Inglewood police don't know what drove the man to smash the windows of eight patrol cars in the lot at the police station on Saturday and then threaten an officer with the 18-inch blade. In the video, the man can be seen walking toward a cop taking cover behind the door of a squad car. Shots ring out, and the man crumples to the ground. The man was taken to a hospital and died during surgery, police told the Los Angeles Times. The Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance identified the man as Charles Curl, 46, of Los Angeles. Law enforcement expert Richard Lichten told the station the video didn't tell the whole story. The tape was inside a battered orange Peugeot 106 Adebolajo had desperately been trying to sell for as little as lb125 in the days leading up to the attack. He was shot by officers after the atrocity in Woolwich but survived. He and fellow suspect Michael Adebowale were in a stable condition under armed guard in hospital last night. A 29-year-old man was also being quizzed over conspiracy to commit murder. Journey of the Soul after Death is available on Islamic websites for lb4. It is said to be a "detailed account of the different stages of the journey of the soul in light of the Quran". "Particular reference is made to one's worldly actions and the eternal destination of the hereafter," the tape's online description adds. Adebolajo and Adebowale allegedly used a blue Vauxhall Tigra he also owned to run over Lee, of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, on Wednesday. The soldier was then butchered in the street. Adebolajo was filmed after the atrocity wielding a knife and cleaver, saying: "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you" and "you and your kids will be next". The Daily Mirror discovered the 12-year-old Peugeot parked near his sister Blessing's home in Romford, East London, with the Islamic tape still inside. Police were informed of the car's existence and it was taken away to be searched. It was taxed for six months on April 30 this year in Lincoln, close to where Adebolajo's family live. He had been trying to convince a male neighbour of Blessing to buy the car for lb125 just days before the attack. The neighbour, who did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals, said: "At first he wanted lb420 for it but by the end he was desperate and said I could have it for lb125." His last text message to the neighbour was sent at 9.39am on April 25. The neighbour, who did not buy the car, said: "He was very down in the dumps recently. I saw him pacing up and down the street. "He wasn't going anywhere in particular. He was just walking back and forward. He seemed agitated, as if he had something playing on his mind. "When I saw him on the news I was absolutely shocked. I recognised his blue car first, and then saw the video of him. I recognised his voice and knew it was him. I couldn't believe it." Hairdresser Justine Rigden, 26, who dated Adebolajo when they were in their teens, said he was then an aspiring rapper who showed no signs of being violent or fanatical. Model Justine, of Hornchurch, East London, said: "He was really friendly and really polite and there was never anything to suggest he would be caught up with anything like this. "He was just a lovely, polite boy. He stayed at my family's house and I stayed with his. He was a very family-oriented person. "He had a group of friends from Hackney. They weren't wrong uns, they were OK and he used to do a bit of MC-ing, rapping. "Nobody can believe it. He was just this normal, regular boy." Childhood friends of Adebolajo, a Briton of Nigerian descent who was born in Lambeth, South London, said he became interested in Islam aged 15 having been raised as a Christian. They said his parents became so worried they moved him from their home in Romford, Essex, in the hope of protecting him from being radicalised. One of his best friends at school was a British soldier. Kirk Redpath, who joined the Irish Guards as a drummer, was killed in Iraq in 2007. Adebolajo is said to have formally converted to Islam in 2003, when he started using the name Mujahid. A friend from Marshalls Park school in Romford said: "He was a Christian, a nice, normal guy. All his friends used to go to each other's houses all the time. "He started getting involved with Islam aged about 15 or 16, and that is why his parents moved him away out of the area. Is America ready for pat-downs at every event?" If this all sounds like you woke up in some real-life science fiction fantasy, allow me to bring you up to speed. Towards the beginning of May, an Austin-based 3D printing group known as Defense Distributed announced it was in its final stages of testing their coup de gr^ace, a functional firearm produced almost entirely out of plastic parts manufactured by a 3D printer, which the group named the "Liberator." On May 6, the group began distributing schematics for the single-shot pistol freely online, allowing anyone connected to the Internet to download them from anywhere in the world. The deliberately open nature of the gun's files led the State Department to issue a take-down notice to the group later that week claiming they had violated firearms export laws. However, the State Department was a day late and a dollar short as the files had already gone viral and by that time were already downloaded over 100,000 times . Additionally, the DHS memo obtained by Fox specifically mentions Defense Distributed by name. A section of the memo is even dedicated to their Liberator gun design, stating: "Magnetometers may fail to detect the Liberator, depending on device sensitivity. Though it is prohibited by federal law, manufacturers may deliberately omit the unnecessary metal insert, leaving only a small nail and ammunition as the sole metal component. Future designs could further reduce or eliminate metal entirely. "Unqualified gun seekers may be able to acquire or manufacture their own Liberators with no background checks." As Fox News reports, the DHS bulletin also warned "the firearms can be made without serial numbers or unique identifiers, hindering ballistics testing," and that as 3D printers inevitably become more affordable, "even more sophisticated printed guns will become easier to acquire." Last week, UK newspaper The Daily Mail claimed to have "exposed" the "massive international security risk" of 3D guns when they cheekily produced their own plastic weapon and sneaked it on board a Eurostar train. Several of the paper's readers, however, saw through their cunning ploy, noting they produced the firearm without the necessary metal firing pin, and didn't attempt to smuggle ammunition. "Yes - but did your intern manage to get any bullets on the train... no. Typical DM nonsense!," one savvy reader commented on their website. Even prior to its creation, the 3D printed gun had its fair share of political opponents. In December, Democrat NY Rep. Steve Israel called for the urgent renewal of legislation banning undetectable firearms set to expire at the end of this year. "With the advent of 3-D printers these guns are suddenly a real possibility, but the law Congress passed is set to expire next year. We should act now to give law enforcement authorities the power to stop the development of these weapons before they are as easy to come by as a Google search," Rep. Israel stated in a press release on his House site . Also, following the release and proliferation of the Liberator gun files, notorious gun grabber Sen. There can be no justification for a murderous attack on an individual soldier in the streets of London. It must have been awful too for the local people who witnessed it. Unlike with most terrorist attacks or indeed other crimes, we have been able to see film footage of the perpetrators, hear testimony from the witnesses who saw or talked to them. So we know what these men say motivated them. They claimed that the killing of the soldier was in response to the killing of Muslims by British soldiers in other countries. One said that the government did not care for people and should get the troops out. The Boston bombers last month were supposedly similarly motivated. The Woolwich attack, carried out by two men now shot and wounded and under arrest in hospital, appears to represent a phenomenon that was pointed out nearly a decade ago by the security services in Britain: that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq would lead to a growing threat of terrorism in Britain. Those of us in Stop the War have long predicted that these sorts of attacks would happen because of the war on terror. Unfortunately there is little sign that the government, media and military will draw any of the conclusions that they should from the attack. The instant response was to brand it as a serious terrorist attack, although already many commentators are saying they believe it more likely that this was a one off and isolated incident, and unlikely to be part of a wider conspiracy. David Cameron cut short a visit to Paris in order to fly home. This reaction is one which manifestly fails to deal with the political causes underlying such attacks. The simple truth is that there were no such cases in Britain before the start of the 'war on terror' in 2001, which led to the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. The consequences of those wars have been devastating for the people of those countries and further afield. Up to a million died in Iraq and 4 million were made refugees. Tens of thousands have died in Afghanistan. Fighting still continues and in Iraq looks like descending into civil war in some parts of the country. The US and its allies have been involved in bombing attacks on these countries which have been responsible for many thousands of deaths. A media comment that this was the day Baghdad came to the streets of Britain shows a grotesque ignorance of the country the invasion was meant to rescue for democracy, where daily sectarian bombings and killings are escalating on a scale not dreamt of in this country. The interventions have spread in the name of 'fighting terrorism': drone attacks are taking place in a number of countries including Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. The bombing of Libya by the west in 2011 led to at least 30,000 dead. British troops are aiding the French in Mali. The British are intervening in the war in Syria for their own ends, and want to lift the EU arms embargo there in order to escalate the war and achieve regime change. The US and EU continues to back Israel despite its treatment of the Palestinians, even sending the architect of the Iraq war, Tony Blair, as envoy for peace in the Middle East. Any rational balance sheet of the last decade and more would demonstrate that the war on terror has been a failure in its own terms. It has not prevented terrorism but caused it to spread. The failure of politicians and military to face up to this has further damaging consequences: if the government refuses to change its own policy it has one simple solution -- 'blame the Muslims'. Muslims are expected to condemn any such attack whereas no such demand is put upon people of other faiths when a killing is carried out by Christians. Muslim is also equated with black or Asian, as when one television reporter described the men as of 'Muslim appearance'. Again, atrocities by white gun men, in Norway and the US for example, which are often highly politically motivated, are not regarded as needing to be defined by race. They are also rarely described as terrorism, but as the acts of fanatics or madmen. It is an integral part of the war on terror that the invasion and occupation of mainly Muslim countries abroad has to lead to the dehumanising of the victims of the wars: so Muslim comes to equal extremist and terrorist. Racists like the EDL turned up in Woolwich to try to further foster Islamophobia. But this treatment of Muslims goes to the top of government and is spewed out daily in the press. Similar views of the Irish were much more common in the 1970s and 80s when the IRA had a major bombing campaign in Britain. In the end there had to be a political solution which recognised genuine grievance. In the end there has to be a political solution to terrorism. But it can only start with recognition of the disastrous effect of western foreign policy in the Middle East and South Asia for decades now, exacerbated by the consequences of 12 years of wars.
