Durant Pledges $1M To Tornado Relief

By Sekou Smith

"HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS - Not that anyone needed another reason to root for Kevin Durant, but the Oklahoma City Thunder star has pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross, through his foundation, to the tornado disaster relief effort in Oklahoma City.

The American Red Cross announced the gift earlier today and made clear that the donation from the Durant Family Foundation is meant to match other donations while also serving as an incentive to others willing to donate either by texting "REDCROSS" to 90999 or through the American Red Cross Website.

A Washington D.C. native, Durant has embraced (and been embraced by) Oklahomans like no other athlete in the state. This donation at such a time of need for so many will only serve to strengthen that bond.

It's also a reminder that some stars are worth more than every penny a franchise is willing to pay them. Kudos to Durant and the Thunder for stepping up when Oklahomans need it most.

The best part is Durant always does the right thing by his community and never courts the publicity that comes along with it. Good for him and our thoughts and prayers here at the hideout are with the folks affected by this tragedy."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2328187/Richard-Christie-beat-ex-soldier-Bill-Hopkins-badly-died-caught-victim-ripped-glove-hand-attack-giving-police-DNA-match.html

Granddaughter helps trap mugger who beat ex-soldier, 78, so badly he almost died by finding attacker's glove to provide police with DNA

:Bill Hopkins, 79, suffered broken jaw during attack in Digbeth, Birmingham
:Richard Christie, 48, punched and kicked him in the head before fleeing
:Police traced him after Mr Hopkins managed to tear away his glove
:Jailed for nine years at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday

A granddaughter helped catch a mugger who beat a former soldier so viciously he almost died by finding the attacker's glove which was torn off in the attack.

Bill Hopkins, 79, suffered a broken jaw and was treated in hospital for two days following the unprovoked attack outside his home in Digbeth, Birmingham, last November.

His granddaughter Alana Kurila, 24, found the mugger's glove in his front garden and police were able to extract the attacker's DNA from it. Bill joked: 'She likes to be called Miss Marple now.'

Mugger Richard Christie, 48, was today jailed for nine years following the horrific attack

He pounced on the pensioner from behind, repeatedly punching and kicking him in the head before fleeing with his wallet containing just lb40 and a memorial card from Mr Hopkins' late wife's funeral.

Christie, from Sugden Grove, Highgate, admitted robbery at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday.

Ex-serviceman Mr Hopkins, who served in Borneo in the 1950s, woke up bleeding on the pavement following the attack just yards from his home on Gooch Street.

The great-grandfather was left particularly distraught because his injuries forced him to miss a Remembrance Day parade for the first time since serving overseas.

Detective Constable Lee Dawson, from West Midlands Police, described the mugging as a 'vicious, unprovoked attack.'

He added: 'The whole community were understandably outraged at the severity of the attack.

'We hope the sentence offers reassurance that we will do everything within our power to bring criminals to justice.'

Speaking after the court hearing, Bill said: 'I'm glad justice has been served and Christie is behind bars.

'Thankfully I've recovered from what he did to me. It hasn't put me off going outside or anything.

'I'm just glad he is in prison and cannot hurt anybody else. Both my family and I are pleased with the sentence.

'We also can't thank the police enough. They did a fantastic job catching Christie.'

Speaking shortly after the attack, Mr Hopkins' daughter Pat Kurila had broken down during a police press conference saying she feared her father might die such was the severity of his beating.

The 52-year-old teaching assistant, from Highgate, Birmingham, said: 'We could have been burying him. Whoever did this is the lowest of the low.'

Initially police believed the mugger had followed Mr Hopkins' home from a Ladbrokes in the Arcadian Centre, where he had won the lb40.

He was pinned down and attacked outside his house at around 8pm and later spent two days in hospital.

Mr Hopkins, who did his National Service in Germany and Malaya with the 11th Hussars, had said after the attack: 'The thing that most annoyed me was that I couldn't go to the remembrance parade on the Sunday as I do every year.'

Ice Hockey Ref Replaced With Commentator

Hit at .56 sec

Commentator Stephen White has taken getting close to the action to a
new extreme by deputising as referee in an Australian Ice Hockey league
match at the Docklands Icehouse.

Proving that it is not just players who have to be tough in
ice hockey, a linesman copped a big hit when crunched between burly
Melbourne Ice defender Chris 'The Tank' Frank, Newcastle North Stars
forward Beau Taylor, and the Icehouse boards.

As the dazed whistleblower slowly left the ice to warm
applause - he suffered mild concussion and a deep laceration to an index
finger in the collision - few in the near-capacity crowd would have
realised that his replacement would come from the rinkside commentary
booth.Into the breach stepped White, who had been calling the high-paced
action for ATC Productions, which provides the telecasts of AIHL games
for Fox Sports and live feeds on the internet.
Fortunately, White had some protective gear and skates with him, as
he was scheduled to play a reserves match immediately after the big
game. But he didn't have a referee outfit, which meant the
"half-unconscious" official had to be divested of his pants and shirt.

The result wasn't a snug fit for White, who says he looked
like something out of "South Central LA" in the bigger man's outfit.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/story/_/id/9279942/iran-crushes-us-6-1-wrestling-exhibition-new-york-grand-central-terminal

Iran's wrestling team visited the United States for the first time in a decade and found a virtual home meet. The
fans waving Iranian flags and stomping on the temporary bleachers were
treated to a show of dominance by the wrestling power Wednesday in the
exhibition at Grand Central Terminal. Iran beat the Americans 6-1."It's
typical Iranian. Wherever we go, they do the same thing," two-time
world champion Mehdi Taghavi Kermani said through a translator after
winning his match at 145 1/2 pounds. The fans' chanting and
horn-blowing echoed off the intricate patterns on the ceiling high above
and through the curtains separating Vanderbilt Hall from the commuters
rushing home to the suburbs. The event dubbed "The Rumble on the Rails"
marked the fourth straight year a New York City landmark was transformed
into a wrestling meet to raise money for charity, with the last two in
Times Square. But this one took on added significance beyond
supporting wrestling nonprofit Beat the Streets. In February, the
International Olympic Committee recommended that the sport be dropped
starting with the 2020 Games. So there were the United States,
Iran and Russia all together Wednesday, hoping the IOC takes to heart
the symbolism of the three nations peacefully sharing a wrestling mat.
The Americans swept five freestyle matches from the Russians later in
the day.Iran also will face the U.S. in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Wrestling
is now one of eight sports seeking to fill one spot in the 2020
Olympics. The IOC board will meet May 29 in Russia to recommend a short
list, with the final decision in September."This is what we're
trying to do right now," said 22-year-old Kyle Dake, who could be an
American star of the 2020 Olympics. "This is how we're going to save
Olympic wrestling."The youngster was the lone bright spot for the
U.S. against Iran. At 163 pounds, he beat veteran Hassan Tahmasebi,
who's almost 10 years older, in his first major senior-level
international match. In March, Dake became the first wrestler to
win NCAA titles in four weight classes. College wrestling uses
folkstyle, and Dake hadn't competed in freestyle in more than a year
before Wednesday. Both his periods were scoreless and went to a leg
clinch, and he won the first despite losing the ball draw."It was really loud in there. Feels like we were in Tehran," he joked. "What's going on? Where's our USA folks?"

They
got going chanting "U-S-A U-S-A!!" during the Americans' second meet of
the day. Some of the top U.S. wrestlers, including Olympic champ Jordan
Burroughs, took the mat against Russia, which did not send its best
lineup. Burroughs remained undefeated, though he needed three periods to
beat Saba Khubetzhty at 163 pounds and cracked a molar in a headlock."I had a filling in this tooth, and it's somewhere out there on the mat," he said with a laugh.

These past couple of years, I hate certain "statements / comments" ... most of them are used by women, and all of these are from the "Twilight" movie series. I actually liked the first twilight movie, but then the series became "Twat-light". Bunch of twats running around and flying with super powers, with 30+ year California blondes cheering for them with panties soaked to the bone.

One particular line I hated was when "Bella" calls her mom, and mom says "I literally repel technology now." First time I heard my friendly over weight California blonde friend say it, I gave her a look (Some thing like this : o.0 ) and moved on.

But when several people started repeating that....

Anyway, need to focus away from ranting at Twat... errrr Twilight and Chubby Blondes.

Being a MSEE and working with technology all my life, I abhor people who don't take the time to understand basics. Its not complicated, and saying "Math is tough!" is NEVER cool! If a 10 year old can do it, then so can you.

So when the time came for my parents to try the new gifts I sent them, I was a bit apprehensive, but overall a little confident that Dad could figure it out.

A bit of a background : Dad holds a MSEE too, and worked as a Navy officer then a Senior Director for a Defense company. The guy has the Macguyver touch towards fixing everything. Yes, it was never polished and finely done, but he knew how to use every tool, fix everything. Right from shoes to refrigerators to complicated Nuclear submarines.

Ergo, the "high expectations".

So it starts off with them getting the gifts, which include computing, home entertainment, communication, and cooking products - all electronic. All purchased in the US, consequently 110V rated. I purchased them a AC to AC transformer and wrote down the operation on paper and made an instructional video (look up my channel) on how to use it.

So first night the gifts come in, Dad is missing the only component : a plug adapter : which converts an American Male plug to an Indian Male, so it can fit the Indian female wall socket. I calmly explain that ONLY the laptop's power cord can be directly fitted to the wall socket, since it is rated from 100v to 250V and all the rest need to be plugged to a power strip which is sourced from the AC to AC transformer.

I know Dad. If you cross the thought process of a mule with a heavy load climbing a steep slope and a 100 lb German Shepherd being taken to a bath and mix in the emotions of 50,000 sheep being taught the alphabet at MIT's space research laboratory, you will get to around 1/100th part of the obstinacy that my dad was inherently born with. And that obstinacy has exponentially grown over time. It is now to the extent, that if he visits a hospital, all women in labor need to have C-Sections since his mere presence affects the babies and makes them obstinate enough to not come out on their own.

Dad got the power adapter, which they call "China plug" in India, and then did not call me. He wanted to prove to Mom he could do it all by himself, and he started his engineering efforts brilliantly.

Literally.

He plugged in a D-Link wireless router (Priced at $55) directly to the wall, and made sparks to fly, as the 240V power fried the innards mercilessly. He was proceeding to test certain theories on the Cordless home phone system with multiple hand sets, when unluckily I called.

What could have been an interesting series of pops, crackles and a nice smell of ozone in the air was cut short, since I demanded he cease and desist.

Of course his comment was I had sent garbage, which was already damaged on arrival. And he proceeded to prove his theory by throwing an expensive piece of electronic equipment to the wall.

As per my Dad, violence always serves as a statement of truth. It was nary a week I had welts on my back where he had severely thrashed me, since I was playing cricket in the apartment grounds, instead of studying for my 4th grade exams. But thats a different story.

Mom was a nervous wreck, and there was a happy yelling match in progression when I interrupted. Now the funniest thing was: since we were on video chat on skype, and they were sharing one head set, it escaped their angry minds that if I am saying some thing, then it is being heard by only the person with the head set on his/hear ears. So naturally every time either assumed that the other MUST have heard what I said and proceeded to rant loudly at the other when the other goofed and did not follow the instructions given by me.

They made things a bit more interesting by putting things down and then promptly forgetting where they had put it. And with the tempers flaring, they rapidly forget the statements I had said, or jumbled them up.

This went on through three 45 minute skype calls, and I kid you not, even as a healthy young man, I had chest pains after every call!

Finally on the 4th call, I asked mom to put everything aside and write down what ever I said. I went through some basic electrical engineering, explaining DC and AC electricity, transformers, switches, etc.

In so far, 3 pieces of rather expensive electronic items have been destroyed. And I shudder to think what will happen next when we finish the first step of connecting the damn pre configured IBM Laptop to the internet and move to the home phone system or the entertainment system.

Bottom line : Don't give your parents technology, give them cash!

Save Our Democracy:Buy the LA Times for $660 Million

The Other 98%, a group loosely associated with Occupy Wall Street, is trying to raise enough cash to outbid Rupert Murdoch and the Koch brothers in their efforts to buy the Tribune Company, owner of the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and The Baltimore Sun, among other newspapers.

Yes, these pro-democracy activists are calling for a "people's peaceful takeover" of what appears to be all of the company's media assets, including commuter tabloids and 23 television stations. According to the Tribune Company's website, its television operations reach 80 percent of households with a TV.

As would be expected, the only people who appear to have a serious interest in buying the company are right-wing billionaires. Murdoch, the founder of Fox News, is in competition with the Koch brothers, the men who bankrolled the tea party and Citizens United, the 2010 Supreme Court ruling that enabled corporations to make unlimited campaign contributions. Bids are reported to be in the realm of $660 million.

If 30 million Americans donated just $22, The Other 98% could match that amount. However, as the young woman in the video below says, some Americans, including celebrities who profess to have liberal politics, are capable of donating many times that. By the time of this posting, at least one person had pledged $10,000.

Are these activists "tilting at corporate windmills"? We'll know in 30 days, when the fundraising period is over. Regardless of the outcome, they're to be commended for making a bold and creative populist effort in the name of democracy, as is any American who joins them.

Make a contribution here . If they don't raise enough cash, they say you'll get your money back.

A five-year-old boy has become a global sensation after he was photographed stepping in to break up a heated row between his coach and the referee during a mini-league football match.
When angry words broke out between a coach who took exception to the ref's decision during a game in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria -- young Alejandro Rodriguez Macias stepped in.
"A fight started between the ref and the coach," said Alejandro. "So I put myself between them and said 'stop mister' and they moved apart."
"I just wanted to play football," said the pint-sized player from the Unio Viera league.
The moment he stepped between the two grown men and pushed them apart with his hands was captured on camera by a parent watching from the sidelines.

Tennis Player Viktor Troicki's Meltdown: Argues With Chair Umpire At Italian Open

Viktor Troicki was so sure that his shot in the second set landed in bounds that he nearly quit his second-round match of the Italian Open against Ernests Gulbis on Wednesday.

After losing the first set 6-1 and facing a break point in the first game of the second set, the Serbian hit a cross-court backhand that was ruled out by chair umpire Cedric Mourier. Troicki appealed and Mourier ran over to the spot to confirm his ruling, but that didn't satisfy the 27-year-old.

Troicki hopped over the net, looked at the spot and proceeded to throw a tantrum.

"No, come on. You know you're wrong! Come on, you know you're wrong!" he said. "You called it and now you don't want to overrule yourself. Come on there is no space. You know there is no space. Come on now I don't want to play like this."

Troicki continued to argue with the Mourier and even dragged the cameraman to the spot, presumably to prove to the viewers that he was correct.
