Its always about her, I guess. The bigger question here though is, how the hell is this news?????

By Radhika Sanghani

3:23PM BST 19 Jun 2013

Cherie Blair's half-sister, 45, said she felt like men want to hit her when they see her wearing her traditional Islamic dress and a hijab head-covering.

Ms Booth told ITV's Daybreak: "When I came to Islam two years ago and I first put on the scarf I was nervous about going on the Underground, I thought everyone is going to see me differently, and everyone was beautiful towards me.

"I was invisible for a few weeks and then I noticed that British people were smiling, same as we always do, we're really good at that, we're really good at absorbing and accepting people.

"But honestly, in the last two weeks I've been getting public transport and there are grown men looking like they want to hit Muslim women, and I'm a tall, white woman, I'm not easily threatened, but I have felt scared at times, so there is a change unfortunately."

Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, was hacked to death on the streets of Woolwich last month as he walked back to his barracks wearing a Help for Heroes top.

Since his killing, an Islamic centre has been burned down in Muswell Hill, north London, as has an Islamic school in Chislehurst, Kent, in suspected attacks against Muslims.

Ms Booth's brother-in-law, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, previously said there is a 'problem within Islam' which allows the seeds of extremism to be sown in the wake of the killing.

Asked if he was right, Ms Booth replied: 'Absolutely not, and I think it's very dangerous to take a summary of a religion from a man who's overseen the invasion of several Muslim countries, and overseen a war where a million people whom are Muslim have been killed and millions displaced, so I wouldn't take that as a kind of basis for any information on Islam.'

Ms Booth, who married Sohale Ahmed, 49, in a Muslim ceremony earlier this year, talked about the benefits of being a Muslim.

She said: "We say it's a clean life, no drinking, I don't go out to pubs, you're more spiritual and calmer, and hopefully kinder with people, that's what it's all about, doing good at a community level."

Michael Adebolajo, 28, of Romford, and Michael Adebowale, 22, of Greenwich, have both been charged with murder following the killing of Lee Rigby on May 22.

They have been remanded in custody.

U.S. charges two New Yorkers with building 'death ray' aimed at killing 'enemies of Israel'Suspect with links to Ku Klux Klan approached Albany synagogue and Jewish group to help in bizarre plot to build 'Hiroshima on a light switch.' Court affidavit also links motive to results of 2012 elections.By Chemi Shalev
Jun.20, 2013

U.S. Federal authorities in Albany New York have charged two men with conspiring to manufacture a remote-controlled "death ray" to be used against "enemies of Israel" - mainly Muslims.

Glenn Scott Crawford, 49, of Galway, New York and Eric J. Feight, 54, of Hudson, New York, were arrested by the FBI following a 15 month covert investigation in which Federal agents posed as co-conspirators in an attempt to build "a mobile, remotely operated, radiation emitting device capable of killing human targets silently and from a distance with lethal doses of radiation," according to an affidavit submitted to the court by FBI investigator Geoffrey Kent.

The investigation was launched in April 2012, after Crawford, who is employed as an industrial mechanic for General Electric in Schenectady, allegedly contacted an Albany synagogue and an unidentified Jewish organization asking to speak with a person "who might be willing to help him with a type of technology that could be used by Israel to defeat its enemies - specifically by killing them while they slept."

Crawford, who is affiliated with several branches of the Ku Klux Klan, succeeded in persuading a "high-ranking" KKK leader in North Carolina to help fund the project. He also recruited Feight, who is described as "an outside GE contractor with mechanical and engineering skills" to design and build a remote control apparatus that would allow the truck-mounted, industrial strength X-ray apparatus to be activated from a distance.

According to Kent's affidavit, Crawford and Feight were recorded referring to their intended victims as "medical waste." Crawford described his contraption as "Hiroshima on a light switch" saying that it would cause "everything with respiration to be dead by morning."

"How much sweeter could there be than a big stack of smelly bodies?" he is quoted as asking.

In meeting held after November, 2012 both Crawford and Feight are quoted as ascribing their motives to the outcome of the elections. "I am in this for my kids," Crawford says. "After this last election, the electoral process is dead. So now, all that is left is to make the (expletive) pay."

Later he says: "This administration has done more to enable a government sponsored invasion than the press can cover up. Be pissed, but get the word out that Obama's policies caused this..."

According to Kent's affidavit, Crawford's intended targets included "a Muslim organization, a political figure, and a political party."

And while it may sound like a demented science fiction fantasy, Kent asserts in his affidavit that "experts have advised the investigation that the remote initiation device and x-ray systems Crawford plans to weaponize would produce a lethal, and functioning, remotely controlled radiation emitting device."

"A central feature of the weaponized radiation device is that the target(s), and those around them, would not immediately be aware they had absorbed lethal doses of radiation, and the harmful effects of that radiation would not become apparent until days after the exposure," Kent asserted.

Posing as funders and participants in the scheme, undercover agents of the Albany FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force consulted, funded and purchased some of the equipment needed to build the "death ray." The Department of Justice, in a press statement, said that the defendants were unaware of the fact that the "device was rendered inoperable and posed no danger to the public."

The two, according to the affidavit, expressed reservations at various times about personally "pulling the trigger." Perhaps this is the reason that they have only been charged with "conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists," crimes for which they could face a $250,000 fine and up to 15 years in jail.

The sensation of imminent death - "you probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?" - was now-famously discussed in an episode called "Soprano Home Movies." This same episode was reportedly repeated, out of sequence, the week before the finale. And the same exact scene - this same discussion of how death would be experienced - was also apparently excerpted in flashback in the second-to-last episode.

Muslim man accused mom of trying to "poison" him
JUNE 19--A Pennsylvania man allegedly threatened to kill his mother because he believed she tried to "poison" him by serving pork, "which was against his Muslim religion," investigators report.

Joshua Lee Coffey, 25, confronted his mother Sherri last week in the family's home in St. Marys, a central Pennsylvania city.

Coffey accused his mother of "attempting to poison him," noting that "the meat he was given to eat was pork, which was against his pork religion," according to a probable cause affidavit . A criminal complaint alleges that Coffey "did threaten to kill his mother...due to his displeasure with the dinner served to him."

During the ensuing argument, Coffey allegedly threatened to kill his mother and her boyfriend (with whom she had been eating dinner in her bedroom).

At one point, Coffey went to the kitchen and retrieved a 10-inch kitchen knife. He then returned to the bedroom and "held the knife in a threatening manner," prompting his mother to "flee out the window of the bedroom onto the roof." Sherri Coffey subsequently called 911 and then went to a neighbor's home to await the arrival of officers.

According to cops, Coffey held the knife to the throat of Mark Blair, his mother's boyfriend, and threatened to kill him if his mother called the police. When cops reached the Coffey residence, they found Joshua, carrying the knife, in the backyard. After complying with an order to drop the weapon, Coffey was arrested.

Charged with simple assault and making terroristic threats, both misdemeanors, Coffey was booked into the Elk County jail in lieu of $5000 bail. He is scheduled for a June 25 preliminary hearing in District Court. (3 pages)

British Soldiers families to sue MoD over Iraq deaths

The families of soldiers killed in Iraq have been told they can sue the Ministry of Defence for negligence.

Legal action was brought by relatives of three men killed by roadside bombs while in Snatch Land Rovers and another killed while in a Challenger tank.

At least 37 UK soldiers have died in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan while travelling in the lightly armoured Snatch Land Rover; its vulnerability has led some soldiers to call it the "mobile coffin".

The families of the three soldiers who died in the vehicles while on duty in Iraq want to make claims for damages under the Human Rights Act.

The Ministry of Defence had argued the claims should be struck out because the soldiers were not covered by the legislation once they had left their base. But the Supreme Court rejected this, concluding the soldiers were within the UK's jurisdiction at the time of their deaths and so were subject to human rights legislation.

The MoD had argued that there was "combat immunity" for troops in action and it was not "fair, just or reasonable" to impose a duty of care on the MoD when soldiers were on the battlefield.

The highest court in the land has now ruled the MoD, as employer, must accept that it owes a duty of care to properly equip service personnel who go to war.

The families' claims will now be able to proceed to trial to determine if the MoD owes damages.

Costa Rica says ring allegedly sold kidneys to patients in Israel, East Europe; Health Ministry: No knowledge of reported cases.By Shlomo Papirblat and Dan Even
Jun.20, 2013
5:00 AM

Costa Rican authorities announced on Wednesday that they had broken up an international organ trafficking ring that worked with Israeli doctors and specialized in selling kidneys to patients in Israel and East Europe.

Costa Rica's Attorney General's Office said Israeli doctors had performed kidney-removal operations on some Costa Rican "donors" who sold their organs. Authorities also said the key suspect arrested in Costa Rica, a physician, had been in touch with Israeli doctors to match up Costa Rican kidney donors with Israeli recipients.

Performing such operations is a grave felony.

Costa Rican police together with Interpol are now investigating the case of a young woman who had been sent to Israel to donate a kidney, felt bad on the flight back, was taken off it at an interim stop and died.

Costa Rican authorities did not name any of the Israeli doctors alleged to be involved in the ring. Israel's Health Ministry said it knew nothing about the affair.

In recent years Costa Rica has served as a destination for Israeli patients needing kidney transplants. The price for a kidney transplant on the black market is estimated at some NIS 700,000 per kidney.

San Jose police on Wednesday arrested Dr. Francisco Mora Palma, head of nephrology at the large Calderon Guardia Hospital, and raided a number of medical laboratories and clinics suspected of carrying out tests for the network's doctors.

Attorney General Jorge Chavarria said the two people arrested - Mora Palma and an employee at Costa Rica's Public Security Ministry - were the "tip of the iceberg" of the organ trafficking network.

Mora Palma was in touch with Israeli doctors and tested the suitability of the local residents whose organs were to be harvested in Israel, the Attorney General's Office said.

Chavarria said the network's doctors sent some of the "donors" to Israel to undergo the operation to have a kidney removed, while others had it removed in Costa Rica.

Sources involved in the investigation said they know of cases in which Israeli patients had been flown to Costa Rica to undergo surgery, without reporting to the health authorities.

Israel's Health Ministry said in response to the report from Costa Rica that "the cases mentioned are not familiar and the Health Ministry does not know of them."

It added: "Since 2008, when the New Organ Transplant Law was enacted, the health maintenance organizations and insurance companies stopped funding organ transplants

World Exclusive: US urges UK and France to join in supplying arms to Syrian rebels as MPs fear that UK will be drawn into growing conflict

Robert Fisk

Sunday, 16 June 2013 Washington's decision to arm Syria's Sunni Muslim rebels has plunged America into the great Sunni-Shia conflict of the Islamic Middle East, entering a struggle that now dwarfs the Arab revolutions which overthrew dictatorships across the region.

For the first time, all of America's 'friends' in the region are Sunni Muslims and all of its enemies are Shiites. Breaking all President Barack Obama's rules of disengagement, the US is now fully engaged on the side of armed groups which include the most extreme Sunni Islamist movements in the Middle East.

The Independent on Sunday has learned that a military decision has been taken in Iran - even before last week's presidential election - to send a first contingent of 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad's forces against the largely Sunni rebellion that has cost almost 100,000 lives in just over two years. Iran is now fully committed to preserving Assad's regime, according to pro-Iranian sources which have been deeply involved in the Islamic Republic's security, even to the extent of proposing to open up a new 'Syrian' front on the Golan Heights against Israel.

In years to come, historians will ask how America - after its defeat in Iraq and its humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan scheduled for 2014 - could have so blithely aligned itself with one side in a titanic Islamic struggle stretching back to the seventh century death of the Prophet Mohamed. The profound effects of this great schism, between Sunnis who believe that the father of Mohamed's wife was the new caliph of the Muslim world and Shias who regard his son in law Ali as his rightful successor - a seventh century battle swamped in blood around the present-day Iraqi cities of Najaf and Kerbala - continue across the region to this day. A 17th century Archbishop of Canterbury, George Abbott, compared this Muslim conflict to that between "Papists and Protestants".

America's alliance now includes the wealthiest states of the Arab Gulf, the vast Sunni territories between Egypt and Morocco, as well as Turkey and the fragile British-created monarchy in Jordan. King Abdullah of Jordan - flooded, like so many neighbouring nations, by hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees - may also now find himself at the fulcrum of the Syrian battle. Up to 3,000 American 'advisers' are now believed to be in Jordan, and the creation of a southern Syria 'no-fly zone' - opposed by Syrian-controlled anti-aircraft batteries - will turn a crisis into a 'hot' war. So much for America's 'friends'.

Its enemies include the Lebanese Hizballah, the Alawite Shiite regime in Damascus and, of course, Iran. And Iraq, a largely Shiite nation which America 'liberated' from Saddam Hussein's Sunni minority in the hope of balancing the Shiite power of Iran, has - against all US predictions - itself now largely fallen under Tehran's influence and power. Iraqi Shiites as well as Hizballah members, have both fought alongside Assad's forces.

Washington's excuse for its new Middle East adventure - that it must arm Assad's enemies because the Damascus regime has used sarin gas against them - convinces no-one in the Middle East. Final proof of the use of gas by either side in Syria remains almost as nebulous as President George W. Bush's claim that Saddam's Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

For the real reason why America has thrown its military power behind Syria's Sunni rebels is because those same rebels are now losing their war against Assad. The Damascus regime's victory this month in the central Syrian town of Qusayr, at the cost of Hizballah lives as well as those of government forces, has thrown the Syrian revolution into turmoil, threatening to humiliate American and EU demands for Assad to abandon power. Arab dictators are supposed to be deposed - unless they are the friendly kings or emirs of the Gulf - not to be sustained. Yet Russia has given its total support to Assad, three times vetoing UN Security Council resolutions that might have allowed the West to intervene directly in the civil war.

In the Middle East, there is cynical disbelief at the American contention that it can distribute arms - almost certainly including anti-aircraft missiles - only to secular Sunni rebel forces in Syria represented by the so-called Free Syria Army. The more powerful al-Nusrah Front, allied to al-Qaeda, dominates the battlefield on the rebel side and has been blamed for atrocities including the execution of Syrian government prisoners of war and the murder of a 14-year old boy for blasphemy. They will be able to take new American weapons from their Free Syria Army comrades with little effort.

From now on, therefore, every suicide bombing in Damascus - every war crime committed by the rebels - will be regarded in the region as Washington's responsibility. The very Sunni-Wahabi Islamists who killed thousands of Americans on 11th September, 2011 - who are America's greatest enemies as well as Russia's - are going to be proxy allies of the Obama administration. This terrible irony can only be exacerbated by Russian President Vladimir Putin's adament refusal to tolerate any form of Sunni extremism. His experience in Chechenya, his anti-Muslim rhetoric - he has made obscene remarks about Muslim extremists in a press conference in Russian - and his belief that Russia's old ally in Syria is facing the same threat as Moscow fought in Chechenya, plays a far greater part in his policy towards Bashar al-Assad than the continued existence of Russia's naval port at the Syrian Mediterranean city of Tartous.

For the Russians, of course, the 'Middle East' is not in the 'east' at all, but to the south of Moscow; and statistics are all-important. The Chechen capital of Grozny is scarcely 500 miles from the Syrian frontier. Fifteen per cent of Russians are Muslim. Six of the Soviet Union's communist republics had a Muslim majority, 90 per cent of whom were Sunni. And Sunnis around the world make up perhaps 85 per cent of all Muslims. For a Russia intent on repositioning itself across a land mass that includes most of the former Soviet Union, Sunni Islamists of the kind now fighting the Assad regime are its principal antagonists.

Iranian sources say they liaise constantly with Moscow, and that while Hizballah's overall withdrawal from Syria is likely to be completed soon - with the maintenance of the militia's 'intelligence' teams inside Syria - Iran's support for Damascus will grow rather than wither. They point out that the Taliban recently sent a formal delegation for talks in Tehran and that America will need Iran's help in withdrawing from Afghanistan. The US, the Iranians say, will not be able to take its armour and equipment out of the country during its continuing war against the Taliban without Iran's active assistance. One of the sources claimed - not without some mirth -- that the French were forced to leave 50 tanks behind when they left because they did not have Tehran's help.

It is a sign of the changing historical template in the Middle East that within the framework of old Cold War rivalries between Washington and Moscow, Israel's security has taken second place to the conflict in Syria. Indeed, Israel's policies in the region have been knocked askew by the Arab revolutions, leaving its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, hopelessly adrift amid the historic changes.

Only once over the past two years has Israel fully condemned atrocities committed by the Assad regime, and while it has given medical help to wounded rebels on the Israeli-Syrian border, it fears an Islamist caliphate in Damascus far more than a continuation of Assad's rule. One former Israel intelligence commander recently described Assad as "Israel's man in Damascus". Only days before President Mubarak was overthrown, both Netanyahu and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia called Washington to ask Obama to save the Egyptian dictator. In vain.

If the Arab world has itself been overwhelmed by the two years of revolutions, none will have suffered from the Syrian war in the long term more than the Palestinians. The land they wish to call their future state has been so populated with Jewish Israeli colonists that it can no longer be either secure or 'viable'. 'Peace' envoy Tony Blair's attempts to create such a state have been laughable. A future 'Palestine' would be a Sunni nation. But today, Washington scarcely mentions the Palestinians.

Another of the region's supreme ironies is that Hamas, supposedly the 'super-terrorists' of Gaza, have abandoned Damascus and now support the Gulf Arabs' desire to crush Assad. Syrian government forces claim that Hamas has even trained Syrian rebels in the manufacture and use of home-made rockets.

In Arab eyes, Israel's 2006 war against the Shia Hizballah was an attempt to strike at the heart of Iran. The West's support for Syrian rebels is a strategic attempt to crush Iran. But Iran is going to take the offensive. Even for the Middle East, these are high stakes. Against this fearful background, the Palestinian tragedy continues.

Can you say cover-up or revenge??

Michael Hastings, whose stunning 2010 report for Rolling Stone led to the
removal of Gen. Stanley McChrystal as head of coalition forces in Afghanistan,
died in a fiery car crash Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to numerous media
reports.
He was 33.

Hastings' death was announced by BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, who
praised the journalist as "fearless," saying in a statement that he possessed
"an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his
readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians."
In "The Runaway General," published by Rolling Stone in June 2010, Hastings
quoted McChrystal and members of his staff making unprofessional comments about
several senior U.S. officials, including Vice President Joe Biden and
then-National Security Adviser James Jones, a retired Marine general. President
Obama relieved McChrystal as a result, and the general retired not long
after.
Following the story's publication, Hastings was criticized by members of
McChrystal's inner circle, who claimed most of the inflammatory comments were
made by junior staffers and during discussions believed to be off the record. He
was later denied a subsequent request to embed with U.S. forces in Afghanistan,
but defended his work and the means by which he reported it.
At a media conference in Washington later that year, Hastings said he took
more flak from fellow journalists than from within the military.
"When someone who's not part of the club comes in and does a story ... people
get very territorial about their field," he said in November 2010. "And they'll
try to frame it as though it's about journalism's ethics or it's about ground
rules. It's not. It's about power, it's about who has the authority."
Hastings' work appeared in numerous publications, including Newsweek and The
Washington Post. He also authored multiple books, including this year's "The
Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in
Afghanistan."
He is survived by his wife.

Ancient Toilet Reveals Parasites in Crusader Poop

By Megan Gannon, News Editor
LiveScience.com
Intestinal parasites have been found lurking in ancient poop in the toilet of a medieval castle in western Cyprus, scientists report.

The findings paint a less than pretty picture of the health and hygiene of crusaders stationed on the Mediterranean island 800 years ago. Poor sanitation likely meant that food and water supplies were contaminated by fecal material, allowing parasitic infections to spread, the study suggests.

Short-lived latrine

Researchers from the University of Cambridge dug into the pit of dried-out waste under a latrine in the remains of Saranda Kolones(Greek for "Forty Columns") at Paphos, a city at the southwestern tip of Cyprus and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Overlooking Paphos harbor, and next to a complex of Roman villas with remarkably intact floor mosaics, Saranda Kolones was long thought to be a temple because of the granite columns that littered its ruins. But excavations in the 1950s revealed that it was actually a short-lived concentric castle.

English King Richard the Lionheart sold the island of Cyprus to the Frankish crusader Guy de Lusignan in May 1192. Archaeologists believe the Franks built Saranda Kolones to defend Paphos harbor soon after their occupation of the island began. But in 1222, the city was rocked by a powerfulearthquake thought to be at least 7.0 in magnitude. Much of the fortress was left in ruins, never to be rebuilt, but the latrines on its lower floors survived.

These toilets were carved to fit the human form, with a half moon-shaped hole in the seat leading to a sewer below. Cambridge researchers Evilena Anastasiou and Piers Mitchell, who study ancient parasites, collected samples from one of those cesspools, rehydrated the waste and strained it through a micro-sieve to catch parasite eggs, each smaller than a tenth of a millimeter.

Worms in the waste

Under a microscope, the researchers saw that the samples contained the eggs of two of the world's most common and widespread intestinal parasites: whipworms ( Trichuris trichiura ), which cause the infection known as trichocephalus, and giant roundworms ( Ascaris lumbricoides ), the largest of the nematodes found in human intestines, with adults that can grow to more than 1 foot (30 centimeters) long.

People with a light load of these worms may experience no symptoms. But when whipworms and giantroundworms heavily colonize the digestive tract, they compete with their hosts for food, siphoning off the nutrients that would normally be absorbed in the intestines. Eggs of the parasites pass through the feces and spread to other hosts by ingestion (say, when a human doesn't wash their hands and spreads the parasite to food or other objects that get consumed). That means infections are most common in places with poor hygiene and sanitation as well as areas where human waste is used as fertilizer or where people defecate in the soil.

Mitchell has estimated that during a two- or three-year crusade expedition, noblemen and clergy were just as likely to die in battle as they were to succumb to malnutrition and disease. Presumably, the risk of malnutrition would have been even worse for poor foot soldiers with fewer resources. The new study suggests that parasites likely contributed to the demise of many soldiers who died of starvation or disease.

"In these circumstances is quite likely that medieval soldiers with a heavy parasite load would have been at increased risk of death from starvation during famine episodes such as long sieges or expeditions when supplies ran out," the researchers wrote. "This is because they would have had to share the limited available food with their parasites."

Studying feces is a rather unglamorous but useful way for archaeologists to reconstruct the diets, health and lifestyle of ancient people. The parasites described in this study are hardly the oldest ever found in Cyprus. A recent analysis of human waste up to 10,000 years old revealed roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms at the Neolithic Cypriot sites of Khirokitia and Shillourokambos.

The research was detailed in the International Journal of Paleopathology.

Q&A: John Densmore on Reconciling With the Doors

By Steve Appleford
Rolling Stone
For a full decade, the Doors were at war with one another, entangled in dueling lawsuits and memoirs and locked in disputes over the licensing of their music and use of the Doors name on the road. But when keyboardist Ray Manzarek was hospitalized this year with a rare form of cancer, communications between the old friends and collaborators finally began to thaw.

"The inner circle knew Ray had cancer for a while," drummer John Densmore tells Rolling Stone of his former bandmate, who died last month in Germany. "Then I heard he was really sick and called him. He said thank you for the prayers and told me chemo was fucked. So there was a closing, thank God."

500 Greatest Albums of All Time: The Doors, 'The Doors'

In a new book, The Doors Unhinged, Densmore writes of the unexpected break in the band's long partnership that continued even after Jim Morrison's death in 1971. The trouble began when Densmore refused to sign off on a lucrative deal to sell "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" to a 2002 Cadillac commercial and intensified when Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger began touring as the Doors of the 21st Century.

The book opens with a scene of Morrison enraged and hurt after the band licensed "Light My Fire" for a 1968 Buick commercial in his absence, and picks up decades later in a courtroom, with Densmore suing to stop use of the Doors name on tour. He was countersued for $40 million in damages for the drummer's refusal to accept the Cadillac deal and other offers. Densmore prevailed, and along the way he shares stories from the band's history, about getting moral support from Tom Waits and Eddie Vedder, and of finally meeting Morrison's parents.

The self-published book has Densmore on a new tour of indie record stores for signings, including a stop last week at Amoeba in Hollywood, which drew several hundred fans. Doors activity has never stopped, with last year's collaboration with Skrillex, "Breakin' a Sweat," and a comprehensive iPad app released in May; Densmore expects to join Krieger for a live tribute to Manzarek in Los Angeles.

For years, the Doors always seemed to be on the same page, then something went sour.
We were always on the same page musically.

You did a VH1 Storytellers special in 2001, the American Prayer album in 1978 and many other things together after Jim died.
The Doors are back on our hinges. Ray and Robby - I just think they made a mistake thinking the Doors without Jim, like the Police without Sting. That's straightened out. It was a really rough struggle.

What made you want to write a book on this very specific event in the Doors story?
When it was over, I was very pleased that Jim's estate and I persevered, but it was pretty rigorous. In the beginning, when I started the lawsuit, the hardcore fans thought I was ruining the band. I really wanted for anyone who was interested to see the journey I went through and what I was trying to do. And maybe it's metaphoric for other people's personal struggles with money. In there I say, "Money is like fertilizer: when it's hoarded, it stinks. When spread around, stuff grows."

You include a moment when the Doors had new managers who approached Jim with something like "You don't really need these guys. You're the star." What was Jim's reaction to that?
The managers said, "You're the money. Dump these guys." And at the next rehearsal, he says, "Let's dump them!" We were really equal. And that's why somehow, even for L.A. Woman, where Jim was clearly an alcoholic with a disease, when we were alone we were blessed by the muse. We don't own that.

The book opens with a pretty dark scene: Morrison is enraged about a deal the band made to sell "Light My Fire" to a Buick commercial.
I'm very proud of the first two words of the book: "Fuck you!"

You describe it not just as a blowup but an actual turning point, shaking trust within the band.
What blows my mind is that "Light My Fire" was primarily Robby's song - Jim threw in "love become a funeral pyre." Typical Morrison. If he flips out over "Come on, Buick, light my fire," what does that mean about his caring for the whole catalog, everything we represented? I'm not going to forget that.

Early on, the Doors decided to split and credit everything equally. Was that from conviction, or were you not yet educated about the standard ways of the music business?
That was Jim's suggestion before we ever had a record deal, before we had a gig. It was maybe na"ive, but he could have later changed it, and didn't. He was the lyricist and could have got half of everything.

What does that say about what mattered to him?
Community. Amazing. There's sacredness when people are committed together for something.

It was once the norm for bands to refuse to sell their music for commercials, but now that's flipped around.
If you're a new band trying to pay the rent, then what the hell, do what you've got to do. But if you get going and you've got a toehold on success, you might want to look at that again. Tom Waits wrote a letter in response to my article in the Nation that said, "You want to look at changing your lyrics into a jingle. Is that what you want to do? Then it's the sound of coins in your pocket." I love that guy.

It's a big question. And I have Pete Townshend say in Rolling Stone, "You fell in love to Shirley to my song? I don't give a fuck about Shirley, I'll do what I want." True.

The Doors aren't billionaires, but we have deep pockets. I know that Ray and Robby, like me, have a nice house and a couple of groovy cars, so I'm going to veto this stuff. If they were struggling, it might be different. I knew money was going to be a very volatile subject. I've already been called a socialist elitist weirdo from the right.

In the book, you seemed especially hurt by the break with Robby.
Well, we were best friends, and it really feels nice to connect again. I said to Robby a few weeks ago in an email: "Let's have our musical reunion for Ray. Let's play some Doors songs at the Whisky or Wiltern - there's a lot of great musicians in L.A. that we know and love and admire the band. I'd like to break the ice that way." It should happen pretty soon.

The three of you did appear on a Skrillex track last year.
That was fun. At first, I was like, drum machines? When drum machines were first invented, Ringo said, "I'm the drum machine!" We pride ourselves on the groove. But I was into electronic music in high school - Stockhausen, Stravinsky, Schoenberg. I met and he's a musician and plays guitar and piano. I needed to hear the stuff before I committed. It's got to feel right, and it did. In fact, I called him a month or two ago, and said, "I've got a beat that I think would fit with you . . ."

You were joined in your lawsuit by Morrison's parents.
I never thought that entering into this horrible train wreck would produce a blessing like meeting Jim's dad. Wow. Here's this guy who was on the other side of the fence during Vietnam. He was over there on a battleship, and we wrote "The Unknown Soldier" against it. He at 86 comes to support Jim's legacy? Whoa.

Did you discuss "The End" with his father by any chance?
I heard that he got nervous when he heard it.

Getting to know him, did it tell you something about Jim that you didn't know before?
Maybe there was a will, a strong sense of presence. Jim had that too. Jim had a will to get this rock concert he heard in his head before he even met us to come to fruition. Maybe there's something there.

The FBI has purposefully - and, it says, justifiably - shot 150 Americans since 1993

A by-the-numbers look at the bureau's apparently blameless firing at suspected criminals and other intentional targets

After the FBI shot and killed Ibragim Todashev in May, while agents were questioning him about his connection to alleged Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the bureau pledged to investigate the cloudy circumstances surrounding the death. "The FBI takes very seriously any shooting incidents involving our agents, and as such we have an effective, time-tested process for addressing them internally," an agency spokesman said .

If the FBI's post-shooting inquiries are time-tested, "their outcomes are also predictable," say Charlie Savage and Michael S. Schmidt in The New York Times . In every single intentional shooting by FBI agents since 1993, the bureau's internal investigations have ruled the shooting as justified, according to interviews and FBI documents The New York Times obtained through a Freedom of Information Act.

It turns out, with rare exception, the FBI launches an inquiry whenever an agent fires a shot in the field. "Critics say the fact that for at least two decades no agent has been disciplined for any instance of deliberately shooting someone raises questions about the credibility of the bureau's internal investigations," say Savage and Schmidt , but FBI defenders say that several factors explain the impressive record, including that FBI agents "tend to be older, more experienced, and better trained than city police officers."

Whatever the reason, here's a look at the FBI's record of shooting Americans between 1993 to 2011, by the numbers:

2,200
Pages of FBI records delivered to The New York Times

58
Incidents covered in those records where gunfire was exchanged

70
Suspects shot and killed by the FBI in that period

80
Suspects shot and wounded by the FBI in that period

100
Percentage of those shootings deemed justified after internal investigations

9
Law enforcement officials killed in the covered incidents

38
Law enforcement officials wounded in the covered incidents

289
Total deliberate FBI shootings covered in the documents, including those that wounded nobody

5
Incidents deemed "bad shoots," or weapons discharges that didn't comply with FBI policy. None of the "bad" shots hit anybody. (Agents are allowed to used deadly force if they fear their lives, or the lives of their colleagues, are in danger.)

$1.3 million
FBI payout to the victim of a 2002 FBI shooting, an innocent 20-year-old the FBI mistook for a bank robber. Even after settling with the victim, the FBI investigators classified the shooting as justifiable.
