Over the past two years, the president has made critical policy decisions that have enhanced Israel's security. Now, it is my hope that the president will use his upcoming trip not only to meet our political leaders, but to forge a bond with the people of Israel. The best way to do this is to finally pardon Jonathan Pollard , a U.S. citizen convicted of spying for Israel, and allow him to come home to Israel ahead of the presidential visit in March. This would not only right an historic wrong, but will also serve to remove an unfortunate stain from an otherwise close American-Israeli relationship.Earlier in his presidency, Obama made a number of decisions that some of us felt were not helpful in terms of our geopolitical standing and strengthening our negotiating position with our neighbors. Thankfully, during the second half of his first term it seems that he began to chart a new course. The Obama administration stood resolutely by Israel's side at the United Nations as the Palestinians attempted to nullify our signed agreements by forcing a vote on unilateral statehood. Similarly he has joined the US congress in placing - and enforcing - biting sanctions that are aimed at curtailing the Iranian nuclear program. Nevertheless, the feeling persisted here that President Obama has not connected with Israelis on a visceral and emotional level. While the steps the president has taken over the past two years have helped reassure leaders in Israel about the president's intentions, a pardon for Jonathan Pollard would go a long way in showing the Israeli people where his heart lays.Many question the necessity of the president of the United States emotionally connecting with the Israeli electorate. After all, they do not elect the president and he does not report to them. On the other hand, Obama's predecessors -- from both American political parties -- understood that if they want Israel to trust them on matters of grave importance such as the very survival of the Jewish State, then a strong connection must be sustained with the people of Israel. By inviting Ilan Ramon to partake in a NASA mission Bill Clinton further solidified an already strong bond that he had built with the Israeli people and George W. Bush was well aware of the significance of his two visits to Israel while we were celebrating sixty years of our independence. These presidents understood that if they were going to ask Israel to trust the U.S. on the most important matters of national security then they must set the right tone through significant gestures to create good will.Jonathan Pollard has been imprisoned for almost twenty eight years. It is now clear that in passing information to an American ally about dangerous nations that threatened Israel's security, Pollard thought he was acting in the best interests of both nations. More importantly, experts including former senior cabinet ministers and a large number of senators and congressmen, now agree that the punishment of a life sentence that Pollard received was disproportionate to the charges for which he pleaded guilty. Even former CIA Director James Woolsey has said "There is absolutely no reason for Pollard to be imprisoned substantially longer than spies from other friendly, allied and neutral countries."I understand that a decision by President Obama to pardon Pollard and release him from prison will not be without controversy. But I urge Americans to consider the positive effects this act will achieve. Not only will this be an act of justice and compassion by the President, but I know for a fact that it will be universally applauded by regular Israelis. Not all Israelis understand fully what Pollard did and many criticize his actions, but there is wide agreement that the time has come to end this saga and relegate it to the past. O pinion polls in Israel show few issues of mass agreement stronger than the country's call for Jonathan Pollard to be freed now.I do not pretend that all disagreements between our two governments will vanish with Pollard's release. We sometimes differ with the Obama administration on a range of policies; from what is the best way to restart the peace process to how urgently the world must act to end Iran's march towards a nuclear bomb. I do know, however, that if President Obama plans on asking the Israeli people to trust him during what promises to be a tumultuous four years, bringing Jonathan home would be a just and noble way to do so. The Democrat-controlled Senate is obstructive and culpable for not adhering to the rule of law and enforcing the Constitution. The lame street press has willfully ignored and even tried to divert attention from facts which attest to the cover-up which have been perpetuated by the Administration. The specifics include the following most egregious (but by no means all) violations: 1. Election fraud and manipulation in 2008 and 2012 including ACORN's involvement in the 2010 census, conveyance of funds to ACORN by the Administration in blatant disregard for Congressional deauthorization of such funding due to proven fraud, and the DOJ's unwillingness to prevent tyranny at polling places by groups such as the New Black Panthers. And these are just a few examples. 2. Criminal misuse of taxpayer TARP funds for political payback. 3. Willful disregard for enforcement of existing Federal immigration laws and our borders. 4. 'Fast and Furious' gunrunning to Mexican drug cartels, known by the DOJ, as a ploy to eventually wage war against our Second Amendment rights. 5. Disregard for DOMA which IS Federal law passed by the Congress under President Clinton. 6. Passage of the NDAA which does not prohibit Obama's Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State from denying Americans their basic constitutional rights of habeas corpus and posse Comitatus. 7. Aiding and abetting our enemies through security leaks to the New York Times and Islamic groups resulting in the deaths of Navy SEALS shot down over Pakistan, and imprisonment of a doctor who was an informant leading to Bin Laden's supposed death. 8. Appointment of unconstitutional Czars to administer Obama's ideology of destruction of American liberties and federal government control of the American people in all ways possible---Obamacare; EPA targets of industry and private citizens; tax schemes to enrich the powerful elite; holding a corrupt United Nations agenda of universal control and tyrannical laws above the U.S. Constitution (specifically regarding our Second Amendment rights and energy security). 9. Benghazi: Supplying Islamic groups with weapons to overthrow their regimes (the 'Arab Spring') while ignoring the safety of our military and CIA officials resulting in their deaths at the hands of Islamic terrorists---then conducting a massive ATTEMPTED cover up of Obama's real agenda which was to place his reelection as a priority over the safety of Americans, while imprisoning someone who produced an irrelevant and unknown video as the scapegoat for the Admininstration's agenda (and he still has not been released!). 10. Violating the First Amendment through IRS abuse of citizens and businesses based on their political views. 11. Spying on the AP thereby illegally threatening the freedom of the press. Hersh March 5, 2007 The New Yorker In the past few months, as the situation in Iraq has deteriorated, the Bush Administration, in both its public diplomacy and its covert operations, has significantly shifted its Middle East strategy. The "redirection," as some inside the White House have called the new strategy, has brought the United States closer to an open confrontation with Iran and, in parts of the region, propelled it into a widening sectarian conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has co"operated with Saudi Arabia's government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda. One contradictory aspect of the new strategy is that, in Iraq, most of the insurgent violence directed at the American military has come from Sunni forces, and not from Shiites. But, from the Administration's perspective, the most profound-and unintended-strategic consequence of the Iraq war is the empowerment of Iran. Its President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has made defiant pronouncements about the destruction of Israel and his country's right to pursue its nuclear program, and last week its supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on state television that "realities in the region show that the arrogant front, headed by the U.S. and its allies, will be the principal loser in the region." After the revolution of 1979 brought a religious government to power, the United States broke with Iran and cultivated closer relations with the leaders of Sunni Arab states such as Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. That calculation became more complex after the September 11th attacks, especially with regard to the Saudis. Al Qaeda is Sunni, and many of its operatives came from extremist religious circles inside Saudi Arabia. Before the invasion of Iraq, in 2003, Administration officials, influenced by neoconservative ideologues, assumed that a Shiite government there could provide a pro-American balance to Sunni extremists, since Iraq's Shiite majority had been oppressed under Saddam Hussein. They ignored warnings from the intelligence community about the ties between Iraqi Shiite leaders and Iran, where some had lived in exile for years. Now, to the distress of the White House, Iran has forged a close relationship with the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. The new American policy, in its broad outlines, has been discussed publicly. In testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in January, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that there is "a new strategic alignment in the Middle East," separating "reformers" and "extremists"; she pointed to the Sunni states as centers of moderation, and said that Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah were "on the other side of that divide." (Syria's Sunni majority is dominated by the Alawi sect.) Iran and Syria, she said, "have made their choice and their choice is to destabilize." Some of the core tactics of the redirection are not public, however. The clandestine operations have been kept secret, in some cases, by leaving the execution or the funding to the Saudis, or by finding other ways to work around the normal congressional appropriations process, current and former officials close to the Administration said. A senior member of the House Appropriations Committee told me that he had heard about the new strategy, but felt that he and his colleagues had not been adequately briefed. "We haven't got any of this," he said. "We ask for anything going on, and they say there's nothing. And when we ask specific questions they say, 'We're going to get back to you.' It's so frustrating." The key players behind the redirection are Vice-President Dick Cheney, the deputy national-security adviser Elliott Abrams, the departing Ambassador to Iraq (and nominee for United Nations Ambassador), Zalmay Khalilzad, and Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi national-security adviser. While Rice has been deeply involved in shaping the public policy, former and current officials said that the clandestine side has been guided by Cheney. (Cheney's office and the White House declined to comment for this story; the Pentagon did not respond to specific queries but said, "The United States is not planning to go to war with Iran.") The policy shift has brought Saudi Arabia and Israel into a new strategic embrace, largely because both countries see Iran as an existential threat. They have been involved in direct talks, and the Saudis, who believe that greater stability in Israel and Palestine will give Iran less leverage in the region, have become more involved in Arab-Israeli negotiations. The new strategy "is a major shift in American policy-it's a sea change," a U.S. government consultant with close ties to Israel said. The Sunni states "were petrified of a Shiite resurgence, and there was growing resentment with our gambling on the moderate Shiites in Iraq," he said. "We cannot reverse the Shiite gain in Iraq, but we can contain it." "It seems there has been a debate inside the government over what's the biggest danger-Iran or Sunni radicals," Vali Nasr, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, who has written widely on Shiites, Iran, and Iraq, told me. "The Saudis and some in the Administration have been arguing that the biggest threat is Iran and the Sunni radicals are the lesser enemies. This is a victory for the Saudi line." This one follows some of the trackers as they prep their winter trap lines, cabins, and huts for the coming spring. A lot of really great footage, and interviews on why and how they do what they do. One tracker builds a new set of skis in a very inventive way, using the tools and materials at hand - which, in the Taiga, means an axe and perfectly straight planks split using wooden wedges. The finished skis are lined with the fur and skin from a moose's hindquarters. There's a touching interview with a Russian WWII veteran from the Taiga who simply couldn't continue - reliving the memories was just too much for the old soul. Plus many more interesting moments. Plenty of fishing and building from all of them - Spring and Summer is short in Siberia, but the Winter is long, so everybody rushes to get things in order. Lacking proper insect repellant, the resourceful residents of the Taiga make their own in an ancient manner by producing a tar/oil from birch bark that mosquitoes despise. So the trapper's skis don't get quite finished yet, but they're finished in time for winter.
