A subsidiary of Germany's state railway Deutsche Bahn paid up to EUR315,000 in bribes to Greek officials secure contracts during the construction of the Athens Proastiakos suburban railway, an investigation by a German state prosecutor has revealed.

According to the S"uddeutsche Zeitung daily, the scandal has led the subsidiary, DB International (DBI), to withdraw from Greece and from a number of other countries which it deems are corruption prone, such as Libya, Rwanda and Thailand, where bribes were also paid.

As a result of the scandal, DBI also announced that it has dismissed 30 managers, including the former head of its Greek subsidiary, and is suing ten of them for damages.

DBI has also ordered that its foreign offices are to hold no more than EUR500 in local currency in petty cash at any time and that cash payments of more than EUR100 are banned.

The Frankfurt prosecutors office said it was investigating 37 suspects, almost all former DBI staff.

It said that Lahmeyer, a privately owned engineering firm that had contracts with DBI, has been issued with a EUR600,000 fine for its involvement, with one Lahmeyer employee issued with a EUR30,000 fine.

Jimmy Hoffa's rumored resting places, from the Everglades to the end zone

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC NewsFor a guy who's been dead since 1975, Jimmy Hoffa really gets around.

Through the years, tipsters have insisted the Teamsters boss - who vanished from a suburban Detroit restaurant - was laid to rest in the swamps of Florida, under the artificial turf of Giants Stadium and more than a dozen other spots.

Monday, the feds were digging up a field in Oakland Township, Mich., with new designs on finding Hoffa's remains and solving the mystery of his disappearance.

Here are some of the places where the labor leader has been rumored to be spending eternity:

Giants Stadium: A mob informant told the FBI in 1986 that Hoffa was killed by an Irish gangster in a Detroit suburb and buried in an end zone near section 107 of the football field. Stadium officials said they they dug four feet down while replacing artificial turf and didn't find any trace of Hoffa. The stadium was demolished in 2010.

General Motors' headquarters: Hoffa's onetime driver, Marvin Elkind, told a Canadian journalist that a Detroit mobster revealed the final resting place in 1985 when he walked past the GM building, known as the Renaissance Center, nodded toward the massive foundation and said, "Say good morning to Jimmy Hoffa, boys."

Driveway in Roseville, Mich.: Acting on a tip, authorities used radar last September to inspect the driveway of a private home and saw something that made them want a closer look. Police drilled for soil samples but experts found no sign of human decomposition in the dirt.

Sheraton Hotel on Wilmington Island, Ga.: A Teamsters pension fund owned this property near Savannah when Hoffa vanished, so it's been dogged by rumors that he was laid to rest under the helipad. "It's had a colorful past," a developer who converted it into condos once said.

A dump in Jersey City, N.J.: Authorities spent several days in 1975 digging up a mob-linked waste facility after a tipster claimed Hoffa could be found there, a 55-gallon drum serving as a his coffin. They didn't find anything but animal bones.

Wexler's Tavern in Cleveland: The owner of the watering hole was doing some renovation work last month when he made an intriguing find: bone fragments and a matchbook from the Palm Desert Lodge in California, which had strong ties to Hoffa. But pathologists determined the remains were not human.

Florida Everglades: An ex-hitman who said he was Hoffa's bodyguard told a Senate committee in 1982 that Hoffa's body was ground up and stuffed in a steel drum that was then dumped in the Sunshine State's gator-infested wetlands.

A Japanese-made car: A 2006 book claimed that a convicted hitman confessed before his death that he knifed Hoffa to death, took the body to New Jersey, burned it in a steel barrel, dumped the remains in a car that was compressed into a hunk of metal and sent to Japan to be used in new vehicles, the Detroit News reported.

Incinerator in Hamtramck, Mich.: A Pennsylvania Teamsters official purportedly confessed on his deathbed that he flew to Pontiac, Mich., to collect Hoffa's body from his killers and then had it burned. The same source, Frank Sheeran, supposedly also told an author he shot Hoffa at a Detroit home, but blood found there in 2004 was not a match.

Pool in Hampton Township, Mich.: A convicted murderer who had already led cops to one body in his home claimed they could find Hoffa under an above-ground pool there. So in July 2003, a backhoe dug up the yard while the tipster watched in shackles, but nothing was found.

Tire-shredding plant in Hamtramck, Mich.: A 1978 book posited that Hoffa's corpse was disposed of at Central Sanitation Services, once owned by organized crime figures. The FBI said at the time they looked into that theory and discounted it.

Horse farm in Milford, Mich.: The FBI spent 14 days looking for Hoffa at the 89-acre Hidden Dreams Farm after a 75-year-old prison inmate who once worked there claimed he witnessed the burial. That story, like so many others, turned out to be a pile of manure.

Spies? Saboteurs? Or just tailwatchers?

Satoru Kuba spends parts of most days - and many nights - peering through a telephoto lens atop a three-story building overlooking Kadena Air Base on Okinawa.	The goal of his sometimes-lonely vigil, through weather fair and foul? A photograph of an aircraft - any aircraft - that he has yet to capture on film. He spends so much time there that his young son thinks it's his profession.

Kuba insists he's not a spy. He's a plane spotter, a tail watcher - nicknames for aviation enthusiasts who post up outside Air Force bases around the world to shoot photos and record tail numbers.

Usually there are just a couple hanging around each base. But they show up by the dozens for special events or missions that draw unusual planes, pushing their lenses up to the gaps in chain-link fences topped by barbed wire or climbing stepladders for unobstructed views.

While U.S. Pacific Air Forces won't even discuss them, citing unspecified operational security issues, U.S. Forces Europe has embraced them as a source to spot something else - potential spies and saboteurs.

It's not difficult to see why spotters could be perceived as a concern. They publish their information online, tracking planes from base to base, country to country, continent to continent. Many spotter groups typically have at least one member who owns a frequency scanner that can pick up the base control tower chatter.

Such information became problematic in the U.K. during the Libya campaign in 2011 when British Tornado fighter planes were embarking on bombing sorties from their home bases, said Ben Vogel, an editor at Jane's Defence Weekly.

"The worry was that any Libyan intelligence officer could read these postings and know exactly how many Tornados were coming and pretty much exactly when they would arrive," Vogel told Stars and Stripes in an email.

Information posted by plane spotters also inadvertently exposed the CIA's extraordinary rendition program, according to a series of stories in London's The Guardian newspaper. The stories appeared in 2005-06, when the secret interrogation program became public.

There's a certain irony that, in an effort to be as open to host-nation residents as possible, flightlines often aren't blocked by barriers or lines of trees. Plane spotters can snap photos from outside the base fences that base residents are banned from shooting inside the gates. PACAF won't talk about the discrepancy.

"For operational security reasons, we simply cannot discuss the procedures we have in place," Maj. Alysia Harvey, PACAF spokeswoman, told Stars and Stripes by email.

"However, what I can tell you is that operational security is a priority in the U.S. Air Force," she said. "And military officials work very closely with their counterparts and local authorities to protect the assets, airmen and families at their locations."

Still, plane spotters stick out like sore thumbs to Americans who are inundated with "Eagle Eyes" messages from the Air Force imploring them to report suspicious behavior such as people hanging around outside the wire.

No matter how strange it might seem to others, it's just a hobby for most tail watchers.

"The vast majority of plane spotters are simply flight enthusiasts who enjoy seeing military aircraft not typically seen at commercial airfields," USAFE spokesman Capt. William Russell told Stars and Stripes in an email.

"Military officials have a great relationship with liaison officers and security personnel throughout" Europe, Russell said. "This relationship allows us to mitigate threats to DOD personnel and installations."

USAFE was eager to highlight a program it recently developed in England. It brings tail watchers into the op-sec fold at RAF Lakenheath, a U.S. fighter base outside Cambridge that is home to the 48th Fighter Wing and scores of F-15s.

The "Spotter Watch" program is a joint effort between the Air Force and the local civilian police, who do background checks on the plane spotters. A clean report, and the base issues them registration cards.

"This is an opportunity to build up our op-sec program and involve in it," Lakenheath spokesman Capt. James Nichols said.

The program encourages plane spotters - typically very tight-knit groups - to report dubious characters to the Suffolk Constabulary, which can investigate and inform the base if necessary, Nichols said.

Roughly 50 plane spotters have been vetted for Spotter Watch, which gives them VIP tours of the base and a chance to "pet the jets," Nichols said.

"It's better to co-opt into our program," Nichols said. "It's mutually beneficial; they get to see the things they love, and we get them to help us."

Jeremy Gunner, a former plane spotter who now works at Air Forces Monthly, a U.K.-based aviation magazine, says the symbiotic relationship is long overdue and should be copied across the Air Force, particularly in England and Japan, were the hobby is prolific.

"Most of us know each other," said Gunner, a retired Scotland Yard detective. "You notice someone who doesn't really fit in."

While sitting in a van outside RAF Alconbury - home to the U.S. 423rd Air Base Group - waiting to get a shot of a U-2 spy plane, Gunner and another tail watcher noticed a group of anti-base demonstrators cutting holes in the fence, ostensibly trying to break into the base to protest.

It was Easter Sunday about 20 years ago, Gunner said, and the demonstrators were in costume.

"We were sitting there having a cup of tea when all of sudden we see pink bunnies trying to cut through the fence," Gunner said. He and his cohort called the police "just like most other plane spotters would."

Maintaining the rights of plane spotters - who in many countries where the U.S. Air Force operates are legally permitted to congregate outside the bases and take photos - and the security concerns of the Air Force is a delicate balance, Gunner said.

"A lot of us have been accused of being terrorists," Gunner said. He was been arrested once - by Air Force Security Forces at Pope Air Force Base, S.C. - and has been "questioned lots of times," he said.

"But I know my rights," Gunner said. However, "you should just keep your nose clean and not be a nuisance." Climbing or cutting holes in the fence, for example, not only is poor form but also will attract the authorities, he said.

Still, Gunner said, the information plane spotters use and collect is all public. The UHF frequencies used by Air Force control towers and pilots are published by the U.S. Defense Department and broadcast openly.

"If they didn't want you to hear it, then you wouldn't," Gunner said.

In Japan, not all plane spotters are watching for fun.

Yoichi Endo for years has observed and photographed aircraft coming and going from Yokota Air Base, the suburban Tokyo installation that's home to U.S. Forces Japan and the only U.S. airlift hub in the Pacific.

Endo started in the 1970s while protesting the Vietnam War as a student in Fussa, one of the cities that surrounds the base. He and others participated in demonstrations outside Yokota and even flew kites near the flightline to interfere with the planes.

In 1996 Endo, who by then had been elected to Fussa's city assembly, founded an organization in conjunction with elected officials from other Japanese cities that host U.S. bases. They formed Rimpeace to inform the public about American military activities in their country, he said.

"We provide land and facilities to the U.S. forces and pay a sympathy budget , which uses our taxes," said Endo, who was on the city council from 1979 to 2002. "We the taxpayers have the right to know" what's going on.

That has included watching controversial Osprey aircraft carrying out their first test flights recently at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, said Rimpeace co-founder Jungen Tamura, who serves on the city assembly in Iwakuni.

While U.S. officials insist it's not slated to receive the Osprey despite Japanese media reports to the contrary, Naval Air Facility Atsugi near the country's capital is a popular destination for spotters.

Dozens gathered there on a sunny but cold November day for the return of the fighter jets from the USS George Washington, which have been deployed for months, last screeching over the skies near Atsugi in August, several spotters told Stars and Stripes.

The base "welcomes those with an interest in naval aviation," Atsugi spokesman Greg Kuntz said.

The Navy has no overarching policy on tail watchers, Naval Air Forces spokesman Cmdr. Kevin Stephens told Stars and Stripes in an email.

"We appreciate and share these individuals' love and enthusiasm for Naval aviation," Stephens said.

"So long as tail spotter activities are conducted in accordance with all applicable local laws and ordinances, and with the safety of themselves, the public and our air crews in mind, we are unconcerned with their activities."

Meanwhile, Endo and Tamura insist their group is not aimed at stoking the undercurrent of anti-U.S. military sentiment in Japan nor are they aimed at divulging U.S. military secrets.
Shanty town on a suburban London street: Romanians scrape a living amid squalor of dump.

They could be scenes from the Third World as families eke out a living in makeshift shelters amid the filth of a rubbish dump.

But the extraordinary photographs were taken at the site of a former football ground in a leafy London suburb.

More than 50 Romanians are living in ramshackle huts made from waste wood, rubble and plastic - just yards from playing fields and lb400,000 family homes.

Neighbours: Family homes in the streets surrounding the camp are worth around lb400,000

For more than two years, migrants from the Transylvania region of Romania have been travelling to the site in Hendon as they find work in the capital.

They have forced gaps in a 10ft fence around the site - ignoring warning signs in Romanian - to make their home in the camp despite it having no running water, electricity or sanitation and being next to ever-growing piles of vermin-infested filth.

More... Cashpoint card snatches treble: Romanian crime gangs responsible for 92% of thefts from cash machines, police believe Bin and gone: Driver escapes unhurt after his rubbish truck falls into 12ft crater that opened up on Romanian road It beggars belief! Anger of shopkeepers at Roma gypsies who have set up camp at Marble Arch in London

They scavenge in the rubbish for clothes to wear or for things to sell to buy food.

Britain is expecting an influx of Romanians - and Bulgarians - when they are given free access to our jobs market in January.

Ministers have refused to put an estimate on how many will travel here but campaign group MigrationWatch says it could be 50,000 every year for five years from 2014.

Tiberius Bokor, 26, lives in a 6ft by 12ft 'home' with his wife and four others. He comes from Brasov in Transylvania and earns about lb40 a day as a labourer while his wife, Brittany, 26, who is the only woman in the camp, earns about lb30 a day at a car wash.

'We knew about this place before we travelled to Britain,' he said. 'We came a week ago. When I got here I built this shelter in a day. I am here because I can earn more than I can at home.

'I came here for eight months last year and I think we will be here now for three months. We are always coming back and forth.

'Everyone has children at home that they are trying to provide for.'

Mrs Bokor sends most of her wages home to the couple's two young sons, who are living with family in Romania.

She said: 'We have no fresh water. We can use the water in the park to bathe and wash clothes but we go to Tesco to get drinking water.

'Obviously no one wants to live like this. We have told the council that we are happy to clear the rubbish away but they just want rid of us. The rats are a problem but there is a local cat that helps.'

She said the council should do more 'to make this place safe' and accused the police of 'hassling' them.

Their shelter is split into three areas each with two mattresses. Upturned buckets are used as seats and clothes are kept in bags hung on nails in the wooden walls.

Mrs Bokor, who keeps in touch with her children through Skype, said the council had asked if any of them wanted to go home.

'We all want to see our families but we are here to work,' she said. 'I would love to live in the UK permanently. I would love to have enough money to bring all my family here.'

Gus Bodur, 49, was involved with Hendon FC, who formerly played at the site, and still lives nearby.

He says it's 'heartbreaking' what has happened to the ground. 'The club used to be an important part of the community,' he said.

'These people have been seen arriving at the ground with a map telling them where to go. The site should be cleared and then pulled down. It is a great shame.'

David Haynes, 75, who has lived opposite the site for 40 years, said: 'There started to be a problem with fly-tipping but then the migrants moved in too. Even after the fence was put up there was a problem. The council and the police are not doing enough.'

Barnet Council sold the site to developers last year but still owns the freehold. Legal challenges over its sale have held up development.

A council spokesman said: 'We have been working with the police, the leaseholder and homeless charities to clear the area and repatriate the squatters. Despite repeated attempts to secure the site, it has been illegally re-occupied on at least three occasions.'

Asked if it had considered paying for security at the site, the spokesman said: 'That would be a matter for the developer.'

As a result of the police not really acting some fellow Swedes choose to stand up against the insurgents who are burning up our cars and creating fear in the community.

At first they are walking to a place where like 30 insurgents are but the police bus and stuff blocks their path.

Later in the video when the police has surrounded them they are screaming things like "do something so that we don't have to!" "move!" "do your job!" They are not in any way violent against the police.

How did the Swedish media react? Headlines were "Extreme Right Nazi was detained by the Police"

Very ironic that the police protected the insurgents from the vigilantes instead of acting against the people who are destroying the cars.

The secret Bilderberg conference of world's most powerful comes to UK

Former participants have called it THE most important meeting they have ever attended. And this year it's being held in the unlikely suburban town of Watford.

This is the closest you'll get to Bilderberg 2013 being held at the Grove Hotel about 1kilometer behind me. For the first year ever the list of attendees has been released beforehand. For the first time ever there is a press tent, albeit far from the actual event. But the truth is, we still don't know much about what happens back there.

What we do know is that Bilderberg was founded in 1954 - in the midst of the cold war - bringing together Western Europe and the United Sates. It was crucial in providing impetus for the formation the European Union.

Today there is a powerful cocktail of about 140 - one third from politics, including monarchs and defense officials.

And two thirds are the best of the rest. Think Deutsche Bank, Barclays, Amazon, Google, Shell and HSBC.

Head of insurance giant AXA is chairman. Goldman Sachs and BP are donors.

A high fence and armed checkpoints stopped about 100 protesters getting any closer than this allocated site, to make their sentiments clear.

The mainstream media will dub them conspiracy theorists. Alex Jones is one of their most prominent faces.

The media frenzy on Jones' arrival on Thursday would suggest things are changing. Bilderberg has even been forced to put out some of its agenda. Economic growth and medical research. Another session is simply called "current affairs".

That view may be dismissed by the mainstream. But the truth is, we do not know - what is said - or what is run from inside Bilderberg.

Tax dollars hard at work rehabilitating criminals:

A Chicago man arrested for the 99th time this week was denied bond.

Albert Luis Alvarez, 37, was arrested Wednesday on charges of drug possession after apparently using his 3-year-old child to beg for money in west suburban Riverside.

Riverside police received a call of a suspicious man at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times . Police said the man was asking for money in the street and begging door-to-door in the 7200 block of West Ogden.

Officers found Alvarez pushing his 3-year-old child in a stroller. He refused to remove his hands from his pockets when police questioned him and then threw several clear plastic bags on the ground and tried to run away. Police caught Alvarez and found heroin in his pockets.

Alvarez had 98 prior arrests and 23 convictions including burglary, assault and drugs, according to the Sun-Times . He also had nine alias names, as well as five Social Security numbers and 10 dates of birth.

Weitzel's child was turned over to a family member following the arrest, and the Dept. of Children & Family Services was notified.

A white supremacist who burned down a black family's
southwest suburban home in a racist attack was told by a judge on Monday
to be thankful for the black lawyer who defended him.
Brian
James Moudry - who has the phrase "Blue Eyed Devil" tattooed on the back
of his shaved head - was sentenced to 10 years in prison by U.S.
District Judge Robert Gettleman on Wednesday for the June 17, 2007,
arson that left a Joliet family of eight, including several young
children, terrified and homeless.Gettleman told the 36-year-old
he should use his time behind bars to get treatment for his mental
health problems and to change his bigoted thinking.Gesturing
toward MiAngel Cody, the African-American federal defender appointed to
represent Moudry, Gettleman said that "just looking at this lady next to
you . . . who has represented you so ably and compassionately" should
teach Moudry that "race doesn't matter.""Everyone who comes into
this room is of the same race -- the human race that we try to treat
equally under the law," the judge said.Moudry declined to speak
at the sentencing hearing, but he nodded vigorously when Gettleman told
him he was lucky the fire he sparked at a black neighbor's home did not
kill anybody."It could have been a lot worse," the judge said,
adding that he believed that, in his better moments, Moudry was also
glad nobody was hurt.Cody had argued that Moudry's unmedicated
schizophrenia, his history of childhood abuse at the hands of his
father, and the fact that he was "extremely intoxicated" had all played a
role in his decision to attack his neighbors.Wearing an orange
prison-issue jumpsuit, Moudry laughed and appeared to share a joke with
the lawyer, who put her hand on his shoulder in a gesture of support as
he was led back to his cell.Still, hopes that Moudry will change
his racist and violent ways were tempered by two recent fights he had
inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center, including one in which he
hit an African-American inmate with a lock inside a sock, yelling "Yeah,
I'm a white m*********** from Chicago, m***********," according to
court papers.Urging a 10-year sentence, which Moudry agreed to
under a plea deal, prosecutor Nancy DePodesta said Moudry committed an
"exceptionally despicable crime motivated by hate."She added that
while Moudry's "views are certainly protected, his violent actions are
not," saying the sentence should send the signal that "if you threaten
someone because of their race, you forfeit your right to live in a free
society."http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22513387/brian-james-moudry-white-supremacist-gets-10-years-for-torching-black-familys-home
