Past to present, it is all history. The richest few want more. The richest few are in charge. Their plans haven't changed. Review history. Check out more videos on my channel. My reason ] for hating world bankers and the international organized crime world police state. When aren't the lying lawyers and elite not lying?

Love, or hate, Alex Jones, there is no bigger awakening and dissemination of this type of information. It is isn't just an individual. It is a forward movement as we the people are sick of tyrants, abuse, wars, and being ripped off daily for the pleasure of the world elite.

Another video about the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes, this time produced jointly by the USGS and the state of Tennessee with more of a focus on Tennessee itself.

The 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes were an intense intraplate earthquake series beginning with an initial pair of very large earthquakes on December 16, 1811. These earthquakes remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the eastern United States in recorded history. These events, as well as the seismic zone of their occurrence, were named for the Mississippi River town of New Madrid, then part of the Louisiana Territory, now within Missouri.

There are estimates that the earthquakes were felt strongly over roughly 50,000 sq mi, and moderately across nearly 1 million square miles. The historic 1906 San Francisco earthquake, by comparison, was felt moderately over roughly 6,200 sq mi.

The 1811-1812 earthquakes

The four earthquakes

December 16, 1811, 2:15 a.m. (M ~7.2 - 8.1) epicenter in northeast Arkansas. It caused only slight damage to man-made structures, mainly because of the sparse population in the epicentral area. The future location of Memphis, Tennessee experienced level IX shaking on the Mercalli intensity scale. A seismic seiche propagated upriver, and Little Prairie (a village that was on the site of the former Fort San Fernando, near the site of present-day Caruthersville, Missouri) was heavily damaged by soil liquefaction.

December 16, 1811, 8:15 a.m. (M ~7.2-8.1) epicenter in northeast Arkansas. This shock followed the first earthquake by six hours and was similar in intensity.

January 23, 1812, 9 a.m. (M ~7.0-7.8) epicenter in the Missouri Bootheel. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks. Johnson and Schweig attributed this earthquake to a rupture on the New Madrid North Fault. This may have placed strain on the Reelfoot Fault.

February 7, 1812, 4:45 a.m. (M ~7.4-8.0) epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were severely damaged, and their chimneys were toppled. This shock was definitively attributed to the Reelfoot Fault by Johnston and Schweig. Uplift along a segment of this reverse fault created temporary waterfalls on the Mississippi at Kentucky Bend, created waves that propagated upstream, and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake by obstructing streams in what is now Lake County, Tennessee.

Susan Hough, a seismologist of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has recently estimated the earthquakes' magnitudes as "right around magnitude 7. Possibly a bit below, possibly a bit above, but not as big as 7.5."

Eyewitness accounts

John Bradbury, a Fellow of the Linnean Society, was on the Mississippi on the night of December 15, 1811, and describes the tremors in great detail in his Travels in the Interior of America in the Years 1809, 1810 and 1811, published in 1817.

After supper, we went to sleep as usual: about ten o'clock, and in the night I was awakened by the most tremendous noise, accompanied by an agitation of the boat so violent, that it appeared in danger of upsetting ... I could distinctly see the river as if agitated by a storm; and although the noise was inconceivably loud and terrific, I could distinctly hear the crash of falling trees, and the screaming of the wild fowl on the river, but found that the boat was still safe at her moorings. By the time we could get to our fire, which was on a large flag in the stern of the boat, the shock had ceased; but immediately the perpendicular banks, both above and below us, began to fall into the river in such vast masses, as to nearly sink our boat by the swell they occasioned ... At day-light we had counted twenty-seven shocks.

Eliza Bryan in New Madrid, Territory of Missouri, wrote the following eyewitness account in March, 1812.

On the 16th of December, 1811, about two o'clock, a.m., we were visited by a violent shock of an earthquake, accompanied by a very awful noise resembling loud but distant thunder, but more hoarse and vibrating, which was followed in a few minutes by the complete saturation of the atmosphere, with sulphurious vapor, causing total darkness. The screams of the affrighted inhabitants running to and fro, not knowing where to go, or what to do-the cries of the fowls and beasts of every species-the cracking of trees falling, and the roaring of the Mississippi- the current of which was retrograde for a few minutes, owing as is supposed, to an irruption in its bed- formed a scene truly horrible.

John Reynolds (February 26, 1788 - May 8, 1865) who was the 4th governor of Illinois, among other political posts, mentions the earthquake in his biography My Own Times: Embracing Also the History of My Life (1855):

On the night of 16th November, 1811, an earthquake occurred, that produced great consternation amongst the people. The centre of the violence was in New Madrid, Missouri, but the whole valley of the Mississippi was violently agitated. Our family all were sleeping in a log cabin, and my father leaped out of bed crying aloud "the Indians are on the house" ... We laughed at the mistake of my father, but soon found out it was worse than the Indians. Not one in the family knew at the time that it was an earthquake. The next morning another shock made us acquainted with it, so we decided it was an earthquake. The cattle came running home bellowing with fear, and all animals were terribly alarmed on the occasion. Our house cracked and quivered, so we were fearful it would fall to the ground. In the American Bottom many chimneys were thrown down, and the church bell in Cahokia sounded by the agitation of the building. It is said the shock of an earthquake was felt in Kaskaskia in 1804, but I did not perceive it. The shocks continued for years in Illinois, and some have experienced it this year, 1855.

The Shaker diarist Samuel Swan McClelland described the effects of the earthquake on the Shaker settlement at West Union (Busro), Indiana, where the earthquakes contributed to the temporary abandonment of the westernmost Shaker community.

Consequence of the 1811-12 earthquakes

Sand blows were common throughout the area, and can still be seen from the air in cultivated fields. The shockwaves propagated efficiently through the firm midwestern bedrock, with residents as far away as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk, Virginia, awakened by intense shaking. Church bells were reported to ring as far as Boston, Massachusetts and York, Ontario (now Toronto), and sidewalks were reported to have been cracked and broken in Washington, D.C. There were also reports of toppled chimneys in Maine.

Disaster relief

A request, dated January 13, 1812, by William Clark (famous for his exploration of the American West with Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery from 1803 to 1805), then the governor of the Louisiana Territory (the territory was renamed the Missouri Territory soon after the quake to eliminate confusion with the new state of Louisiana), asked for federal relief for the "inhabitants of New Madrid County."

Whereas the Catalogue of miseries and afflictions, with which it has pleased the Supreme Being of the Universe to visit the inhabitants of the earth there are none more truly awful and destructive than Earthquakes ... The inhabitants of the late District now County of New Madrid, in this Territory, have lately been visited with several calamities of this kind, which have deluged large portions of their country and involved in the greatest distress many families, whilst others have been entirely ruined ... In the opinion of the said General Assembly provisions ought to be made by law for or cashiered to the said inhabitants relief, either out of the public fund or in some other way as may can meet to the cost demand availability of the General Government.

This is possibly the very first request that the U.S. Federal Government had received for aid from one of its territories.

Slave George murder

The earthquakes helped bring to justice the murderers of George Lewis (commonly known as "Slave George"). George was slain on the night of December 15-16, 1811 by two nephews of Thomas Jefferson, Lilburn Lewis and Isham Lewis, who were also relatives of Meriwether Lewis. After killing him with an axe in front of other slaves, George's owners intended to burn his remains, but the first New Madrid earthquake interrupted their effort, and so the corpse was interred in a brick chimney. The murder might well have escaped discovery by authorities, except that the January 23 and February 7 quakes caused the chimney to partially collapse, exposing George's remains. Lilburn and Isham Lewis were quickly investigated, arrested and charged. Lilburn killed himself; Isham escaped from jail and probably died during the War of 1812.

Geologic setting

The underlying cause of New Madrid earthquakes is not well understood, but modern faulting seems to be related to an ancient geologic feature buried under the Mississippi River alluvial plain, known as the Reelfoot Rift.

Reelfoot rift

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is made up of reactivated faults that formed when what is now North America began to split or rift apart during the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia in the Neoproterozoic Era (about 750 million years ago). Faults were created along the rift and igneous rocks formed from magma that was being pushed towards the surface. The resulting rift system failed but has remained as an aulacogen (a scar or zone of weakness) deep underground. Another unsuccessful attempt at rifting 200 million years ago created additional faults, which made the area weaker. The resulting geological structures make up the Reelfoot Rift, and have since been deeply buried by younger sediments. But the ancient faults appear to have made the rocks deep in the Earth's crust in the New Madrid area mechanically weaker than much of the rest of North America.

This weakness, possibly combined with focusing effects from mechanically stronger igneous rocks nearby, allows the relatively small east-west compressive forces that exist in the North American plate to reactivate old faults, making the area prone to earthquakes.

Since other rifts are known to occur in North America's stress environment but not all are associated with modern earthquakes, (for example the Midcontinent Rift System that stretches from Minnesota to Kansas), other processes could be at work to locally increase mechanical stress on the New Madrid faults. Stress changes associated with bending of the lithosphere caused by the melting of continental glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age, has been considered to play a role, as well as downward pull from sinking igneous rock bodies below the fault. It has also been suggested that some form of heating in the lithosphere below the area may be making deep rocks more plastic, which concentrates compressive stress in the shallower subsurface area where the faulting occurs. There may be local stress from a change in the flow of the mantle beneath the NMSZ, caused by the sinking Farallon Plate, according to one model.

Seismic zone

When epicenters of modern earthquakes are plotted on a map, three trends become apparent. First is the general northeast-southwest trend paralleling the trend of the Reelfoot Rift, in Arkansas, south of where the epicenters turn northwest. This is a right-lateral strike-slip fault system parallel to the Reelfoot Rift.

The second is the southeast to northwest trend that occurs just southwest of New Madrid. This trend is a stepover thrust fault known as the Reelfoot Fault, associated with the Tiptonville dome and the impoundment of Reelfoot Lake. Epicenter locations on this fault are more spread out because the fault surface is inclined and dips into the ground, towards the south, at around forty degrees. Slip is towards the northeast. Motion on this fault in the 1811-1812 series created waterfalls on the Mississippi.

The third line, extending northeast from the northwestern end of the Reelfoot Fault is another right-lateral strike-slip fault, termed New Madrid North.

The epicenters of over 4,000 earthquakes can be identified from seismic measurements taken since 1974. It can be seen that the earthquakes originate from the seismic activity of the Reelfoot Rift. The zone which is colored in red on the map is called the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Recent earthquakes

4000 earthquake reports since 1974

The zone remains active today. In recent decades minor earthquakes have continued. New forecasts estimate a 7 to 10 percent chance, in the next 50 years, of a repeat of a major earthquake like those that occurred in 1811-1812, which likely had magnitudes of between 7.5 and 8.0. There is a 25 to 40 percent chance, in a 50-year time span, of a magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquake.

Recurrence potential

In a report filed in November 2008, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States," further predicting "widespread and catastrophic" damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake or greater would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure.

The potential for the recurrence of large earthquakes and their impact today on densely populated cities in and around the seismic zone has prompted research devoted to understanding the New Madrid Seismic Zone. By studying evidence of past quakes and closely monitoring ground motion and current earthquake activity, scientists attempt to understand their causes and recurrence intervals.

The lack of apparent land movement along the New Madrid fault system has long puzzled scientists. In 2009 two studies based on eight years of GPS measurements indicated that the faults were moving at no more than 0.2 millimeters (0.0079 in) a year. In contrast, the rate of slippage on the San Andreas Fault averages as much as 37 mm (1.5 in) a year across California.

Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato (The Mummies of Guanajuato)

The Mummies of Guanajuato are a number of naturally mummified bodies
interred during a cholera outbreak around Guanajuato, Mexico in 1833.

These mummies were discovered in a cemetery located in Guanajuato, which has made the city one of the biggest tourist attractions in Mexico. All of these mummies were disinterred between 1865 and
1958, when the law required relatives to pay a tax in order to keep the bodies in the cemetery. If the relatives could not pay this tax, they would lose the right to the burial place, and the dead bodies were disinterred. Ninety percent of the bodies in the cemetery were disinterred because their relatives did not pay the tax.

However, only 2% of them were naturally mummified. The mummified bodies were stored in a building and in the 1900s the mummies began attracting tourists. Cemetery workers began charging people a few pesos to enter the building where bones and mummies were stored. This place was turned into a museum called El Museo De Las Momias, The Mummies' Museum. A law prohibiting the disinterring of more mummies was passed in 1958, but this museum still exhibits the
original mummies.

Due to the deadliness of the epidemic, more cemeteries had to be opened in San Cayetano as well as Ca~nada de Marfil. Many of the bodies were buried immediately to control the spread of the
disease; in some cases, the dying were buried alive by accident. As a result, some of the mummies have horrific expressions attesting to their death in the tombs, though most expressions became fixed postmortem.

One of the mummies who was buried alive was Ignacia Aguilar. She suffered from a strange sickness that made her heart appear to stop for one day on several occasions. During one of these incidents, her heart appeared to stop for more than the usual time. Thinking she had died, her
relatives decided to bury her. When her body was disinterred, it was noticed that she was facing down, biting her arm, and that there was a lot of blood in her mouth.

The first mummy was put on display in 1865. It was the body of Dr. Remigio Leroy. The museum, containing at least 108 corpses, is located above the spot where the mummies were first discovered. Numerous mummies can be seen throughout the exhibition, of varying sizes.

The museum is known to have the smallest mummy in the world, a fetus from a pregnant woman who fell victim to cholera. Some of the mummies can be seen wearing parts of their clothingfrom when they were buried.

The mummies of Guanajuato have been a notable part of Mexican popular culture, echoing the national holiday "The Day of the Dead" (El Dia de los Muertos). A well known B movie called Santo vs.

The Mummies of Guanajuato (1970) pitted the well-known Mexican professional wrestler Santo and several others in a battle to a predictable finish.

Famous author Ray Bradbury visited the catacombs of Guanajuato with his friend Grant Beach and wrote the short story "Next In Line" about his experience. In the introduction to The Stories of Ray Bradbury he wrote the following about this story: "The experience so wounded and terrified me, I could hardly wait to flee Mexico. I had nightmares about dying and having to remain in the halls
of the dead with those propped and wired bodies. In order to purge my terror, instantly, I wrote 'The Next in Line.' One of the few times thatan experience yielded results almost on the spot."

In the late 1970s, filmmaker Werner Herzog took footage of a number of the mummies and used it for the title sequence of his film Nosferatu the Vampyre, evidently, in order to create, as potently as possible, a morbid, eerie atmosphere.

In 2007, the Mayor of Guanajuato, Eduardo Hicks, M.D., invited three scientists, including a forensic anthropologist, to do detailed studies of 22 of the museum's mummies. See the references below for a preliminary report and some details of the results of those studied. A final report has yet to be issued and more research is in progress.

Toyah Willcox wrote a song about the mummies in 1980 called "Mummies" There are 119 mummies on display. The mummies are some of the strangest ones ever put on display. Some are clothed while others only have shoes. There is a wide range on age, from infants to the elderly.

NASA's Curiosity was taken from the rover's Bradbury Landing site inside
Gale Crater, Mars, using the left and right eyes of its Navigation
camera. Between the rover on the right, and its shadow on the left,
looms the rover's eventual target: Mount Sharp. The mountain's highest
peak is not visible to the rover from the landing site.

A touching short Soviet Russian animation set in the future post apocalyptic world. It's taken from a short story in Ray Bradbury's famous book, "The Martian Chronicles" (1950) which was also made into a three part TV special in 1980. This Uzbek Soviet animation was made in the early 1980s.

Ray Bradbury died yesterday at age 91, RIP.

LOS ANGELES - Ray Bradbury, the science fiction-fantasy master who
transformed his childhood dreams and Cold War fears into telepathic
Martians, lovesick sea monsters, and, in uncanny detail, the high-tech,
book-burning future of "Fahrenheit 451," has died. He was 91.
He died Tuesday night, his daughter said Wednesday. Alexandra Bradbury did not have additional details.

Although slowed in recent years by a stroke that meant he had to
use a wheelchair, Bradbury remained active into his 90s, turning out new
novels, plays, screenplays and a volume of poetry. He wrote every day
in the basement office of his Cheviot Hills home and appeared from time
to time at bookstores, public library fundraisers and other literary
events around Los Angeles.
His writings ranged from horror and mystery to humour and
sympathetic stories about the Irish, blacks and Mexican-Americans.
Bradbury also scripted John Huston's 1956 film version of "Moby Dick"
and wrote for "The Twilight Zone" and other television programs,
including "The Ray Bradbury Theater," for which he adapted dozens of his
works.
"What I have always been is a hybrid author," Bradbury said in
2009. "I am completely in love with movies, and I am completely in love
with theatre, and I am completely in love with libraries."
Bradbury broke through in 1950 with "The Martian Chronicles," a
series of intertwined stories that satirized capitalism, racism and
superpower tensions as it portrayed Earth colonizers destroying an
idyllic Martian civilization.
Like Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" and the Robert Wise film
"The Day the Earth Stood Still," Bradbury's book was a Cold War
morality tale in which imagined lives on other planets serve as
commentary on human behaviour on Earth. "The Martian Chronicles" has
been published in more than 30 languages, was made into a TV miniseries
and inspired a computer game.
"The Martian Chronicles" prophesized the banning of books,
especially works of fantasy, a theme Bradbury would take on fully in the
1953 release, "Fahrenheit 451." Inspired by the Cold War, the rise of
television and the author's passion for libraries, it was an apocalyptic
narrative of nuclear war abroad and empty pleasure at home, with
firefighters assigned to burn books instead of putting blazes out (451
degrees Fahrenheit, Bradbury had been told, was the temperature at which
texts went up in flames).
It was Bradbury's only true science-fiction work, according to the
author, who said all his other works should have been classified as
fantasy. "It was a book based on real facts and also on my hatred for
people who burn books," he told The Associated Press in 2002.
A futuristic classic often taught alongside George Orwell's "1984"
and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," Bradbury's novel anticipated
iPods, interactive television, electronic surveillance and live,
sensational media events, including televised police pursuits. Francois
Truffaut directed a 1966 movie version and the book's title was
referenced -- without Bradbury's permission, the author complained --
for Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 9-11."
Although involved in many futuristic projects, including the New
York World's Fair of 1964 and the Spaceship Earth display at Walt Disney
World in Florida, Bradbury was deeply attached to the past. He refused
to drive a car or fly, telling the AP that witnessing a fatal traffic
accident as a child left behind a permanent fear of automobiles. In his
younger years, he got around by bicycle or roller-skates.
"I'm not afraid of machines," he told Writer's Digest in 1976. "I
don't think the robots are taking over. I think the men who play with
toys have taken over. And if we don't take the toys out of their hands,
we're fools."
Bradbury's literary style was honed in pulp magazines and
influenced by Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe, and he became the rare
science fiction writer treated seriously by the literary world. In 2007,
he received a special Pulitzer Prize citation "for his distinguished,
prolific and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science
fiction and fantasy." Seven years earlier, he received an honorary
National Book Award medal for lifetime achievement, an honour given to
Philip Roth and Arthur Miller among others.
"Everything I've done is a surprise, a wonderful surprise,"
Bradbury said during his acceptance speech in 2000. "I sometimes get up
at night when I can't sleep and walk down into my library and open one
of my books and read a paragraph and say, 'My God, did I write that? Did
I write that?', because it's still a surprise."
Other honours included an Academy Award nomination for an animated
film, "Icarus Montgolfier Wright," and an Emmy for his teleplay of "The
Halloween Tree." His fame even extended to the moon, where Apollo
astronauts named a crater "Dandelion Crater," in honour of "Dandelion
Wine," his beloved coming-of-age novel, and an asteroid was named 9766
Bradbury.
Born Ray Douglas Bradbury on Aug. 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Ill., the
author once described himself as "that special freak, the man with the
child inside who remembers all." He claimed to have total recall of his
life, dating even to his final weeks in his mother's womb.
His father, Leonard, a power company lineman, was a descendant of
Mary Bradbury, who was tried for witchcraft at Salem, Mass. The author's
mother, Esther, read him the "Wizard of Oz." His Aunt Neva introduced
him to Edgar Allan Poe and gave him a love of autumn, with its pumpkin
picking and Halloween costumes.
"If I could have chosen my birthday, Halloween would be it," he said over the years.

Nightmares that plagued him as a boy also stocked his imagination,
as did his youthful delight with the Buck Rogers and Tarzan comic
strips, early horror films, Tom Swift adventure books and the works of
Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
"The great thing about my life is that everything I've done is a result of what I was when I was 12 or 13," he said in 1982.

Bradbury's family moved to Los Angeles in 1934. He became a movie
buff and a voracious reader. "I never went to college, so I went to the
library," he explained.
He tried to write at least 1,000 words a day, and sold his first
story in 1941. He submitted work to pulp magazines until he was finally
accepted by such upscale publications as The New Yorker. Bradbury's
first book, a short story collection called "Dark Carnival," was
published in 1947.
He was so poor during those years that he didn't have an office or
even a telephone. "When the phone rang in the gas station right across
the alley from our house, I'd run to answer it," he said.
He wrote "Fahrenheit 451" at the UCLA library, on typewriters that
rented for 10 cents a half hour. He said he carried a sack full of
dimes to the library and completed the book in nine days, at a cost of
$9.80.
Few writers could match the inventiveness of his plots: A boy
outwits a vampire by stuffing him with silver coins; a dinosaur mistakes
a fog horn for a mating call (filmed as "The Beast From 20,000
Fathoms"); Ernest Hemingway is flown back to life on a time machine. In
"The Illustrated Man," one of his most famous stories, a man's tattoo
foretells a horrifying deed -- he will murder his wife.
A dynamic speaker with a booming, distinctive voice, he could be
blunt and gruff. But Bradbury was also a gregarious and friendly man,
approachable in public and often generous with his time to readers as
well as fellow writers.
In 2009, at a lecture celebrating the first anniversary of a small
library in Southern California's San Gabriel Valley, Bradbury exhorted
his listeners to live their lives as he said he had lived his: "Do what
you love and love what you do."
"If someone tells you to do something for money, tell them to go to hell," he shouted to raucous applause.

Until near the end of his life, Bradbury resisted one of the
innovations he helped anticipate: electronic books, likening them to
burnt metal and urging readers to stick to the old-fashioned pleasures
of ink and paper. But in late 2011, as the rights to "Fahrenheit 451"
were up for renewal, he gave in and allowed his most famous novel to
come out in digital form. In return, he received a great deal of money
and a special promise from Simon & Schuster: The publisher agreed to
make the e-book available to libraries, the only Simon & Schuster
e-book at the time that library patrons were allowed to download.
Bradbury is survived by his four daughters. Marguerite Bradbury, his wife of 56 years, died in 2003.

NZ police shooting at shark that killed a swimmer

Father-of-one Adam Strange, 46, was killed by a 4-metre long shark while swimming off the popular Auckland beach of Muriwai yesterday afternoon.

Nigel Bradbury from the nearby town of Kumeu was at the beach with his daughter when he filmed the dramatic moment on his phone.

Dad dragged out to sea in shark feeding frenzy

''I was going to have a swim but we decided to have a picnic instead, and then we saw the inflatable (rescue boat) racing along the beach along with the quad bike towards Maori Bay,'' he told The New Zealand Herald.

Mr Bradbury said a police car parked next to him and within three minutes the police officer was in the rescue boat shooting at the shark to release Mr Strange's body.

''You could see it clearly, even though it was a fair way offshore. The water spraying up when he fired the gun - rapid fire and then you could hear the sound,'' he said.

Mr Bradbury said the officer shot at the shark in three rapid bursts.

''I've never heard anything like that before," he said.

It took about 30 minutes to recover the body, with witnesses claiming the shark refused to let go until police shot at it.

Police said it was possible up to three sharks had been feeding on fish and birds in the water and Mr Strange swam straight into their path.

He said the shark that attacked the man was believed to be a 4m great white.

Mr Strange was a TV commercial director and had worked around the world on several projects.

His first short film, Aphrodite's Farm, won the prestigious Crystal Bear award for Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival.

In a statement released last night Strange's family said they are "grieving the loss of a glorious and great father, husband and friend", TVNZ reported.

''We are in deep shock,'' they said.

Muriwai Beach and others nearby will remain closed until Saturday following the attack and lifeguards will continue to search the ocean for any sign of sharks.

Shark deaths are uncommon in NZ, with only 14 known fatal shark attacks since records began about 1837.

The last death was in 2009, when a kayaker was mauled by a great white, but it is not known whether he drowned before the shark found him.

Before that the last death was in 1976.

The Curiosity rover is a car-sized, robotic rover exploring Gale Crater on Mars , as part of NASA 's Mars Science Laboratory mission (MSL).

Curiosity was launched from Cape Canaveral on November 26, 2011 at 10:02 EST aboard the MSL spacecraft and successfully landed on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crater on Mars on August 6, 2012, 05:17 UTC. The Bradbury Landing site was less than 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the center of the rover's touchdown target after a 563,000,000 km (350,000,000 mi) journey.

The rover's goals include investigation of the Martian climate , geology , and whether Mars could have ever supported life , including investigation of the role of water and planetary habitability , as well as preparation for future human exploration.
