In an interview conducted via Skype in the early hours of May 14 al Hamad explained to TIME what caused him to cut out the soldier's organs: "We opened his cell phone and I found a clip of a woman and her two daughters fully naked and he was humiliating them, and sticking a stick here and there." The video, a 27-second clip in which al Hamad brandishes organs that appear to be the lungs and heart of the Syrian soldier who lies dead at al Hamad's feet, was first seen by two TIME reporters in April. A few weeks later TIME obtained a copy. Though we had been told by witnesses to the filming that the video was legitimate, we set about authenticating its content, aware of the potential that it could have been faked for propaganda purposes. The city of 200,000 has transformed both ethnically and religiously over the years so that 30% of its people are now classified as Asian and another 10% as black. Religiously 25% are Muslim while 47% identify culturally as Christian. Although Asian Muslims are a significant minority in Luton it is quite stunning to learn that they are so influential on the schools system, imposing tenants of Islamic faith on all pupils. Because of the activism of Sharia law advocates many institutions, not just schools, simply wave the white flag and make all their meat purchases halal. In order to be considered halal, a meat must come from an animal whose throat is slit, with the blood draining out leading to death. Supposedly the animal must be stunned first, but religious slaughter houses are exempt. Animal rights groups and others have complained about the inhumane methods used. After slightly wounding the United States Ambassador and the Belgian Charge d'Affaires, the terrorists took these officials plus the United States DCM, the Saudi Arabian Ambassador and the Jordanian Charge d'Affaires hostage. Information acquired subsequently reveals that the Fatah/BSO leaders did not expect Awadh to be freed, and indicates that one of the primary goals of the operation was to strike at the United States because of its efforts to achieve a Middle East peace settlement which many Arabs believe would be inimical to Palestinian interests. Negotiations with the BSO terrorist team were conducted primarily by the Sudanese Ministers of Interior and of Health. No effort was spared, within the capabilities of the Sudanese Government, to secure the freedom of the hostages. The terrorists extended their deadlines three times, but when they became convinced that their demands would not be met and after they reportedly had received orders from Fatah headquarters in Beirut, they killed the two United States officials and the Belgian Charge. Only to take it all back in the very next line. "Two U.S. officials say he had no tie to terrorist groups." The AP's "story" about the mysterious "Misha" was 1145 words, long enough for an editor to squeeze in a caveat. "It was not immediately clear whether the FBI has spoken to Misha or was attempting to," the national wire service reported. "Efforts over several days by The Associated Press to identify and interview Misha have been unsuccessful." The big difference: when you do it, its conspiracy theory. When we do it, its informed speculation.In any other context, this might be seen as the rankest kind of "conspiracy theory." But, apparently, when the Associated Press does it, its news.
