VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Violence erupted Saturday night and early Sunday morning at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

According
to Virginia Beach Police, officers received 300 emergency calls in the
area for service between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., including three shootings,
two stabbings and three robberies.
  Grazia
Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department told WAVY.com the
first shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Atlantic
Avenue. Moyers said a victim was struck in the leg/hip area but was
uncooperative with police.
  Hours
later, the second shooting occurred in the 300 block of 33rd Street
when a man sitting in a vehicle heard a loud noise and his window
shattered around 3 a.m. The victim then noticed he'd been shot in the
chest.
  Less
than 15 minutes later, another shooting occurred in the area of 27th
Street and Atlantic Avenue after a verbal argument between two people.
Moyers said the victim was struck in the face by a gun, which then
discharged and he was hit in his face.
Officials say all injuries received were non-life threatening.

    Photos: Violence at Oceanfront

Video shot by 10 On Your Side showed officers on horses working to get control of the crowd which spilled out into the streets.
  One
person was arrested for a shots-fired call, but 10 On Your Side video
showed multiple people were detained and put into police cars as the
investigation continued and officers organized the situation.
  Officials
told WAVY.com crews were forced to shut down parts of Interstate 264
and some surface streets overnight as they worked to get things under
control.
  Things
were under control and streets were reopened by 6 a.m. Sunday. City
crews were cleaning up a large amount of trash left in the area and
spraying the streets down with water around 6:30 a.m.

The 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes (720p)

Another video about the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes, this time produced jointly by the USGS and the state of Tennessee with more of a focus on Tennessee itself.

The 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes were an intense intraplate earthquake series beginning with an initial pair of very large earthquakes on December 16, 1811. These earthquakes remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the eastern United States in recorded history. These events, as well as the seismic zone of their occurrence, were named for the Mississippi River town of New Madrid, then part of the Louisiana Territory, now within Missouri.

There are estimates that the earthquakes were felt strongly over roughly 50,000 sq mi, and moderately across nearly 1 million square miles. The historic 1906 San Francisco earthquake, by comparison, was felt moderately over roughly 6,200 sq mi.

The 1811-1812 earthquakes

The four earthquakes

December 16, 1811, 2:15 a.m. (M ~7.2 - 8.1) epicenter in northeast Arkansas. It caused only slight damage to man-made structures, mainly because of the sparse population in the epicentral area. The future location of Memphis, Tennessee experienced level IX shaking on the Mercalli intensity scale. A seismic seiche propagated upriver, and Little Prairie (a village that was on the site of the former Fort San Fernando, near the site of present-day Caruthersville, Missouri) was heavily damaged by soil liquefaction.

December 16, 1811, 8:15 a.m. (M ~7.2-8.1) epicenter in northeast Arkansas. This shock followed the first earthquake by six hours and was similar in intensity.

January 23, 1812, 9 a.m. (M ~7.0-7.8) epicenter in the Missouri Bootheel. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks. Johnson and Schweig attributed this earthquake to a rupture on the New Madrid North Fault. This may have placed strain on the Reelfoot Fault.

February 7, 1812, 4:45 a.m. (M ~7.4-8.0) epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were severely damaged, and their chimneys were toppled. This shock was definitively attributed to the Reelfoot Fault by Johnston and Schweig. Uplift along a segment of this reverse fault created temporary waterfalls on the Mississippi at Kentucky Bend, created waves that propagated upstream, and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake by obstructing streams in what is now Lake County, Tennessee.

Susan Hough, a seismologist of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has recently estimated the earthquakes' magnitudes as "right around magnitude 7. Possibly a bit below, possibly a bit above, but not as big as 7.5."

Eyewitness accounts

John Bradbury, a Fellow of the Linnean Society, was on the Mississippi on the night of December 15, 1811, and describes the tremors in great detail in his Travels in the Interior of America in the Years 1809, 1810 and 1811, published in 1817.

After supper, we went to sleep as usual: about ten o'clock, and in the night I was awakened by the most tremendous noise, accompanied by an agitation of the boat so violent, that it appeared in danger of upsetting ... I could distinctly see the river as if agitated by a storm; and although the noise was inconceivably loud and terrific, I could distinctly hear the crash of falling trees, and the screaming of the wild fowl on the river, but found that the boat was still safe at her moorings. By the time we could get to our fire, which was on a large flag in the stern of the boat, the shock had ceased; but immediately the perpendicular banks, both above and below us, began to fall into the river in such vast masses, as to nearly sink our boat by the swell they occasioned ... At day-light we had counted twenty-seven shocks.

Eliza Bryan in New Madrid, Territory of Missouri, wrote the following eyewitness account in March, 1812.

On the 16th of December, 1811, about two o'clock, a.m., we were visited by a violent shock of an earthquake, accompanied by a very awful noise resembling loud but distant thunder, but more hoarse and vibrating, which was followed in a few minutes by the complete saturation of the atmosphere, with sulphurious vapor, causing total darkness. The screams of the affrighted inhabitants running to and fro, not knowing where to go, or what to do-the cries of the fowls and beasts of every species-the cracking of trees falling, and the roaring of the Mississippi- the current of which was retrograde for a few minutes, owing as is supposed, to an irruption in its bed- formed a scene truly horrible.

John Reynolds (February 26, 1788 - May 8, 1865) who was the 4th governor of Illinois, among other political posts, mentions the earthquake in his biography My Own Times: Embracing Also the History of My Life (1855):

On the night of 16th November, 1811, an earthquake occurred, that produced great consternation amongst the people. The centre of the violence was in New Madrid, Missouri, but the whole valley of the Mississippi was violently agitated. Our family all were sleeping in a log cabin, and my father leaped out of bed crying aloud "the Indians are on the house" ... We laughed at the mistake of my father, but soon found out it was worse than the Indians. Not one in the family knew at the time that it was an earthquake. The next morning another shock made us acquainted with it, so we decided it was an earthquake. The cattle came running home bellowing with fear, and all animals were terribly alarmed on the occasion. Our house cracked and quivered, so we were fearful it would fall to the ground. In the American Bottom many chimneys were thrown down, and the church bell in Cahokia sounded by the agitation of the building. It is said the shock of an earthquake was felt in Kaskaskia in 1804, but I did not perceive it. The shocks continued for years in Illinois, and some have experienced it this year, 1855.

The Shaker diarist Samuel Swan McClelland described the effects of the earthquake on the Shaker settlement at West Union (Busro), Indiana, where the earthquakes contributed to the temporary abandonment of the westernmost Shaker community.

Consequence of the 1811-12 earthquakes

Sand blows were common throughout the area, and can still be seen from the air in cultivated fields. The shockwaves propagated efficiently through the firm midwestern bedrock, with residents as far away as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk, Virginia, awakened by intense shaking. Church bells were reported to ring as far as Boston, Massachusetts and York, Ontario (now Toronto), and sidewalks were reported to have been cracked and broken in Washington, D.C. There were also reports of toppled chimneys in Maine.

Disaster relief

A request, dated January 13, 1812, by William Clark (famous for his exploration of the American West with Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery from 1803 to 1805), then the governor of the Louisiana Territory (the territory was renamed the Missouri Territory soon after the quake to eliminate confusion with the new state of Louisiana), asked for federal relief for the "inhabitants of New Madrid County."

Whereas the Catalogue of miseries and afflictions, with which it has pleased the Supreme Being of the Universe to visit the inhabitants of the earth there are none more truly awful and destructive than Earthquakes ... The inhabitants of the late District now County of New Madrid, in this Territory, have lately been visited with several calamities of this kind, which have deluged large portions of their country and involved in the greatest distress many families, whilst others have been entirely ruined ... In the opinion of the said General Assembly provisions ought to be made by law for or cashiered to the said inhabitants relief, either out of the public fund or in some other way as may can meet to the cost demand availability of the General Government.

This is possibly the very first request that the U.S. Federal Government had received for aid from one of its territories.

Slave George murder

The earthquakes helped bring to justice the murderers of George Lewis (commonly known as "Slave George"). George was slain on the night of December 15-16, 1811 by two nephews of Thomas Jefferson, Lilburn Lewis and Isham Lewis, who were also relatives of Meriwether Lewis. After killing him with an axe in front of other slaves, George's owners intended to burn his remains, but the first New Madrid earthquake interrupted their effort, and so the corpse was interred in a brick chimney. The murder might well have escaped discovery by authorities, except that the January 23 and February 7 quakes caused the chimney to partially collapse, exposing George's remains. Lilburn and Isham Lewis were quickly investigated, arrested and charged. Lilburn killed himself; Isham escaped from jail and probably died during the War of 1812.

Geologic setting

The underlying cause of New Madrid earthquakes is not well understood, but modern faulting seems to be related to an ancient geologic feature buried under the Mississippi River alluvial plain, known as the Reelfoot Rift.

Reelfoot rift

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is made up of reactivated faults that formed when what is now North America began to split or rift apart during the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia in the Neoproterozoic Era (about 750 million years ago). Faults were created along the rift and igneous rocks formed from magma that was being pushed towards the surface. The resulting rift system failed but has remained as an aulacogen (a scar or zone of weakness) deep underground. Another unsuccessful attempt at rifting 200 million years ago created additional faults, which made the area weaker. The resulting geological structures make up the Reelfoot Rift, and have since been deeply buried by younger sediments. But the ancient faults appear to have made the rocks deep in the Earth's crust in the New Madrid area mechanically weaker than much of the rest of North America.

This weakness, possibly combined with focusing effects from mechanically stronger igneous rocks nearby, allows the relatively small east-west compressive forces that exist in the North American plate to reactivate old faults, making the area prone to earthquakes.

Since other rifts are known to occur in North America's stress environment but not all are associated with modern earthquakes, (for example the Midcontinent Rift System that stretches from Minnesota to Kansas), other processes could be at work to locally increase mechanical stress on the New Madrid faults. Stress changes associated with bending of the lithosphere caused by the melting of continental glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age, has been considered to play a role, as well as downward pull from sinking igneous rock bodies below the fault. It has also been suggested that some form of heating in the lithosphere below the area may be making deep rocks more plastic, which concentrates compressive stress in the shallower subsurface area where the faulting occurs. There may be local stress from a change in the flow of the mantle beneath the NMSZ, caused by the sinking Farallon Plate, according to one model.

Seismic zone

When epicenters of modern earthquakes are plotted on a map, three trends become apparent. First is the general northeast-southwest trend paralleling the trend of the Reelfoot Rift, in Arkansas, south of where the epicenters turn northwest. This is a right-lateral strike-slip fault system parallel to the Reelfoot Rift.

The second is the southeast to northwest trend that occurs just southwest of New Madrid. This trend is a stepover thrust fault known as the Reelfoot Fault, associated with the Tiptonville dome and the impoundment of Reelfoot Lake. Epicenter locations on this fault are more spread out because the fault surface is inclined and dips into the ground, towards the south, at around forty degrees. Slip is towards the northeast. Motion on this fault in the 1811-1812 series created waterfalls on the Mississippi.

The third line, extending northeast from the northwestern end of the Reelfoot Fault is another right-lateral strike-slip fault, termed New Madrid North.

The epicenters of over 4,000 earthquakes can be identified from seismic measurements taken since 1974. It can be seen that the earthquakes originate from the seismic activity of the Reelfoot Rift. The zone which is colored in red on the map is called the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Recent earthquakes

4000 earthquake reports since 1974

The zone remains active today. In recent decades minor earthquakes have continued. New forecasts estimate a 7 to 10 percent chance, in the next 50 years, of a repeat of a major earthquake like those that occurred in 1811-1812, which likely had magnitudes of between 7.5 and 8.0. There is a 25 to 40 percent chance, in a 50-year time span, of a magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquake.

Recurrence potential

In a report filed in November 2008, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States," further predicting "widespread and catastrophic" damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake or greater would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure.

The potential for the recurrence of large earthquakes and their impact today on densely populated cities in and around the seismic zone has prompted research devoted to understanding the New Madrid Seismic Zone. By studying evidence of past quakes and closely monitoring ground motion and current earthquake activity, scientists attempt to understand their causes and recurrence intervals.

The lack of apparent land movement along the New Madrid fault system has long puzzled scientists. In 2009 two studies based on eight years of GPS measurements indicated that the faults were moving at no more than 0.2 millimeters (0.0079 in) a year. In contrast, the rate of slippage on the San Andreas Fault averages as much as 37 mm (1.5 in) a year across California.

GOP Lieutenant Governor Candidate in Va. Compares Planned Parenthood to KKK

By Abby D. Phillip
ABC News
This weekend, Virginia Republicans found their candidate for lieutenant governor in E.W. Jackson, a Chesapeake, Va. pastor who has compared Planned Parenthood to the Ku Klux Klan and also suggested that black Americans are being enslaved by the Democratic Party.

"It is time to end the slavish devotion to the Democrat Party," Jackson, who is African American, said in a 2012 YouTube video . "Planned Parenthood has been far more lethal to black lives than the KKK ever was. And the Democrat Party and their black civil rights allies are partners in this genocide."

"The Democrat Party has created an unholy alliance between certain, so-called civil rights leaders and Planned Parenthood, which has killed unborn black babies by the tens of millions," he added.

The statements have been catnip for Democrats eager to jump on the opportunity to label Jackson as "extreme" and link him to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who is the Republican nominee for the closely watched gubernatorial race.

"This choice highlights just how out-of-touch the Republican Party of Virginia has become," wrote Aneesh Chopra, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, in a prepared statement. "Jackson's extreme views are far to the right of Virginia voters. In fact, Jackson is far more extreme than Ken Cuccinelli - which is quite a feat."

The emergence of Jackson's video isn't the result of opposition research. It was put on the Internet by Jackson's own campaign long before this weekend's Republican Party of Virginia Convention.

In fact, the video has been around long enough that it was reported on in 2012 , when Jackson's race for a U.S. Senate seat received almost no notice.

Then, Jackson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and graduate of Harvard Law School, lost 95 percent of the Republican vote in his bid for the Senate nomination and the video became a casualty of post-election amnesia.

The video, and Jackson, have since re-emerged, mostly because being nominated as the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor is far easier than winning a statewide primary.

Because of the quirkiness of Virginia's electoral system, which allows lieutenant governors to be elected separately from governors, and the Virginia Republican nomination process, which produces a nominee who wins a majority of only 13,000 possible delegate votes, Jackson could end up asVirginia's lieutenant governor whether Cuccinelli wins or loses.

Meanwhile, Jackson's comments leave little to the imagination, and there is no indication that his campaign is attempting to hide it.

The evidence is strewn, and well-documented by liberal groups, all over the Internet.

Jackson has compared Planned Parenthood's support for abortion to genocide, railed against homosexuality, suggested that gay activists harbor an anti-black agenda and said that the Democratic Party is anti-Israel.

The question is whether efforts to link Jackson to Cuccinelli will be successful.

Democrats point out that Cuccinelli - in notably vague terms - endorsed Jackson as a "powerful fighter and communicator for first principles."

But asked for comment on Monday, Cuccinelli's camp did not immediately respond.

The Republican Governors Association declined to comment on Jackson's controversial statements.

"Ken Cuccinelli is running a focused campaign on job growth and pocketbook issues that are important to voters in the Commonwealth," said Jon Thompson, the RGA's spokesperson. "We are confident that come Election Day, voters will elect Cuccinelli as governor based on his ideas and his proven record of fighting for all Virginians."

(Bet all those "good ol' boys" are changing their tune after today)

Friday, Congress finally approved a $9.7 billion package
to pay flood insurance claims from Hurricane Sandy. The measure was
supposed to come to a vote earlier in the week, but was tabled by House
Speaker John Boehner, drawing much criticism from both Democrats and his fellow Republicans alike.
The measure
passed unanimously through the Senate, but 67 members of the House of
Representatives voted "no" to assisting people who were left, at best,
powerless or homeless by a hurricane in November. All 67 are
Republicans:
Justin Amash (R-MI) Andy Barr (R-KY) Dan Benishek (R-MI) Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) Mo Brooks (R-AL) Paul Broun (R-GA) Steve Chabot (R-OH) Doug Collins (R-GA) Mike Conaway (R-TX) Tom Cotton (R-AR) Steve Daines (R-MT) Ron DeSantis (R-FL) Scott DesJarlais (R-TN) Sean Duffy (R-WI) Jeff Duncan (R-SC) Jimmy Duncan (R-TN) Stephen Fincher (R-TN) John Fleming (R-LA) Bill Flores (R-TX) Virginia Foxx (R-NC) Trent Franks (R-AZ) Louie Gohmert (R-TX) Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) Paul Gosar (R-AZ) Trey Gowdy (R-SC) Tom Graves (R-GA) Sam Graves (R-MO) Andrew Harris (R-MD) George Holding (R-NC) Richard Hudson (R-NC) Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) Randy Hultgren (R-IL) Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) Jim Jordan (R-OH) Doug Lamborn (R-CO) Kenny Marchant (R-TX) Thomas Massie (R-KY) Tom McClintock (R-CA) Mark Meadows (R-NC) Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) Steven Palazzo (R-MS) Steve Pearce (R-NM) Scott Perry (R-PA) Tom Petri (R-WI) Mike Pompeo (R-KS) Tom Price (R-GA) Phil Roe (R-TN) Todd Rokita (R-IN) Keith Rothfus (R-PA) Ed Royce (R-CA) Paul Ryan (R-WI) Matt Salmon (R-AZ) David Schweikert (R-AZ) Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) Mac Thornberry (R-TX) Randy Weber (R-TX) Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) Roger Williams (R-TX) Joe Wilson (R-SC) Rob Woodall (R-GA) Kevin Yoder (R-KS) Ted Yoho (R-FL)
The most
high-profile Congressman on the list is Paul Ryan, failed vice
presidential nominee. It also includes Mo Brooks, Ted Yoho, Ron
DeSantis, Steven Palazzo and John Fleming from Alabama, Florida,
Louisiana and Mississippi, all of which are states that received
much-needed federal aid following Hurricane Katrina, the only hurricane
in American history that was more costly than Sandy . Speaker Boehner did not vote.Related Governor Cuomo: 'Extreme Weather, I Believe, Is Here to Stay' At
a news conference today, Governor Cuomo gave the first estimate on
exactly what the cost of Hurricane Sandy is going to be, stating that

This list
also includes the entire Republican representation from Arizona, Kansas,
Maryland, Montana and New Mexico (Maryland, Montana and New Mexico are
only represented by one Republican each).
While it
took Congress more than two months to approve any federal aid for Sandy
victims, it took just 10 days after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
This aid
package is only, however, the tip of the iceberg, as Congress will take
another vote on an additional $51 billion aid package on January 15. In a joint statement , New York and New Jersey governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie called the $9.7 billion a good start:

"Today's action by the House was a necessary and critical first step
towards delivering aid to the people of New Jersey and New York. While
we are pleased with this progress, today was just a down payment and it
is now time to go even further and pass the final and more complete,
clean disaster aid bill. We are trusting Congress to act accordingly on
January 15th and pass the final $51 billion instrumental for long-term
rebuilding in order for New Jersey, New York and our people to recover
after the severe devastation of Hurricane Sandy."

Man Fined $1,000 for saving Boy's Life with Unregistered Handgun

Authorities last week made an agreement not to prosecute a Northwest D.C. man who used his unregistered handgun to kill a pit bull in order to stop it from mauling a child in his neighborhood to death.

As part of the agreement, Benjamin Srigley , 39, was required to pay a $1,000 fine but will not have criminal charges filed against him for the three unregistered firearms and the ammunition that investigators found in his possession, said Ted Gest , a spokesman for the office of the attorney general.

"We took it into account that he saved this boy's life," Mr. Gest said.

Possession of an unregistered firearm or ammunition in the District is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, and prosecutors said Mr. Srigley could have faced up to seven criminal charges in the case.

"In our recent memory this is a unique charge because of the unusual circumstances of this case," said Mr. Gest , whose office generally prosecutes low-level crime in the District.

The horrific incident that spawned the investigation occurred on a Sunday afternoon in late January as 11-year-old Jayeon Simon and his friend rode bicycles near Eighth and Sheridan streets Northwest in the Brightwood neighborhood. According to court records filed in D.C. Superior Court, three unleashed pit bulls pounced on Jayeon and attacked him.

Seeing the attack, Mr. Srigley went inside his home to get his Ruger 9mm pistol while several other men hopped over fences to get away from the dogs, court records state.

From behind the wooden fence of his front lawn, Mr. Srigley began firing at the dogs. His shots attracted the attention of a Metropolitan Police Department officer on bicycle patrol nearby, and he also opened fire on the dogs, killing the other two.

The boy survived the attack but now bears scars on his elbow, torso and leg as a reminder.

Jayeon 's family is thankful for Mr. Srigley , crediting him for saving the boy's life.

"I don't think he should be charged at all because it's an act of heroism," said Chris Speight , 45, a cousin who helps care for Jayeon .

In addition to deciding how to handle Mr. Srigley 's case last week, authorities also made the decision to press charges against the dogs' owner, Alan Paige .

Mr. Paige , who lives a block north of the corner where the attack occurred, will face nine criminal charges - including three counts of possession of a dangerous dog, three counts of having an unleashed dog, and three counts of allowing a dog to go without a collar. The charges account for each of the three dogs, Mr. Gest said.

Mr. Paige could not be reached at his home Friday for comment. A hearing is scheduled in June for his case.

Answering the door at his home, a duplex with a stone facade and well-manicured yard, Mr. Srigley held his own dog back from his front door and declined Friday to comment on the case because it is still technically pending in court. The office of the attorney general is deferring prosecution, meaning it will remain active while Mr. Srigley meets conditions set by authorities.

In addition to paying a $1,000 fine, which was submitted in full Wednesday when the case when to court, the charges against Mr. Srigley - who police noted has no criminal record - will be dropped on condition he is not charged with any other crimes in the next two months.

While investigating the case, police seized Mr. Srigley 's pistol, which he said he purchased legally in Virginia when he lived there, and close to 100 rounds of ammunition from his home. Mr. Srigley told investigators that he owned two other guns - an antique M-1 rifle and a Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun - which were in a storage space in the District.

Police also seized those guns, but authorities have agreed they will return the firearms to Mr. Srigley when he registers them in Maryland, where he plans to soon move.

The First Lutheran Church of Oklahoma City dug up and
opened its Century Chest, a time capsule that was buried under the
church 100 years ago.
The artifacts inside the copper chest were remarkably well intact.
Credit for that goes to the church's Ladies Aide Society, the group that
buried the capsule a century ago. The group buried the chest in double
concrete walls and under 12 inches of concrete, according Fox News . It also left guidelines on how to unearth the capsule.
The chest was full of treasures. Among the finds: a newspaper from
the day the capsule was buried (April 22, 1913); a dress; a telephone; a
flag; a pen used by President William McKinley; a camera; and a pair of
women's shoes that still had their shine. Perhaps most remarkable was a
phonograph record featuring voices of citizens from the era.
The Oklahoma Gazette
reported that the project was the brainchild of Virginia Sohlberg. Her
great-granddaughter, Virginia Eason Weinmann, was especially moved by a
book that contained family photos and poetry.
Experts from the Oklahoma Historical Society worked with the church
to make sure the objects were handled with care. All of the items will
be displayed at the Oklahoma History Center.

DOSWELL, Va. (WAVY) - Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia confirms Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been buried in a Muslim cemetery in Doswell.

Tuesday, Martha Mullen of Richmond began the effort to find a final resting place for Tsarnaev by sending an email to local representatives of the Methodist, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu communities. She received an offer of a donated burial plot from the administrator of Al-Barzakh in Doswell.

The cemetery provides Muslim burial according to the moral code and religious law of Islam.

Mullen contacted the Worcester, Mass. police and asked them to give Peter Stefan, the funeral director of Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors the cemetery's information. Tsarnaev's uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Maryland, aided in the transfer of Tsarnaev's remains.

Mark Kurtz Rachel West Dominic Ross VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Violence erupted Saturday night and early Sunday morning at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

According to Virginia Beach Police, officers received 300 emergency calls in the area for service between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., including three shootings, two stabbings and three robberies.

Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department told WAVY.com the first shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue. Moyers said a victim was struck in the leg/hip area but was uncooperative with police.

Hours later, the second shooting occurred in the 300 block of 33rd Street when a man sitting in a vehicle heard a loud noise and his window shattered around 3 a.m. The victim then noticed he'd been shot in the chest.

Less than 15 minutes later, another shooting occurred in the area of 27th Street and Atlantic Avenue after a verbal argument between two people. Moyers said the victim was struck in the face by a gun, which then discharged and he was hit in his face.

Officials say all injuries received were non-life threatening.

VIRGINIA BEACH-- Va. Beach Mayor Will Sessoms met with the police chief Monday to discuss the weekend violence at the Oceanfront.

Sessoms said police found out about the Beach Weekend event a week before it happened. The promoters did not have to notify the city because the party was held on private property. He also said the event was larger than the city expected thanks to social media spreading the word.

There were tens of thousands of people at the Oceanfront for College Beach Weekend.

"It was just so crazy," said business owner Billy Baldwin. "We actually had a fight break out in front of my business at Sandbar that the crowd bused in and broke my front window. So that's a thousand dollars per window."

Baldwin said he closed his restaurant at 21st Street and Atlantic Ave. to new customers and those already inside were allowed to stay until it was safe to leave.

In all, seven people were injured.

According to Virginia Beach Police spokeswoman MPO Grazia Moyers, a man was shot in the leg around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue. She said the victim was uncooperative with investigators.

A second shooting occurred around 3:00 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of 33rd Street. The victim said he was sitting in a vehicle when he heard a loud noise, saw a window was shattered and realized he had been shot in the chest.

Around 3:15 a.m., police say two people were arguing at 27th Street when one allegedly struck another in the face with a gun. The weapon went off, shooting the person in the face.

Police say none of the victims appears to have life-threatening injuries.

There are no known suspects and the investigations continue. Police report that the victims gave limited details about their attackers, so investigators have little to go on.

Police are also investigating a stabbing and assaults.

Around midnight Saturday, suspects allegedly approached a man at 17th Street and Atlantic Avenue near the Dairy Queen and allegedly stabbed him in the back and neck. The victim says the stabbing was unprovoked and he didn't know the suspects. Police believe he'll recover from wounds to his back and neck.

Police say around 12:30 a.m., two people were arguing in the 2600 block of Atlantic Avenue when a man was cut on his face. Police classified the case as simple assault.

Police reported another man was cut after somebody apparently threw a bottle around 1:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Atlantic Avenue. Police say a woman was also hit by a bottle.

Police believe the stabbing victims will recover.

Police say at 2:15 a.m., someone stole a man's cell phone in the 300 block of 17th Street.

Another robbery occurred at 2:56 a.m. in the 3100 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Then, at 3:05 a.m., a man sitting in his vehicle at 22nd Street and Atlantic Avenue was robbed when armed suspects got into his vehicle and demanded property, according to police.

Moyers also says around 11:30 p.m. a man was robbed at 21st Street and Pacific Avenue near McDonald's. Moyer says the victim was approached by several suspects and the victim displayed a gun, which fell to ground and broke apart. The suspect assaulted the victim and picked up pieces of the gun. The crime is being classified as a simple assault and larceny, not a robbery, she stated.

Mayor Sessoms said there were roughly 30,000 to 40,000 people at the Oceanfront.

"When alcohol, drugs and guns come together, it's never a good mix and just one stabbing or shooting is unacceptable. However, I'm pleased with how law enforcement handled it and I expect some arrests soon," said Sessoms.

Heavy congestion led authorities to shut down I-264 eastbound at Parks Avenue from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.

"The police had a strong presence. I think that it has been reported that there wasn't a strong presence, which is wrong. Last night, we had a strong presence, and the city manager and the police chief were out there," Sessoms stated.

Councilman Bill DeSteph will conduct a town hall meeting on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center to discuss the events that led to three shootings, three stabbings and the robbery reports.

"An Army reservist and Iraq veteran who works as a cabdriver says a passenger he picked up early Friday at a Northern Virginia country club accused him of being a terrorist because he is Muslim, then fractured his jaw in an attack being described by Islamic activists as a hate crime.

Mohamed A. Salim says the passenger compared him to the men accused of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombing 11 days earlier and threatened to kill him."*

Mohamed A. Salim is a veteran- a U.S. soldier who served in Iraq and even Guantanamo Bay, before he became a cab driver in Virginia. But that didn't matter to Emerald Aviation President Ed Dahlberg, who brutally broke Salim's Jaw, saying "If you're a fucking Muslim flying jets into the fucking World Trade Center then fuck you. I will slice your fucking throat right now." Cenk ygur breaks down this disgusting story.
