By Glenn Garvin

Miami Herald

In his book "The Joys of
Yiddish," Leo Rosten, struggling to define the concept of "chutzpah" to
Americans, toyed with a bunch of English expressions: "gall, brazen
nerve, effrontery, incredible 'guts,' presumption plus arrogance." In
the end, he concluded no single word sufficed. Chutzpah, he wrote was
"that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and
father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an
orphan."If Rosten were around today, he might offer another
definition: a country that sends a spy to steal millions of pages of
national-security secrets from its best friend in the world and then
demands his release as a sign of friendship. That's exactly what
happened last month when President Obama visited Israel, only to be
berated over the imprisonment of Tel Aviv's self-described "master spy,"
Jonathan Pollard.Pollard has been in jail since 1985, when he
was arrested for using his job as a U.S. Navy intelligence analyst to
plunder enough classified documents to fill a 6-foot-by-10-foot room,
which he sold to Israel for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sentenced
to life in prison, he's scheduled for parole in November 2015, after
completing 30 years of his term.Pressure on Obama

Both
Israeli president Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are
believed to have demanded Pollard's release in private meetings with
Obama. Members of the Knesset were so open about their intentions to
rough Obama up on the subject of Pollard that the president declined an
offer to speak there.Deprived of a chance to shout at Obama face
to face, Knesset member Danny Danon instead took to the pages of USA
Today, where his op-ed piece called Pollard's jailing "an historic
wrong" and added: "If President Obama plans on asking the Israeli people
to trust him during what promises to be a tumultuous four years,
bringing Jonathan home would be a just and noble way to do so."Putting
aside the fact that a lot of Americans might reasonably expect they've
already earned some trust by giving Israel $3 billion a year (nearly
half the U.S. budget for foreign military aid), the clamor for Pollard's
release begs the question: Why are the Israelis insisting that the
future of relations with the United States rests on the immediate
release of a convicted spy who is just 19 months from possible parole?
 The
answer is that Israeli officials don't want Pollard released because
he's served his time. They want him released because they think he
didn't do anything wrong and they want Washington to publicly admit it.
And they think this is an opportune moment to press their demand because
Obama is politically weak and might hope to score points with a
wavering constituency, American Jews. But releasing Pollard would
be a giant mistake for the president. Pollard is neither a naive kid who
blundered into trouble for unthinkingly passing a harmless secret or
two to an ally, nor an innocent Jewish victim persecuted by an insidious
network of anti-Semites within the U.S. government. He is, rather, a
mercenary who looted U.S. national security for personal gain.Israel
was the biggest beneficiary of Pollard's perfidy. He stole so many
documents - delivering up to five suitcases-full at a time to his
control officer - that the Israelis had to buy a condo and equip it with
a high-speed copying machine just to handle the take. The Israelis in
return paid him $2,500 a month (well over his U.S. government take-home
pay), lavished him with jewelry and European vacations, and set up a
Swiss bank account to hold a $300,000 bonus. And still Pollard
wanted more. He tried to sell American secrets to Pakistan, Australia
and South Africa's apartheid regime. He stole classified documents on
China to help his wife land a big public-relations contract with China.Profitable proposition

If
spying was quite profitable for Pollard, it was no bargain for American
taxpayers. It cost many millions of dollars to replace the intelligence
systems he compromised, including a blueprint for U.S. electronic
interceptions around the world. Pollard's disclosures enabled Israeli
missions that the United States would never have agreed to support, like
a 1985 bombing raid on a PLO headquarters in Tunisia that killed scores
of innocent bystanders. And much of the material Pollard stole
(including information on how the United States tracked Soviet
submarines) wound up in Moscow - perhaps because the KGB pilfered it
from Israel, perhaps because the Israelis swapped it for Jewish
emigrants from Russia. It is inconceivable that any American
president would stamp these actions with approval by granting early
release to the man who carried them out. And for President Obama, whose
attorney general has prosecuted more government officials for leaks
under the 1917 Espionage Act than all his predecessors combined, it
would be an act of unfathomable hypocrisy. If it's OK for Pollard
to dump documents to Israel, why isn't it OK for Bradley Manning to do
the same to Wikileaks? Because the Knesset says so?Glenn Garvin is a columnist for the Miami Herald.

Sweden could be paying a tough price for its policies on immigrants and multiculturalism. A Stockholm suburb erupted into violence for a few hours, as crowds of angry, masked youths from migrant families burned cars, smashed windows and hurled stones at police officers.

What's believed to have fueled the riot was the death of a 69-year-old man, allegedly shot by police in the area last week. The chairman of Sweden's National Democrats Party Marc Abramsson told RT this new trouble highlights old policy flaws.

German Intelligence Sees Assad Regaining Hold

Not even a year ago, German intelligence predicted Syrian autocrat Bashar Assad's regime would soon collapse. Now, the agency instead believes the rebels are in trouble. Government troops are set to make significant advances, it predicts.

Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), has fundamentally changed its view of the ongoing civil war in Syria.

BND now believes the Syrian military of autocrat Bashar Assad is more stable than it has been in a long time and is capable of undertaking successful operations against rebel units at will. BND head Gerhard Schindler informed select politicians of the agency's new assessment in a secret meeting.

It is a notable about-face. As recently as last summer, Schindler reported to government officials and parliamentarians that he felt the Assad regime would collapse early in 2013. He repeated the view in interviews with the media.

At the time, the BND pointed to the Syrian military's precarious supply situation and large numbers of desertions that included members of the officer core. German intelligence spoke of the "end phase of the regime."

Since then, however, the situation has changed dramatically, the BND believes. Schindler used graphics and maps to demonstrate that Assad's troops once again possess effective supply lines to ensure sufficient quantities of weapons and other materiel. Fuel supplies for tanks and military aircraft, which had proved troublesome, are once again available, Schindler reported. The new situation allows Assad's troops to combat spontaneous rebel attacks and even retake positions that were previously lost. The BND does not believe that Assad's military is strong enough to defeat the rebels, but it can do enough to improve its position in the current stalemate.

Severing Rebel Supply Lines

The assessment appears to be consistent with recent reports from Syria, where government troops have been able to regain the upper hand in the region stretching from Damascus to Homs, including coastal areas near Homs. Furthermore, fighters loyal to Assad have expelled rebel fighters from several districts on the edge of Damascus and cut off their supply lines to the south. Currently, the regime is in the process of severing rebel supply lines to the west.

Meanwhile, the BND believes that rebel forces, which include several groups of Islamist fighters with ties to al-Qaida, are facing extreme difficulties. Schindler reported that different rebel groups are fighting with each other to attain supremacy in individual regions. Furthermore, regime troops have managed to cut supply lines for weapons and evacuation routes for wounded fighters. Each new battle weakens the militias further, the BND chief said.

Should the conflict continue as it has in recent weeks, says Schindler, government troops could retake the entire southern half of the country by the end of 2013. That would leave only the north for insurgent fighters, where Kurdish rebels have tight control over their areas.

Lowering Expectations

Schindler's report on the state of the rebel groups allows little room for hope that serious talks between the insurgents and the Assad regime will take place soon. The BND says there is no functional chain of command between opposition leaders abroad and the militias inside of Syria. The fighters on the ground simply don't recognize the political leadership, says the BND.

The United Nations is currently doing all it can to encourage both sides to engage in peace talks in Geneva, though no date has been set. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is once again travelling to the Middle East on Wednesday to plan for such negotiations.

At a meeting of the "Friends of Syria" in the Jordanian capital of Amman, Westerwelle is set to meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry among others. But over the weekend, he sought to lower expectations, saying that it isn't clear yet whether the Assad regime is even prepared to engage in talks.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A Sacramento surgeon has been reprimanded by the
state medical board for suggesting a patient try oral sex to improve
her gag reflex.
The unnamed patient was hesitant to undergo an upper-gastrointestinal
endoscopy. The procedure would require a scope going from someone's
mouth into their intestinal tract.
She told Sacramento Dr. J. Peter Zegarra that she "gags at the dentist" and didn't want the procedure.

That's when the doctor suggested in front of her husband, "She should
be practicing twice a week on her husband by giving him (oral sex) to
address her gagging reflex."

"This constituted unprofessional conduct, and so this is a message
that this probably wasn't appropriate," said Cassandra Hockenson, with
the California Medical Board. "A more appropriate response should have
come with regards to dealing with her gag reflex issues."
Even if it was a playful suggestion, the medical board says that's no defense.

We stopped by Dr. Zegarra's Sacramento-area office for comment and was told he was in surgery. He never got back to us.

But the agency that oversees complaints against doctors is glad the
patient reached out to them after hearing the shocking suggestion.
"We encourage people to come forward, and I applaud her for coming forward and saying something," Hockenson said.

Nightclub Investigated for Installing 2-Way Mirror in Women's Bathroom

A new nightclub in Scotland is being investigated by police and other Glasgow city officials after a newspaper investigation revealed the club had installed two-way mirrors in its women's bathrooms, exposing the women to viewers in two private rooms.

The Scottish Sunday Express broke the story this weekend, claiming they've seen photos showing men posing in front of the two-way mirrors, with women using the bathroom behind them. The paper said there were no signs or notifications in the bathroom or club notifying the women they were being watched.

Several female club-goers interviewed by the paper expressed shock at the revelations. "I find it absolutely outrageous that a club can get away with this, it is a complete invasion of privacy of the unsuspecting girls," one said. "Nowhere is it made clear that this is the case so when visiting the bathroom for the first time, there are women bending over the sink, pouting into the mirror to redo their lipstick, adjusting themselves whilst unknowingly being watched by people on the other
side."

When reporters from the the Sunday Express contacted the club posing as potential clients, they were told the the private rooms, which cost over $1200 to rent, were not available to male or mixed gender groups. Photos online reportedly show otherwise. When the Express asked the club for official comment, they didn't receive a response.

However, on Monday the Shimmy Club responded to the growing controversy on their Facebook page, saying the two-way mirror was "created as a bit of fun, an interactive feature which we hoped would act as a talking point." As for those offended by the concept, the club writes, "its (sic) clear that those who are negatively commenting on line may not have been lucky enough to get past the door staff yet." The club did, however, say they would remove the mirrors "if your feedback (and not that of the media) is that you want the mirror area to change."

Those changes, if they do happen, might occur too late for the club to avoid legal trouble; The Guardian reports that Scottish police and and Glasgow city council are investigating the club after receiving complaints.

PM's humiliation: Cameron forced to accept last-minute deal with Labour to head off Conservative rebellion over gay marriage

CAMERON OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Cameron enraged Tory rebels last night by striking a late deal with Labour to prevent his own MPs wrecking gay marriage legislation.

The Prime Minister backed Labour's calls for an immediate consultation on the future of civil partnerships once gay marriages are legalised.

This could either lead to them being extended to heterosexual couples or scrapped totally.

Despite the opposition of half the Tory backbenchers, the 11th-hour deal, a humiliation for the PM, means same-sex marriages could take place next summer.

Mr Cameron's reliance on Labour to force the measure through highlighted his divisions with his backbenchers. Gay marriage has become the latest in a series of issues sparking friction between the PM and traditionalist Tories.

The legislation had looked to be in serious trouble yesterday as Labour threatened to vote to introduce civil partnerships for straight couples as well - a move which critics said could cost the Exchequer lb4billion by extending pension rights and inheritance tax breaks.

Tory rebels were backing the move in an attempt to wreck the entire Bill.

But the Government, which had previously suggested it would review civil partnerships within five years, headed off a potential defeat by agreeing to a consultation immediately.

Sources said the review would be 'very thorough and very, very long'.

In the Commons, Tory splits were highlighted by a clash between Sir Gerald Howarth and Margot James, the Tories' only openly gay woman MP.

Miss James, welcoming the legislation, said many gay people had suffered abuse and anti-discrimination legislation was needed to protect them.

But Sir Gerald replied: 'I fear that the playing field has not been levelled. I believe that the pendulum is now swinging so far the other way and there are plenty in the aggressive homosexual community who see this as but a stepping stone to something even further.'

Veteran Tory Edward Leigh protested: 'If you dare disagree with the orthodoxy that gay marriage is the best thing since sliced bread, you are breaking a new taboo.'

He suggested that the 'outlandish views of the loony left of the 1980s have now become embedded in high places'.

'What the Government is refusing to recognise is that they are not legislating this Bill to redefine marriage in a vacuum.

Yvette Cooper, shadow home secretary, revealed that Labour would withdraw its support from the amendment tabled by Tory opponents of gay marriage. 'They are legislating in a culture which has been so coloured by political correctness that mild-mannered people expressing reasonable beliefs in moderate tones are treated like villains,' he added.

She said: 'We know David Cameron's leadership is too weak to be able to push this through and to be able to get support on his own benches.

'We think that is a serious problem. But also we don't want to see gay couples who are desperate to set the date and get married at the mercy of this Tory infighting.'

Last night Cabinet ministers Iain Duncan Smith and Owen Paterson voted with the rebels who were calling for registrars to opt-out of performing same sex marriages.

Bank massacre: The killer got a medal in the past after he shot and killed a terrorist

Former co-workers, neighbors relate of disturbing signs from Itamar Alon who in 2002 awarded medal for bravery after managed to stop a Palestinian terror attack in Beersheba, and today massacered four people in Beersheba bank, one of them a young mother, and later killed himself -

In February 2002, two Palestiniians from the Hamas Az el-Din el Qassam brigades opened fire in all directions at the entrence of the southern district command in Beersheba . They killed and injured several soldiers, including 2 young soldier females who were shot to death.

Itamar Alon, a security officer in the south, happened to be nearby. He ran to the scene, shot one of the attackers and brought him down. His actions saw him awarded the Beersheba bravery medal, which he received from the previous mayor Yaakov Terner. Alon is also the man who on Monday perpetrated a massacre at a Beersheba branch of Bank Hapoalim that claimed the lives of four people before turning the gun on himself after his ATM card was blocked due to a debt.

Alon, who was in his 40s, started working as a security guard in Beersheba after he was discharged from military service. About year after the incident that awarded him the medal, complaints started to pour in against his interpersonal skills and his conduct at the workplace. A co-worker said he showed little consideration for his colleagues, was extremely inflexible in his positions and given to aggression.

The watermark event leading up to his termination came as he appeared at a local school on Purim donning a faux suicide belt. A teacher who spotted the unorthodox costume argued with Alon, and the conversation escalated to threats. He was sacked from his job following the incident and remained unemployed thereafter.

He filed an appeal against unlawful termination; however a judge ruled that his poor people skills warranted a sacking.

The house where he lived with his parents, spending most of his days idly sitting on the balcony, is near the site of the carnage. His neighbors register disbelief at his actions saying, however, that he was not without peculiarities.

One neighbor said Alon "was a strange person, a real weirdo. You never knew what to expect of him." Another said "he was a nice guy. He had a lovely singing voice and he used to sing on the balcony every morning. I knew he wasn't working but I didn't know he was in financial trouble."

Initial reports said Alon sought to settle a NIS 6,000 debt at the bank this morning. After bank clerks refused to meet his demands, he returned to the offices to carry out the carnage which ended only with his own death.

Four persons, including the Bank manager, his deputy and a female costumer were killed in the incident, which at first was reported to be a heist. After he released a woman he held as a hostage, Alon put an end to his life.

* Miriam Cohen, an employee of Hapoalim Bank branch in Beersheba, was held hostage by city resident Itamar Alon for over an hour after he murdered four people at around noon Monday, apparently after the bank refused to settle over a debt.

"I'll show you, like you didn't give me, now I'll show you," Cohen described how the shooter kept repeating in an interview to channels 2 and 10.

Describing her ordeal, Cohen said the shooter warned her to stay silent else he will shoot her. "A second later the gun was drawn in my face," she recounted.

Locked in the toilet with the shooter, Cohen was sure she would not escape with her life. "Thank God, it was a miracle," she said. After an hour, Alon told her to turn around with her face to the wall. "I said 'that's it, this is the end of me,' and then I lowered my head and didn't look at him and he put the gun in his mouth, I couldn't see, but I heard a shot."

She then ran out of the bank and was taken by the police.

This case is from India(?) and I've had trouble determining the cause of such a horrific affliction. Although it may be possible that the maggots applied in both cases did not end up there by accident, but were introduced by a health professional or local doctor to consume the necrotic flesh and keep the wound clean. The perils of living in a remote location without access to proper health care I guess

300lb Fort Worth Man Dies After Being Shocked By Police Taser

FORT WORTH - A 300-pound man who was subdued when he was hit by a Taser fired by a Fort Worth police officer during a drug raid Thursday died soon afterward, authorities and relatives said Friday.

Moments after police kicked open an unlocked door of a house in the 3200 block of Thannisch Avenue, they had Jermaine Darden, 34, facedown on the floor, said his mother, Donna Randle.

Police said an officer fired his Taser when Darden resisted arrest.

His mother said several people shouted at officers that Darden, who had asthma, was not resisting but was struggling to breathe.

"They were trying to lay him on his stomach, and he can't breathe while he's on his stomach," Randle said. "He was trying to turn over so he could breathe. But they ignored us and Tased him."

Darden was pronounced dead at 5:06 p.m. in the emergency room at John Peter Smith Hospital, the Tarrant County medical examiner's office reported. The cause of death had not been determined late Friday.

Cliff Crippen said he saw paramedics perform CPR on Darden while he was on a gurney in the front yard.

"They were pounding on his chest and squeezing on an air bag," said Crippen, 29, of Euless. "I saw his arm fall limp and a police officer place it back on his chest, and I thought to myself, 'He's dead.'

"They sat in the ambulance about 10 minutes before it moved. And then it rolled away, no lights, no sirens."

The incident is being investigated by Fort Worth's major-case unit, police said.

In a police report, Officer N.B. Danford wrote that he drafted a probable-cause warrant to search for cocaine at the house. The "no-knock" warrant was signed by Tarrant County Magistrate Cheyenne Minick at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, according to the report.

A copy of the warrant provided to the Star-Telegram by Darden's relatives said a suspect might be concealing cocaine, materials used to package and prepare drugs for distribution, electronic and written records, cash and weapons.

Police reports list five people who were arrested:

o Jerome Orlando Cook, 25, suspected of possessing 1 to 4 grams of a controlled substance and 2 to 4 ounces of marijuana.

o Hunter Rutledge, 22, suspected of possessing less than 2 ounces of marijuana. Police also found that Rutledge was wanted on two warrants from other jurisdictions.

o Lonnie Turner, 27, accused of evading arrest and detention. Turner also had a warrant.

o Donald Raynell Virden, 29, and Brandy Matthews, 29, both with class C warrants from Fort Worth.

Matthews, who identified herself as Darden's cousin, said she has an unpaid ticket for talking on a cellphone while driving in a school zone.

Randle said Darden weighed more than 300 pounds and was a chronic asthmatic who had trouble breathing. During an interview at the house, she pointed to a "breathing machine" and an ampul of a clear liquid she described as albuterol nitrate, which she said her son used often to help him breathe.

A police report listed items seized at the address: ammunition, a white powdery substance, a green leafy substance, capsules containing a brown substance, three telephones and a credit card.

"When they came in, they had their weapons drawn like we were members of a drug cartel," Randle said. "There were six people who told the police the man had health problems, yet they continued to do what they did.

"I really want the police to tell me why they had to use such excessive force."

A young Somali journalist in Sweden named Amun Abdullahi got herself
in trouble with the politically correct elite by reporting the truth
about the radicalization of young Somalis in Rinkeby (a culturally
enriched suburb of Stockholm), where they were recruited for jihad by
the Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabab.

The treatment meted out to Ms. Abdullahi made her decide to move back
to Somalia. She acknowledges that Mogadishu is a dangerous place, but
she considers Sweden more dangerous, because "here you cannot tell the
truth.
