the course of four days.' Maria Denine, mitigating for Sheikh said the defendants had not been aware of her background or how vulnerable she was. Mitigating for Uddin, Scott Ivill said his client was married with two children, aged eight and one, and any custodial sentence would cause his family to suffer. Lindsay Cox, for Ali, said his client was also a married man. He added: 'This girl looked appreciably older than her age and she had a history of engaging with strangers.' Uddin, 26, of Bethnal Green, London; Sheikh, 32, of Hackney, London; and Ali, 39, of Waltham Forest, London, were all found guilty of conspiracy to traffic in the UK. They warned the 32-year-old helicopter technician she would not be allowed to fly unless she took off her combat fatigues and wore a sleep suit instead. She had worn her uniform without any problems on a Virgin flight from America to Britain the week before. The incident happened as she waited for her return flight to Los Angeles from Heathrow on Monday. She was confronted by a G4S security guard and Virgin Atlantic staff, who ordered her to change into pyjamas before boarding the jet. They told her - wrongly - that it was the company's policy not to allow military personnel to travel in uniform. In emails sent to a civilian friend, Petty Officer Howse, from Ipswich, Suffolk, said: 'It was horrific. I was made to feel uncomfortable in my own country for wearing the uniform I wear to defend the place. It made me ashamed of my country that a British serviceman can't travel in uniform. I was so distressed.' The Royal Navy engineer was forced to change into a Virgin Atlantic sleep suit for the duration of the flight She told her friend: 'It started at check-in. Some G4S security guy gave me the third degree about travelling in uniform. I was fuming. He was rude, he wouldn't let the check-in girl give me my passport. 'I was shaking with rage. I thought it was all done. But when I got to the departure gate I was taken to the side by the flight supervisor and they said I wasn't allowed to fly in uniform and had to wear a sleep suit. I then stood feeling completely humiliated with other passengers, clearly curious as to what was going on, staring at me, waiting for him to come back with the black pyjamas. 'I asked if it was Virgin policy, they said "Yes". 'To clarify, a British airline who claims to be Britain's flag carrier won't allow a member of Britain's armed forces to travel on their airline in uniform.' Armed Forces rules state that a serviceman or woman can wear their uniforms voluntarily from their 'residence to place of duty, irrespective of whether they travel by public or private transport, or on foot.' Colonel Richard Kemp, who led British forces in Afghanistan, said: 'This is an insult to the Royal Navy and to the British armed forces who the Queen's uniform represents. 'This naval engineer has volunteered to serve and to fight for her country. How dare Virgin Atlantic and G4S treat her like dirt?' Tory MP Patrick Mercer, a former infantry officer, said: 'Our soldiers, sailors and airmen risk their lives so that firms like Virgin Atlantic can operate and make money. 'It is nothing short of disgraceful that they don't receive the proper respect due to their uniform.'
